I have spent most of the last 3 hours searching for information on changing the oil. I'm sure i previously have seen in depth threads but can not locate them. I found some utube information that looks pretty good but I don't trust it completely. Now that the Toyota care is history I want to do this and do it right and not have a mess. I would appreciate any solid information and solutions with links and part numbers for the upgrades and tools.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm about ready to do this...How many quarts of oil does the 5.7 take?

If you buy a yota genuine filter (I do, hear they are truly better than aftermarket) they come with a plastic cartridge drain. It's cheap but will get the job done.

So, all of the after market filters are substandard?

According to a video of multiple filters that were cut open brand new yes. OEM has more surface area for filtering. Look up oil filter comparison videos on YouTube.

I have used the TRD oil filters for the past 3 oil changes and they look really sturdy. Fairly inexpensive from Amazon and I have them in 2 days with prime.

For the 1st oil change before installing the no-mess drain plug, make sure you have a tall enough drain bucket. With 37's and a small lift my oil pan is pretty far up there, and my 1st go round I used a regular oil drain pan and the oil came shooting out and made a mess off the garage floor and tire/wheel etc. Use a 5 gal bucket if you can get it under there. Good luck with all............

I'm trading a water tank for this oil change to a guy who has a mobile service and has been doing work on my wife's Taco for years. He's a good guy but I'm not sure he knows this truck or will have the right stuff. I'm going to be ready to take over if need be. If he's all good, I save my stuff for next time.

This piece connects after taking oil filter cap off you screw this on and has a valve you turn or twist it drains oil from filter to drain pan no mess also if you order the fumoto valve be sure to get hose as well to connect hose to valve to drain pan no mess

I got my fumoto valve and my filter hose attachment not too long ago. this coming weekend will be oil change time and I've never been so excited to change oil before in my life. I gotta get a hose for my fumoto though, anyone know off the top of their head the diameter I need?

Reviving an old thread. I want to buy the fumoto valve. Just concerned with the depth of the threads going into the oil pan. I don’t like leaving any oil in the pan. Concerned that there will be a small amount of oil left if the threads are too long. I have been known to dump a little fresh oil in at each oil change with the drain plug removed. I always picture sludge buildup in the bottom of the pan. Anyone have any input on this?

It seems that on almost every car I’ve changed the oil on, the drain plug is situated so that small amount of oil is left behind. I don’t know why they can’t just put it at the lowest location.

There was a lengthy discussion on this over at TacomaWorld a few years back. Some guys started notching their fumoto to get a full(er) drain. Post 44 at this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/engine-oil-drain-valve-fumoto.319232/page-3

Personally, I’m in the “anything left will be so diluted by the 7+ quarts that it won’t be an issue” camp.

Sounds reasonable. I do lift up the driver side with the jack little bit to get a few more ounces out. I wish I could take the pan off every time and wipe it out!
