Tundra front end popping noise when making full turns

A visual inspection is a good start. Check the boots for dry rot, check for grease slinging, check the clamp ends. Some play in the CV is expected, it has to rotate and angle with turning. Getting in the truck in 4wd on loose surface with the windows down or a friend to help and inspect the CV's during full lock turn left and right while rolling slowly. Listen for popping and binding, look for openings in the boot that may not have been obvious during static inspection. Should smoothly rotate. Shouldn't have a lumpy rotation or any sloppy movement.

 

I am taking off the CV axles at the moment. I already took the drivers side off and am in the process of the passenger side. This is driver side photos. I guess CV housings look bent and have grease on them as well as the inner wheel seal

 

Finished removing both axles and just slowly testing the vehicle. Pop sound is still present.

No CV’s. No skids. No sway bar. What’s left? Ball joints? Steering rack?

 

I pray it’s not the rack, it’s going to be a real PITA to replace. I’m guessing LCA bushings although there is no play, they might be bad.

 

My tie rods (non-Toyota replacements) started knocking when backing up mostly after about 2 months. I overlooked them for a while since they had recently been replaced. I ended up replacing them with Toyota ones and that fixed it.

edit: outer tie rods.

 

Could coilovers make that noise?

 

Mine did it for years at full lock. I had an 08 for 12 years. Pop only happened when backing up at full lock. Never affected my steering or anything it was just a pop at full lock in reverse. If you look there’s a plate the outer tie rod would hit. Pretty sure that’s the noise I was dealing with

 

Update:
Got new bushings for the lower control arms. Problem fixed. No more popping noise. I also torqued lower cam bolts to 207ft Lbs. Very happy camper.

I honestly didn't it was the bushings because the wheel didn't move at all while the truck was jacked up so I said What the Hell, let me try the bushings instead of the steering rack and it fixed it. Now I learned just because bushings look good doesn't mean they are all always good. I hope this thread helps a lot of people.

 

What brand did you go with? Did you have a hard time pressing the old bushings out / new ones in?
And I assume an alignment is needed after this?

 

I bought some bushings from Amazon since I wanted something delivered very fast. I took off both LCAs from my truck and I took them to a local suspension shop to do the work since I don't have the tool to remove and press in the bushings. Hope these bushings last a long time. And yes you do need an alignment after

Man... that's maddening. Bushings can drive you nuts... heard them squeak before, but wouldn't have guessed that pop came from them. Nice work on the fix dude.

 

Not trying to hijack your thread here, OP, just adding more potential solutions for folks who may have this issue down the road.

Mine was fixed by tightening up the LCA bolts. The rear cam bolt on each side was loose. Also had loose Coachbuilder tie rod end bolts, but I think the popping was from the LCA bolts.

 

mine pop as well, not a big deal but just kind of annoying. When torquing can bolts you always tighten the nut correct?
I put cheaper aftermarket LCA on about 4 months ago, and moog outer tie rods ends. I think it’s one of the two.
