No problem. Just let it cool down and pull the plug and put the washer on it. You shouldn’t lose any fluid.

Is there a consensus regarding the thermostat pin? Should it be removed once the install is complete? I watched a YouTube video where the guy lived in a warm weather climate and opted to keep it pinned.

Take it out and let the stat work as designed. A warm climate doesn’t make a difference since the stay opens once it reaches operating temp (which it will do once you drive for a while).

Has anyone installed an inline transmission filter on their setup yet?

Is there a reason for wanting one? It's a closed system and has a factory filter in it that doesn't seem to ever go bad.

I saw this YouTube video and they recommended it as one of the possible steps you could take to extend the life of your transmission. I’m not sure if our Tundras necessarily need one or not, but that’s why I posed the question.

I got my kit installed last weekend! It appears to be functioning flawlessly so far. I haven't really had an opportunity to punish it on a steep grade or anything, but the ATF pan temp hasn't gone over 190 degrees. I'm a commercial electrician by trade, but far from an auto mechanic, by any means. The install wasn't terrible, if you have all the tools and take your time, it shouldn't be too difficult.

I finally installed the MHX kit last week and had a chance to monitor the temps for about 100 miles on the freeway and some hills. My pan temp at its worst was about 199 degrees for about 10 minutes and the torque converter hit maybe 230 for a couple minutes before going back down to about 200. I was fully loaded in the cab and in the bed and going about 80mph. Before I would sit at around 230 at the pan and the TC would a little hotter without any passengers or load. Overall very happy and the install wasn't bad. Hardest part for me was leveling the truck.

I'll prolly monitor the temps a couple more times and see what it looks like offroading before I stop monitoring it.

I see you’re missing a washer between the M8 top mount bolt head and bracket. Was this missing from your kit?

I doubt it, I probably just missed it. LOL
I have the Magnuson SC, and that lower mount really kicked my butt.
It is damn near impossible to get the provided bolt/nut combo tight without a second set of hands. :(
I would imagine that it would have been no problem if it were possible to use two carriage bolts down there.

Oh, okay! Lol. I bet it’s not fun trying to squeeze a wrench between the intercooler and nut back there.

That is an option however this would require you to drill holes in the engine bay to mount it. Susa makes filters like the one you posted but the one I would recommend would be Susa's in line pre filter (6AN) part number 11-IF0606-D which would be very easy to install without worrying about mangling your truck. The service kits for this filter is part number 11-SKIF612.

This filters details can be found here: http://www.setrabusa.com/products/filters/inline/index.html

I haven't installed my kit yet. Things just got in the way, too much going on. Retired from the military after 20.5 years, bought a house and moved but am ready to put my MHX kit on now. Where does the horn mount so it won't interfere with the AJT relocation bracket? I decided to go with the older style Pro grille for my 2021 and bought the updated AJT bracket. It appears AJT redesigned the bracket.

Thank you for your service. With the AJT bracket you will need to mount the horn a little higher much like how the Sequoia has to mount it. See the attached photo for reference.

Before I installed a set of Valhalla Shields cat protection plates last month, I thought I would double check the ATF level. It took about 4 fl oz more fluid before it started trickling at 100F. But after I checked it and installed the plates, I realized that I didn't pin the thermostat. I wasn't sure if it's necessary to have the thermostat pinned when checking the fluid. Today when I installed a new Valhalla front skid plate, I pulled the front cat shield off and redid the measurement with the thermostat pinned. I added one quart of ATF to the fill hole, and after I set the fluid level, there was 31 fluid ounces in the drain pan. Apparently it is not necessary to have the thermostat pinned, but I guess I would go by the book and pin it...

When checking the level you always want to pin the thermostat, especially during the initial install of the cooler. When you shut off the engine after a long drive, ATF from the cooler will feed to the pan due to gravity until the ATF decreases below 180-185 degrees. This will raise your pan level slightly and you won’t have an accurate level check.

Install complete, put the pics over in the "what have you done to your 2.5..." thread. Note: starting with a 41 degree pan temp means its gonna take a while to get the pan up to temp, but once it's there you have all day to check the drain from the overflow. Will give it a test on Tuesday and post the OBD screen grabs for before/after temps.

    UPDATE;
On my 21 CM TRD my winter temps were 200-215 empty running around town without pulling anything. Installed the Seatrab myself as I plan to keep truck as long as possible. Just returned from 4,000 mile trip to Arizona pulling UTV (4,000 lbs) through some decent elevations like Albuquerque and Flagstaff with AC on and temps never got out of 190’s. Seems like a good investment of time and money when results were as positive as I experienced.

As close as I can get to a true before/after installation comparison. These were both taken at the top of the steepest section of my climb up to hunting camp. It’s a 7-8 mile climb on a dirt road with plenty of switchbacks that starts at 1400’ and tops out at 4900’. The steepest section is a little over a mile and 200’-300’ vertical below the top.

Before: air temp in low 40s, road is wet, so I wasn’t pushing very hard up the hill, traction was fine I was just tired of the sound of all the gravel being thrown onto my nerf bars by the Michelin LTX AT2s. Not towing, just me and basic gear for a few days at camp.

After: air temp in low 50s, so about ten degrees warmer, road is dry and I’m pushing up the hill at a much faster pace since the AT2s aren’t throwing wet gravel everywhere. Additional 150-200 pounds worth of gear and dog in the truck versus first run.

End result is about a 30 degree lower temp for both Transmission Pan and Torque Converter. Also of note was that the T/C temp cooled much more quickly when I was off the gas than without the cooler.

Finally got my kit installed. Awesome-better-than-factory transmission cooler!

I ended up with about one quart (maybe slightly less) of ATF added to the pan after level check. Is that right?

I might have been sloppy and used/wasted more fluid than you did but I used a portion of the second quart that came in the kit. Looks like you did a great job! I’m confident you’ll enjoy the cooler as the lower temperatures are certainly a good thing.

Hey everyone, I have a customer who returned a MHX-514 kit that was never installed nor is damaged. If someone is interested, I am offering this kit for $950 plus shipping and you will bear the month long wait for a Setrab kit. Please let me know if you’re interested.

In the process of getting a quote from a dealer to install.

I was reading over the install instructions. Are the access ports for the hoses to be able to plumb into the tranny fluid, are those plugged holes that were used in previous year models? Or ?

    Yes/no
They are in a new "Block"(thermostat housing) that is on the side of the transmission that you will install. The one currently on your truck is just blocked off(via the casting).

Tony, the thermostat has the ports to connect the inlet and outlet hoses to. If you purchased a kit from me this will be included. If you are having a dealer do it, they will have all the parts needed to complete the install that’s included with the kit.
