Wow! Things like this make me a bit frightened to do my first oil change on my Tundra. There's no telling what I'll find ;) I did order the factory aluminum cap, just in case.

The first time I changed the oil myself on my RAV-4 I used a 1/2" breaker bar and had to brace myself with my foot against the wheel to keep from sliding across the floor. I was just short of going for the cheater bar when it broke loose, and when it did it popped like something had literally broken.

Its not a bad design, just depends on how tight the previous person tightens the filter cap. I suggest a good tool also, those cheap Pennzoil tools from the parts store are just not refined enough to crank on it if you need to loosen a very tight one.

I went from plastic to aluminum and back to plastic. There were things I did not care for on the aluminum.
I’m confident in the plastic as long as the 18/9 torque values are followed.

Very true. I have the Motiv X which works very good on the housing.

How ironic that I just did this the other day lol. I got it because I took off the skid plate and just left it off after an oil change. I've ran it down gravel roads like that decently fast for a long time and nothing has happened to the plastic one, but better to get a metal one now than never, especially since I don't use a skid plate.

I have read threads about these and people were swearing that going to the metal one would cause galling and screw up the mount and that's why Toyota used plastic, but they aren't put on that tight so I dunno. They obviously put the metal ones on other vehicles and those I'm sure are fine.

I've put the metal Toyota Genuine housing on both my 14 Tundra and 18 Sienna. Haven't had an issue yet. I'll continue swapping out plastic housings for metal housings on any and all Toyota or Lexus vehicles I own. The one my Tundra has seen over 100k miles so far. Our Sienna is new to us and still on it's first oil change since we've purchased it.

I need this tool, my current one gets stick on filter housing and I don't go crazy when I tighten it up. It's a huge pain.

Threads are very coarse, going to be difficult to cross thread this cap onto the housing. Plus once it seats, one more small tug and its gone as far as it can.

Someone here a while back found in a Tundra service manual or something where Toyota said they used a plastic cap to save weight. o_O

    ETA: Found it.

Yup. As I've made mention before: C.A.F.E. It will show up in the smallest of places as the penalty for federal benevolent imperial guvmunt non-compliance is a sliding scale.

On two occasions the plug would not spin free without the entire canister coming loose. That leads to a huge mess. Torque specs were always followed. I’ve never had that issue with stock plastic.
Plus, the metal housing seems to bottom out before hitting 18 Ft Lbs. It probably is just fine but I didn’t like the feeling of it seating to the housing.
I’m sure the metal is just fine but so is the plastic if specs are followed.

Wow, very nice. Something about it makes me nervous not using OEM for this particular part. BTW for those following, I ordered mine a few days ago and delivery via Amazon Prime is about 2-2.5 weeks.

Note, that comes with the shorter filter tube. You have to take the longer one out of your current filter housing and install into the new metal housing.

You have to build/manufacturer in the state that you sell in. EVERY state. That way their claim via the interstate commerce clause of the Big List Of Rules doesn't apply. Mmmmmm. Tough row to hoe.

So, again, if you can find a Jowett Performance oil filter canister cap GET IT. New. Used. Garage sale. Craigslist. ANY WAY you can. Sooo schweeeeeeeet.

Just got my set today. I ordered the plug with hose to drain the filter too as I don't like those plastic clip ones to drain the filter. I took already the short stubby out to not forget to switch it with the one that is on the filter housing now. One thought was that the plastic one might crack if a knucklehead mechanic puts too much force on it to open. Not that I get the oil change done by one.IMG_0380.jpg

    Interesting, thanks for the response.

I haven't installed my metal cap yet, but I'll be on the lookout for those issues.

I’m not sure why the plug wouldn’t come free without the housing spinning. I torque to 18 housing 9 plug. I finished cleaning all the oil on the last one and said screw it, and went back to plastic.
Hopefully you never have this issue.

Here is my tool, it has the loose hex pattern as well as notches for the raised fins on the housing. It's not as nice as some of those aluminum ones, but it shouldnt have problem with 20ft lbs.
