1/22 build date is bad news.

I think Toyota don't know wtf is going on. If it's a bad batch, the issue would have resolved itself once a good batch gets cycled into production lines. They're also losing money if they are purposely sending bad trucks out.

At this point, they can't guarantee future trucks won't have the same issue. Therefore, no choice for them but to keep this quiet until they're certain the issue is identified, located, and fixed.

My main concern is we have a ticking time bomb in every truck that will generate a 7k service bill once warranty period is over.

Toyota deletes posts with questions about known problems from their social media accounts. Rather than answer questions inconvenient to their marketing malarkey, they delete them.

    Does that answer your question?

And people wondered why we wanted the trusty old 3UR-FE V8 to continue in 3rd gens?

How efficient is the new TT V6 sitting at the dealer waiting for repair?

Super fuel efficient. Doesn’t burn any gas at all when it’s broken!

The other questions I have is that when a truck goes in with this problem do they, or can they even, test the other good turbo somehow in the absence of a separate trouble code? And have we had any "repeat offenders" where a truck has to go back again for an issue with the other turbo or to replace the first replacement?

0 mpg is pretty bad efficiency if we spin it just right!

I noticed that Toyota officially states "turbocharger sub assembly is not a serviceable part"
This means that despite being 2 main, separate components, it is assembled in such a way that the entire assembly needs to be replaced.
Basically, if the actuator is a $400 part, and it fails, you get to pay thousands to remove a good turbocharger.
Not trying to bash the truck, but it's something to keep in mind for those who intend to own past warranty.

I don't understand why the part costs so much. Raptor turbos and F150 turbos are <$600 including the electric actuator. Even a full blown Borg Warner EFR or Garrett G series turbos with their most advance compressor tech, light weight turbine materials, ceramic ball bearings, etc don't cost >$2000.

Toyota sounds like BMW with their parts pricing.

Many many years ago I installed an alarm and remote start system in my Tacoma. As part of that process I removed the driver's seat and had to disconnect the seat airbag connector. I did something wrong and the connector body came apart and I managed to lose this tiny special spring. I went to Toyota and asked for the spring or at least the connector. But, LOL, it was only available as a unit with *the entire vehicle wiring harness*. I was able to measure the other spring and source one from a 3rd party.

Probably for now they want to collect all the turbo parts. The wastegate actuator has a part number on it, probably can buy it in the future. I’m also sure there will be companies in the future that do rebuilds. When I had a WRX, I sent a turbo in to a company to have it rebuilt after the turbine housing cracked near the wastegate. Didn’t cost too much.

That makes sense. They really need to do a thorough post-mortem on this now as part of the TSB to nail down the cause so need the entire assembly. But I wonder if the Toyota parts catalog lists these parts separately and they would be available in the future for routine failures?

Yeah, that’s true. Sometimes you can order a part if you have the part number but dealers may not make the actuator part available.

So what you are saying is I can source an electric actuator for my Tundra turbo at the local Ace Hardware?

Ford uses a ton of Chinese made parts on their vehicles. In the turbo aftermarket, Chinese turbos are a fraction of the cost of name brand turbos.

I'm not saying that is the case with Ford, but it's a possibility.

Would love to know more about what the TAS and MIL in the recommendations mean along the last note about not replacing without direction from TAS.

We do wonder as that would not have made sense, at least not for US Market with latest CAFE standards. You want to complain about that call your congressperson, stop putting that on Toyota.

False equivalence is a logical fallacy in which an equivalence is drawn between two subjects based on flawed or false reasoning i.e. comparing an apple to an orange.

I think they charge 4.7k for just the turbo. Some engines cost less than that.
