If it doesn’t run lean and doesn’t set a fault code, you are fine.

OK I got this from Scanguage for MAF readout.

however - I don't know what unit it is reporting - I was hoping for volts. but it ain't volts.

    idle is ~8.3
    Cruise @ 60 = ~33
    1/2 throttle = ~140

roads are wet here...had to stop there..

when engine is going downhill & gas shuts off, it reads low 8's.

so we know it's reading something other than fuel.

are those numbers a measure of volume? GPH or GPM

I have a follow up question with Scanguage asking for the units it's reporting.

I would dance a jig if it could read out volts.

Not familiar with Scangauge, but looks like it is g/s (grams per second).

Agreed grams/second appears to be the units. If you refer to the Harrop technical guide you may recall that max g/s measured on the 85mm was 450g/s which is why they chose that pulley for their tuneless option. It also stated that at the higher boost levels the limit they discovered was 512 g/s as well as the voltage ceiling.

yup. I think your right - i was just reading that.

I will wait for dry pavement...and see if I can reach 500.

I can dig it if it really is grams per second, as I know 512 is my top.

now - I have something to occupy my mind...

I was digging into some old posts regarding the MAF on some Facebook pages. I found posts with Shrek talking about maxing out the MAF. Sounds to me based on this that it running lean “off the map” is unlikely. It will go super rich if anything as a protective strategy. If it runs good when I’m done tuning I’ll probably just abandon the idea of getting a bigger intake. I think I’m just over analyzing at this point. Like Viktor said, not lean and no codes your fine.

My tuner had to re-scale my maf due to maxing the airflow. Since then I tripped PO103 once at the top of 3rd gear. I just reset the code and went on. Probably a result of the outside temp being really cold(25) and doing Dragy runs. It should only pop the code if the airflow is exceeded for more than 3 seconds, if I remember correctly. Unlikely to happen again.

I was pondering the idea of a more torque oriented tune versus a horsepower oriented tune. That's as far as I got. Thoughts?

    That’s me

or at least that’s how my tune worked out

I’m not sure one could specifically tune tq. I think it’s more of a function of the motor

On the matter of the engine design, I understand that bore and stroke influence if an engine is more torque producing or more horsepower inclined. But what I was thinking about was how in some of the dyno sheets posted, folks have pointed out in them that some of the dips/spikes could be tuned for a more smooth output. That got me to wonder if torque could be manipulated via tuning in a similar fashion, particularly with the ability to manipulate the VVT. Tuning for one characteristic versus another would naturally have compromises just like tunning the same engine for MPG versus drag racing. My mind was wondering about drag racing versus towing.

My job provides too great of an opportunity for my mind to ponder random things...

ah...my tune did that....but, that was D3 fixing the stock tune and putting back what Toyota took out. timing & fuel crap.

If you find a TQ tune, let me know. I would be interested.

jacking with the VVT intrigues me. Didn't @ViktorG mention finagling with that?

He could have. I'll be getting his opinion on the matter when he and I discuss tuning my truck some time later this month. I gotta bump my pump first.

Engines produce torque and dynos measure torque.
Horsepower is a number calculated from torque and rotational speed.
Hp=Torque*RPM/Constant (In the imperial measuring system, the constant is 5252).

I was looking at my WOT logs, despite hitting the 5 volts on the MAF the measured airflow shown in lbs/min is 64.1 max which I think translates to around 485 g/s. I wonder if this means I’m not really at the measurable max of the MAF despite the voltage or if my truck just has a lower max compared to the truck Harrop tested.

So...if a horse develops one horsepower, one could plug that figure into the referenced formula and calculate the torque that that horse develops...buuut if there's no rotational speed, is torque actually developed by the horse?

I got my '16 pro back with the Harrop stage 1 and 2, however DAP had to keep the 85mm pulley. Tuned it all night but with the 80mm something kept either throwing error codes or shutting the engine down. It was a lot to consume for a non-wrencher brain. I'll pull the dyno sheet out but I know the baseline was 300whp and I'm pretty certain after the install and tune it was 470whp. As others have said re: dynos they're all different. He said his typically measures 10 to 15% lower than another in the area. If his is lower than the norm that would jive with the 500+whp we've seen others obtain. He also said that with every truck being different they usually baseline on is dynoe at around 270whp and he doesn't see many at a higher base than mine.

For the 80mm pulley it would take a new fuel system but he felt that going much beyond my whp pushes into territory where I'd need to worry about issues without upgrading other components.

I'll pull the sheets out of the box to confirm #'s. It was also 20 degrees at the time so I assume that made bigger #'s than a normal TX winter day. Otherwise I'm all stock other than 275/70R18 tires which are minimal from stock tires.

Question #1 If multiple tunes were avail, would most folks flip around to different tunes?

I ask because with the tune I have, and I don't have a gadget to flip tunes, is meeting all my needs.

it's a pussy cat if I drive easy.

    It's a beast when I push it.

Question #2 can one tune the way the trans behaves? like towing or drag racing? I realize a decent trans pkg if preferable. just asking.

I'm guessing you had the 650 injectors as well?

your number look like mine. I started with 287 (ambient was 95 degrees outside)

was the 470hp with the 85mm? I ask because that's where i ended up with the 80mm.

470whp is pretty impressive on DAPS dyno from what I’ve seen, so that’s cool you were able to hit that on the 85mm pulley. Remote tuning mine on the 80mm we haven’t hit any snags that I’m aware of yet. I am curious what issues he was having with yours. He told me before that the 80mm wouldn’t exceed the stock fuel rails capabilities, so I wonder what part of your fuel system he thinks is the culprit. And I agree on the low temps helping out the numbers. Was this yesterday that yours was on the dyno? Can’t wait to see your dyno sheet.

470 w/the 85mm. I'll dig the sheet out today to confirm but i'm 99% sure my memory is accurate. Should be the 650 injectors as well but I'll need to look at the parts that were removed and brought home in the crate.

It was a couple of weeks ago when we dropped down into the teens/20s at night. I forget which was baseline vs post SC but one was 16 degrees and the other was 20. Couldn't get a torque reading because the dyno wasn't playing nice in the weather.

    Running 93octane.

    Very nice.

start saving for new rear tires!

my tuner spent 2 days tuning when the injectors went on.
I wish I knew what they had to do - so I could pass it on to you...but...I'm not one of those tuner wizards.

Here's the Dyno corrected - 478. Uncorrected was 494. This is with the upgraded fuel injectors.

    Am I reading this right?

What injectors is everyone upgrading to?
I was speaking to a local tuner and he advised against the DW as he is constantly getting erratic results tuning engines with them.

Whatever this forum told me to do
I'm DW - Of the limited knowledge I have on the tuning issues:

    stage 1 tuned "easy".

then, D3 added the 80mm & the DW 650's....then it took 2 days to get it right.

but, from what I can tell, I'm consistent.

I will now leave the factual reservation & give my usually incorrect thoughts:

Some of the jargon used when I picked up the truck was that my tune was based on the Mag + Fitkit - which had no tuning specs for the 650's.

so they had to "rebuild" it.

I don't know what that means, but is flanges with your original inquiry.

or....you are dead on & D3 just had to spend the time to iron out the erratic-ness.

I have the DWs as well. I purchased them through DAP and that’s what he chooses to sell and tune with, so how bad can they be. I remember him saying not to get the Five-0 injectors. That said I’m pretty much dialed in on my remote tune now. Once the weather clears I’ll have to give it the beans.
