I want to top off my brand new leaking rear differential. The manual says to use Toyota genuine differential gear oil LT 75W-85 GL or equivalent. Is it safe to say any 75W-85 will be good to go? I assume Toyota would be using synthetic..

it appears the oil is a couple inches below full as of now. Still trying to pinpoint the leak.. but it’s being sprayed all over the bottom of the truck. Or flung from the drive shaft.. pulled that air vent and it’s functioning fine.

I need to make a 250 mile drive tomorrow and I’m testing to see how much it’s leaking now. If I can bring it in after this drive that would be great. Is don’t plan on fixing anything myself. I just don’t want to run low on fluid. And I don’t mind having some for the next change anyway.

it wont solve anything, it looks like that leak is coming from the main diff seal, it will keep leaking.

How would they know what he used? And how does he get it to the dealer if the diff is empty. Just bring it and when the diff eats itself cause there is no fluid he just parks it on the side of the road and waits for a tow?

Correct, its fine if its LS fluid. Like M1 diff fluid comes with it by default.

I would just top it off if its really leaking that bad. They are gunna have to drain and fill it I believe to swap the seal anyways I believe.

I’ll see about buying some from the dealer when I pick it back up. Nowhere around here has the correct diff fluid anyway.

I was referring to driving it while leaking badly and it grenades and your stuck fucking around on the side of the road and do who knows what damage to other things.

I was not talking about adding whatever fluids.

ya man, when I saw how bad yours was leaking and you had to drive 250 miles, I was thinking fuck, this dudes will be on teh side of the road with metal shavings all over the place, lol.

I hope you get it fixed, I wonder what the deal is, sloppy build at the factory? or more defective parts

Sure you can top it off with that stuff. But no way I'd drive it 250 miles leaking like that. First trip should be to the dealer. Get a loaner or rental for your trip.

Ya but to be fair that was the oil that had built up after leaking for probably at least a weak. After cleaning it up and taking it for a test drive it was clear I would be empty by the time I got back lol. I’m guessing a defective part but idk yet. The guy who designed the limited tundras is flying up to look at it along with a couple other trucks all with cosmetic issues.
