This is interesting. I have a 17 TRD PRO (with only 1 fake hood scoop:rofl:) but it is built like a tank. But I've always felt that much of TMC interior bits and parts were crappy. I live with it because of the reliability.

I saw my very first one on the road yesterday, white with black trim. I thought it looked great! I was surprised, because it never impressed me in photos and videos.

I don't care about styling very much though, and none of the changes made are things I'd want, except for the boxed frame.

FAKE HOOD SCOOP = Yes, we all agree it's shameful but rather common for manufacturers to add fake chunks of plastic to vehicles to look cool.
2022 TUNDRA = Fake engine noise pumped through speakers to mimic V8 sound, embarrassing.

Back in the saddle . . . just picked up a '21 1794 Mesquite today . . . not my first Tundra and feel very fortunate to get one last go around with that V8 and cabin space.

Fake engine noise is pretty lame. Just make the damn thing quiet, V6’s sound thrashy and industrial otherwise.

If you’re gonna pipe in fake engine noise then at least have it sound like an F18. If its all pretend then make it count

    This^^^

I took one look at the 3rd gen and all the bad vibes from my 2020 AT4 washed over me. I can't express my happiness since making the trade. The GMC was so bad at everything, makes the 2.5 gen Tundra feel like heaven. The 10 speed and rear end in the GMC made for a very bad driving experience, something I fear with the new Tundra.
    20210819_125424.jpg

That said, the new Sequoia looks nice. If they prove to be reliable after a half decade or so, I might trade my Tundra for one.

Yeah I’ll keep my ‘20 awhile. I actually love the appearance, but the smaller interior is my #1 turnoff, then the plastic bed, turbo problems, v6 sound, all negatives for me. I was hoping for bigger, badder, and instead they downsized.

Chevrolet, king of the fake hood scoop since 1963!

I’ll wager Zora was pissed the bean counters didn’t allow him to make it a ram air intake, and it probably pissed him off to his last day above ground.

Pretty sure he was fine in his final days designing one of the most popular and iconic GM cars of all time, fake scoop or not. o_O

That is a stinger hood scoop originally equipped on 1967 big block corvettes. It fits all corvettes back to 63 if you wanted to replace the stock one, which was considered blasphemy in the Corvette world up until the the resto-mod craze took hold. Mine is a heavily modified 1964 with a 365 hp ZZ-4, Richmond 6 speed, Hooker super comp headers with Flow Master exhaust and Vette Brakes disks on all 4 corners. Oh, and a 67 big block hood.

V8 or nothing. I'm glad I bought my 2021 and will keep it as long as I can. Toyota should have put a 10 speed transmission or something and kept the V8 to up the gas mileage for the CAFE standards.

To tie this back into the Tundra world, my 21 SR-5 that I paid money down on in October, and still don’t have because of the “stop sale” power steering issue, does not have the fake scoop, but I do like the look.

This thread has taught me that people have extremely strong opinions regarding the looks of what are supposed to be utilitarian vehicles. :monocle:

I think the fake hood scoop is the most ridiculous looking part of any generation Tundra, and I still would have bought a '21 Tundra even if they all came with one.

I hope someone drops one of these new 10-speeds in a 5.7L Tundra. I'd love to see it.

    This exactly.

Toyota could have found a way to meet these CAFE standards and still kept the V8 and the size of the truck should have stayed the same or bigger.

CAFE standards might have been possible to meet. Emissions standards for NOx however will be nearly insurmountable in the near future for most V8’s, and Toyota doesn’t design vehicles with a plethora of engine options in mind for the product life cycle.

All the domestic V8’s including the Ford 5.0L have some form of cylinder deactivation, and Toyota would have done the same.

Cylinder deactivation is proven to kill entire engines much more readily than a bad turbocharger here and there.

Why couldn't Toyota have made a 3/4 ton option and kept the V8 or made a bigger V8?

Because they don’t care about that market segment.

The only reason the Tundra is still a thing is that it can use the TNGA-F architecture that underpins a bunch of other products sold all over the world. If you think Toyota is going to invest in a single market HD pickup to sell under 100K units per year you are smoking too much crack.

This is true. Toyota cares more about how many models they can derive from a certain chassis. They also listen to the majority demographic - people who care about fuel economy and people who want to sit higher when they're driving. This is why they push the crossovers like the rav4 and highlander (we all know that they're functionally pieces of crap overall), and the prius more than anything. Toyota doesn't care that we don't care about sedans with lift kits.

The RAV4 and Highlander aren’t pieces of crap, they’re very good station wagons.

People want station wagons, they just don’t want to admit it. Plus sedans and wagons have become so low slung and “sporty” that majority of consumers don’t want them.
