    I don't know how much help it would be using the specifics in an attempt to DIY take the punch mark test. I believe my servicing dealer took photos of a mirror aimed at the area and then submitted those photos to the Mother Ship for decoding. I would have loved to find out for myself but what would be the use? All things considered it made more sense to take it to the pros and have it done correctly.

    To answer your what would be the use question, one would either have more peace of mind, or not and then might try to keep driving more limited, avoid heavy loads, etc. I know I wouldn't tow if I knew that my truck is affected. Just my .02.

    Here’s the deal.

    If your rack is stamped with a specific stamp, you’re rack will get replaced.
    If it fails before you get it replaced, they will replace the entire P/S system (due to possible contamination.

    If your rack does not have the stamp of the affected racks, you are on your way and all is good.

    There is no need to ‘reinspect’ etc.

    There is a punch mark in one of the 'pie pieces' and depending on where the punch mark is determines whether the rack is affected or not. I’m not sure where this is located on the rack exactly but I’m assuming on the top since you need a mirror and light. I’m also assuming the red B is the area that fails inspection but not 100% positive.

    I guess I enjoy watching people hunt for answers, but I’d just get it inspected and be done. Why worry about what you can’t control anyway. If you’re rack isn’t affected you don’t want it replaced. It’s a big job and most people don’t want that kind of stuff done unless it has to be.

    You are mostly correct, an average joe owner might not be very good at diagnosing and that could have bad consequences. Especially since it is easy to misjudge a mirror image. So, for that reason I must agree!

    ummm…. It’s already happened. Toyota had been aware of this issue since November and and all we as effected owners had for 2 months was……. We Toyota know we have a issue with the rack but no fix yet we will let you know when a fix is available.I wasn’t told not to drive my truck, Toyota did not offer me a rental. I’ve been driving a potential ticking time bomb since October.

    Toyota put a stop sale on the trucks but did NOTHING to stop, warn or prevent the owners of the trucks that were already sold from driving.

    Pretty pissed off and disappointed with Toyota's handling of this.Pretty much feel like it was move the iron and then to hell with the customer.

    Would be nice of them (or someone in the know) to publish a picture of "the dots" so we'd have an idea of what the "secret code" is for a bad rack vs a safe rack.

    Like I said earlier I got a truck basically sitting used only for short trips as I don't want to be broke down arguing with Toyota about picking up my unsteerable truck far from home and trying to find a ride home
    in the middle of the night back in the woods and in zero temps.

    I mostly agree, IMO it should have never happened. Maybe a small percentage due to the human factor, but 25%????? WTF?? Even worse, of all components, the steering rack!! :annoyed:

    I'm almost certain if B is stamped you're NOT good but still think a quick inspection at the dealer is the easiest way. Plus, we are supporting the members here that do this work as a vocation.

    EDIT: Turns out B is the bad mark.

    All cleared. Took about an hour and a half for a 15min inspection but that’s ok because my vehicle is not affected. Good Luck to all as I really hope you get the same result…
