Friend of mine owns the last gen ram. He thinks it's been super-reliable because he only had the engine out once and replace two of the four corner airbag suspensions. Plus recalls. He's had it ~3 years. Buyers of the big 3 have a different concept of reliable.

A 5 year old vehicle that needs a new fuel pump is unfortunate but if that's all you suffer, maybe your expectations are a bit high if you think that makes Toyota substandard...

I completely agree that people don’t buy Rams based on reliability.

Not the point. You may have missed that my wife’s Highlander with 18,000 also needs a pump. Plus the Entune is jacked that they can’t fix. Plus the rear hatch molding comes off non stop. It may not be an engine pull but it still requires trip to the dealer and that’s how I personally measure reliability.
I’ve owned more Toyotas than I remember. I understand quite clearly what reliable is and isn’t.

Did the fuel pumps go out or were they part of the recall? My wife had to have the fuel pump in her Lexus NX replaced due to the recall and thought the highlander was part of that.

Both those years had fuel pump recalls on a ton of toyota products...Tacoma Highlander etc. They have been putting sub par outside manufacturer parts on vehicles for a few years now. Kind of like the issue with the waste gate.

I know this happens, but my biggest gripe is....if their QC is so much better than the rest of the universe, how do subpar manufactured parts get put into so many trucks...do they not test a sample of each lot number...

I have a 2017 Ram 1500 that is my work issued fleet truck. It's been into the shop for a week or more with electrical problems three separate times, where they had to replace multiple components, sensors, wiring, etc. (first time at 10k miles) The bedside plastic is cracked in multiple places from light use. If I load it even close to payload it's scary as F&%* to drive, wanders all over the road. The TRX is a good looking truck, and looks like a beast. But in my experience, limited as it is, RAMS are POS trucks, and I wouldn't spend my money on one, but I also buy Toyotas at 100k and drive them to 250k before I sell them, so my perspective is different than someone who trades in a truck every few years.

I agree with that, but any trip to the dealership is a knock on reliability to me. So fuel pumps, starters, water pumps etc are not maintenance items to me. I expect 200,000 miles without anything but oil, batteries, tires, and brakes.
I couldn't tell you how many times I have heard a domestic owner say that their truck was reliable because it made it to 150,000 and has only needed a transmission, water pump and starter. I'm sitting here thinking that's not reliable.
I was just watching a TFL video and they were talking about their TRX and said it has almost 11,000 miles on it and it has been dead reliable. How can you tell reliability after 11,000 miles?

I'll give you a little experience on the last 4 Toyota's I've owned

2016 Highlander XLE - Sold it with 70k miles never had any issues no recalls
2017 Highlander XLE - Sold it with 75k miles no issues no recalls
2020 Highlander XLE - Needed the fuel pump replaced at 5k miles due to a recall and had the computer swapped out at 8k miles - Needed the front brakes replaced at 15k miles (rotors warped) Got rid of it at 19k miles as we did not need it but will soon start looking again just not sure what we will buy
2021 Tundra Limited - Headliner needed to be replaced after just 2k miles as it started to sag near the driver side - also had tons of paint issues especially on both rear doors - traded it with 9k miles so the paint was never addressed as I was still dealing with Toyota on the paint when I got rid of it

Those are the latest Toyota's I have owned, I'll go on a limb and say I've probably owned more than most folks on this forum. Toyota is reliable but it seems like recently they have had some quality issues. I can go into other Toyota's that my extended family has owned that have had their fare share of issues. I knew Ram wasn't the most reliable of the bunch but as of 2019 they have changed in terms of quality. I can't speak on Ford and Chevy too much; I did own a 2003 Ford Ranger for sometime that was an absolute gem never had any issues

I wasn't paying attention to the date on the highlander but the rest wasn't in your post...

