That was true for older vehicles. But modern vehicles the electronics and computers are far more sensitive to input voltage and shut down before the battery is dead enough to just “create spark”.

Another note to add, my battery died last year in march , swapped it with new battery and everything was fine , maybe the alternator finally gave out ??

    Okay...thats not great....

You need to get under the hood and start taking things apart.

This is spitballing....but I wonder if your alternator bearings are seized and what you heard was the engine pulley trying to turn a belt and slipping. That could explain everything...alternator going bad, stops charging, letting battery get low...then burns up, seizes up...and brings you to a stop with a belt.

Either way I think you need to take all the belts off make sure everything moves...including putting a socket on your engine and making sure its not seized from a slipping timing belt or something.

And again...try jumping it with the ground directly to the engine block...preferably with someone watching under the hood to see what happens.

Do you think the truck should start if I try jumping it with another vehicle even if alternator is bad ?

Absolutely. You could start and run the truck with no battery, and no alternator on jumper cables as long as nothing else was wrong. (At least until you reached the end of the cables :) )

Remember, the alternator is just a battery charger. It doesn't even start putting out power until the engine is running so the only way an alternator stops you from starting is if its seized up and physically keeping the engine from turning.

Your truck can run for a good hour or more, with a fully charged battery and no alternator (depending on what else you have on, like headlights, fans, AC, etc) just from battery power alone as your coils and fuel pump don't pull very much power.

You’re right. For some reason I thought this was a 2019. I stand corrected.

I second the seized alternator check. Take the belt off and make sure you don't have anything seized. I've replaced a starter and turned out to be a stuck A/C compressor.

Okay, well, you have to find out what is screeching...I'd take all the belts off and try again. Power steering and AC can seize on you too.

Nothing should be screeching so whatever that is, is where your problem is.

I mean, it could still be a cable issue. I still suspect there's a larger problem here, and now the starter, the alternator, and the battery are ruled out, that leaves what ... bad cable - either the positive batt cable, the line from the alternator to the batt, or the jumper from the positive batt cable to the in-engine fuse/relay box.

But yeah, sounds like there's a pulley or tensioner that caused the loud ass squeal. Not sure that's what's up, though.

@Marco05Tundy do this. Can you have someone try to turn the truck over while you jiggle the thinner cable that goes from the positive side of the battery to the fuse/relay box? Then have them try to turn it over while you jiggle the positive battery cable and the negative battery cable? If you get any extra action out of it, maybe a sign. But this is NOT a definitive "if it doesn't work, your cables are good" test.

Quick little background story , I bought this truck as my first truck for 6k , test drove it and everything seemed fine , after a few months I had a guy come look at it and he mentioned there was a significant amount of frame damage . I wanna say the previous owner crashed it and it overheated on him? I had done regular maintenance on it and it still took a shit.
Fast forward to now , I replaced the engine and everything seems to be running fine , I fell in love with the truck again !

This sucks! Glad you got it fixed but damn. Good trouble shooting tips in here though. More sticky material for sure. I need to test my alternator now for fear of it failing and catching fire!

Just wondering if it was just a broken timing belt that caused your engine lockup.

Mine did the same thing. Mine actually died while driving. It ended up being the ground wire from the negative terminal post to the body of the truck. Could have came off while driving I don’t know. Once I hooked up that little wire everything was good. 2002 Tundra.
