Anyone have or planning on getting a retractable tonneau for the crew max 5.5” bed?

I think he is just pulling your leg there (check the yes emoji right after) :)

when you say retractable I am assuming you mean like the “roll n lock” ones we have seen on the 2nd gens?

…otherwise a lot of folks on here are trying to get the tru-fold hard/soft tonneau, diamondback (not necessarily retractable) and such.

I’m here in FL. I’m between a tri fold or retractable. I like the look and functionality of the retractable, but I figure the tri fold from the dealer fits perfect

I had really good luck with the tonnopro trifold. I’m waiting for them to update one for the 2022. Probably try the hard fold this time. They thought it would be available in a couple months. I don’t like the ones that sit low profile as they take up bed space. And the tri fold opens and is ready to go so quickly. And completely waterproof.

I am planning to get the RetraxPro XR cover. I had emailed them, and was told they expect availability of covers for the new Tundra at the end of February.

Thanks for sharing. Look pretty sweet as. Do you know if they have a canoe rack that works with that retractable cover? I see an image showing something like that on their website but don't see the product details.

Found this combo that should suit our needs though.

I have a Pace Edwards retract on my Tacoma and love it. No problems in cold weather except if and when it is literally covered with ice. That doesn't happen that often here and it has never happened when I needed to open it. The folding type would have the same problem. You would just need to scrape the snow and ice off. Internally there is no issue with ice as any liquid that enters the mechanism exits via the drain tubes. I am 90% going to go with another retract if and when I get a Tundra.

UptopOverland has a one. These come as mid height or full height. You will need the full height for a canoe.

I am going to look at those, too when the time comes. I believe that is one that does take the above bed racks for kayaks, bikes, or whatever. I need to see how they work, first, and how hard it might be to pop the racks off when you need that space above for carrying bigger stuff in the bed.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned diamondback yet. They will have their HD and SE versions available in a couple weeks.

Just a couple of other points to make after owning a cover... some retracts like mine have key locks and an external latch, so you can open the cover without opening the tailgate. Most others seem to have no key lock but the latch is concealed underneath so you have to drop the tailgate to get to it. There are obvious pros and cons to both types. And one uncommon issue to be considered is what happens if your electric tailgate lock fails in the locked position. If your cover needs the tailgate down to gain access to the latch you'd have to do surgery to get at that tailgate inside panel to fix the lock. Not likely with the factory electric tailgate lock but just something to consider.

I'm new to pickups, and have it on order, but need ladder rack + cover like in your pic.
This combo looks pretty nice, does any cover work with ladder rack, or did you have to modify it to make it work ?

What I investigated the narrow BAK Revolver X4s Hard Tonneau Cover will work with TracRac SR Sliding Truck Rack.
Another approach is Adarac ladder rack, but it's not removable and load capacity is not like with TracRac SR Sliding Truck Rack.
That is the good explanation https://www.etrailer.com/question-556093.html

That looks like a nice setup and those Revolvers are interesting. Only thing I don't like is that they don't seem to have a way to be secured in an intermediate position. That is one thing I really like about the retracts. For instance I can open mine about a foot or so and carry tall gas cans for the mowers without having to leave the rest of the contents uncovered and exposed to the wind.

And to answer an earlier question, no, those add on high racks are not compatible with all covers. For instance, they do not work with my Pace Edwards Jackrabbit tonneau. The Retrax brand (and maybe some others?) has some models that come with specific side rails that do accept those racks.

Just FYI, here is a photo of my Tacoma with the Pace Edwards cover. I also installed an aftermarket electric tailgate lock so this makes for pretty secure storage. Tundra seems to come with electric tailgate lock, at least in all the trims I might consider.

Anyone have a recommendation on a good retractable tonneau for a 5.5’ bed around $1k? Or know of a company making one soon for the 2022’s

One may exist, Truck2Go. I can't vouch for it though as to whether it's "good" or not. Double your budget to $2k and then you can shop for sure.

I'm a multi-time Roll 'n Lock owner and have never had any issues with them. Retrax also makes one that I've read here is highly rated.