My sister has a highlander and so does my neighbour. No issues in either case (although the neighbour's is only ~6 months old so not a valid inclusion). I guess it's all anecdotal until the anecdote is yours. Then it's real... But it's a numbers game. There are less of your highlander and more of my sister's compared to the competition - and that won't make a damn bit of difference to you if you get the lemon.

I agree, I was just curious if it was a recall or actual issue. Neither is ideal.

It’s makes a difference to me. I’m open minded. We had a 2010 Highlander that was absolutely flawless. Based on reading some forums the same cannot be said with the new models.

I have a 2007 Highlander in Guatemala that we shipped from here it has about 225k miles never had an issues just oil changes and a pair of brake pads. I do get a funky rubber burn smell that comes from the rear every once in a while but don't really care to look into too much

the 2020 highlander, was it later in 2020? pandemic build? Not excusing it but I hear a lot more people complaining of build issues with pandemic builds.

My tundra had a recall for some irrelevant light issue they just sorted out during an oil change (so no extra trip to the dealer.) Other than that (and the oil changes themselves,) I've had no issues or trips. Only 28k kms on it though. It was a late 2019 build right before the pandemic so I may have been lucky.

I looked at the latest gen Rams when I was thinking about putting the deposit down on my 22 Tundra. Since I hadn't bought a new vehicle since 2013, I did my due diligence against the Big 3. I was really impressed at the value that Ram trucks had for the money. Especially, in terms of their interiors and tech features. The one issue I couldn't get past was the number of electrical issues reported. Even Ram service techs on Reddit would complain about the shotty electrical systems they have. So I passed on Ram. After that, the only other truck that was in contention for my dollars, for me at least, was the F-150 XLT with the 3.5L EcoBoost.

Very close but I wouldn't consider it a "covid car". I ordered it in November of 2019 and took delivery on February 2020. It also upset me that prior to 2020 all XLE trims actually came with leather seats and then they switched to SofTex seats. Just like my 2021 Tundra; the limited trucks had again real leather and the 2022 limited has the fake stuff

Thanks to all of you for the replies - I appreciate it. I wasn't really asking whether I should buy the 3rd gen vs the TRX, just looking for some feedback on the TRX. Although I am still curious about the 3rd gen hybrid, I don't really care for the look of the redesign. I know it's not an apples to apples comparison, but the TRX ride was significantly smoother and the interior was much nicer and more comfortable than my Tundra. Optioned out the way I want it ordering through the dealer would be around 80k (after 10k discount) . It would take a few months, but from what I've been seeing new orders seem to be moving along pretty well right now.

I understand that the gas mileage is terrible, but I also don't put a lot of miles on my trucks. That mixed with the fact I likely won't keep it for an extended period of time doesn't have me too worried.

I saw multiple people say that it doesn't make sense to buy Toyota's if you're going to trade them every couple of years, which I don't necessarily agree with. They hold their value so well I'm coming out ahead on my trades (even before the current crazy vehicle market). I'm hoping if I do decide to get the TRX the same will be true, especially if they get rid of the 6.2.

Ultimately the comments to buy what makes me happy to drive everyday and puts a smile on my face is exactly what I've been thinking. I had a damn big smile test driving that TRX, especially once I got on the highway. I asked the sales guy if I could get on it and his reply was just don't kill me!

i bought a Tundra so i could modify it and keep it forever. it is not a daily driver and I cant justify spending the 90k+ for a TRX. Personally I now realize i need a lake house and boat lol. If not or if I had too much extra money or maybe if it was more of a daily driver I would get a TRX or Raptor today. the TRX is BADASS

That TRX actually made it to 11K without major issues. Pretty reliable for a Fiat RAM. :bananadead:

I ordered a TRX last week. Stick with base or Level 1 package and it won’t take as long to get. Level 2 pushes your build back and so does the bed utility group. They increased the base MSRP $2K and level 2 also increased 2K. The people that ordered in mid December didn’t get hit with the MSRP increase.

I’m holding on to the tundra though and just driving the Ram a short period. Should be an easy flip for someone wanting to skip the line.
