We borrowed a trailer from friend to move some small “stuff” into the garage of our next home. Tundra did well, definitely sucked more gas as I used the tow/haul mode. Two trips so far about 250 miles, averaged about 10.6 to 11.1 mpg loaded / unloaded respectively. One day was a total heavy rain out day here in WA, lots of pooling water on roads, slow traffic in the Seattle suburbs and surrounding country. Some hills no mountains tho. Pleased how it handled the trailer, but it would be better with a suspension upgrade.

For a borrowed trailer you probably didn't use a WDH (weight distribution hitch). We pull an approximately 6000 pound RV with ours using a WDH, and it does quite well on the stock suspension. I'm delighted how it handles the trailer, but we've only seen Arkansas mountains so far :) We'll be crossing the Rockies next July; I'll check back then :)

You are correct, no weight distribution hitch. Trailer alone was 2200 lbs, and with load about another 2000 lbs. it a very nice trailer with lots of tie downs and wood interior. Waterproof also! The back is a fold down ramp which helps a lot.

Hello everyone. I’ve been reading through all of the travel trailer towing posts and I’m curious; am I the only one who gets 6 mpg at 62 with with my 7,000lb travel trailer? What are y’all doing to get 9-10 mpg?A57F7CF6-2ABC-49DF-A6B5-DAB06A1899F6.jpg

On my last trip I got 11mpg with 8k lbs and I chalked it up to a couple of things. I had bumped my tire pressure up a bit, my tacoma on a car trailer is gonna be a bit more aerodynamic than a travel trailer, and I kept the engine in S4 and S5 the whole time, jumping around to keep the RPM’s in the optimal range to reduce engine load, thus decreasing the amount of gas used.

Thank you for your experience. I’ve tried S5 and S4 and found that it never really wants to shift to 5th gear. I’ve also tried D in tow/haul mode and if it goes to 5th the torque converter locks and unlocks too often. It really likes 3rd fear on the small upgrades. This is where it really sucks the fuel. All of these trips are fairly flat ground.

I’m just wondering if everyone claiming 9-10 mpg are driving 45 mph for short camping trips. I love the Tundra but hate stopping every 115 miles to fill up while only going 60-65 mph.

It’s tough to say as there are a ton of variables. I know on my last 800 mile trip I was on the highway 99% of the time at 70mph with some hill in there but not much, maybe 50 miles worth. I should say I was also in tow/haul on that trip.

Our trailer is about 6000 pounds. We get 9.5 to 10.5, but that's probably 90% towing and 10% not. I have yet to fill up that at least a portion of that tank was not towing. Nonetheless, 6 seems bad. Was this a one trip calculation where you might have had a headwind?

FWIW, I run 35psi in the truck tires and 65 psi on the trailer. That max per the sidewalls on both. I run 65 to 70 on the interstate. I wonder sometimes if running too slow, particularly with hills might actually hurt your mileage by keeping it in a lower gear all the time. I know that when mine downshifts the mileage indicator falls dramatically.

Kawasaki KRX 1000 on my 18' crawler hauler trailer. I used this same trailer to haul my 85 Toyota Crawler on for years. This trailer has at least 30k miles on it. It has been all over the South East with that old truck on it. It's living a much better life now and the Tundra doesn't even know it's back there. I bought the Tundra 3 months ago and I love it more everytime I drive it.

We’ve made a few trips. The best I got was 9 mpg with a pretty good tail wind. The last couple of trips were 6-7 mpg with no significant wind on fairly flat highway. The truck tires are rated for 44 psi and I run them about 43-44. Trailer tires are 50 psi max and I run them 49-50 psi. I average about 15 mpg empty.

My travel trailer is about 5k lbs loaded. At freeway speeds, my baseline is right around 8.5 to 9.5 mpg. I can get up to about 11 mpg with a tailwind, but down to about 7.5 with a head or side wind.

My tow for today, my portable backhoe. Had to move it from the old house as the house goes up for sale next week. It was fun moving it from the far back yard to the front for loading onto the trailer. It was an epic rainy day here in the NW. Flooding and landslides due to the rain. I was out in the rain for hours, got soaked to the shorts with my rain gear. Then it took 2.5 hours of driving to go 80 miles. One road I went on was shut down due to a new landslide, so I had to turn around and drive the back roads for 10 miles in suburbs to get back to highway. Photo was next morning. A light weight tow for sure. The trailer is super light, all aluminum. You can push it with one hand. I borrowed it from some friends.

We got 2021 Apex Nano 185BH last year, and took a few trips w/ our 2015 Highlander, and once with my 4runner. Went last weekend to check the hitch setup, wash it, and take a few items over- can't wait to hit the road w/ the new (to me) rig. Dealer appt this week to get the TSB 0036-19 done.

We have friends with an Apex, and it's a very nice, well-made trailer. We looked for one but couldn't find one locally.

@rdiddy5 How did you find the visibility was with the 2021 non-towing mirrors? I want to be prepared for my incoming TT and worry that rearward visibility will be very limited. From my understanding 2020-21 have slightly different mirrors than 2019 - older.

    Great looking combo btw!!

Usually only tow a few times a year to bring the 26’ camper out for hunting season, or to bring the boat to the lake in the spring and home in the fall. Always towing around my 12’ aluminum utility trailer and atv/sled.

How wide is your incoming trailer?

I believe the Apex Nano 185BH is 90" wide. My GeoPro is 92" wide. I have the regular mirrors on my Tundra. I'm okay with them, though I wouldn't mind if they were a bit wider. If my trailer were any wider, I would more seriously consider swapping them out for tow mirrors, but I am comfortable enough with the non-towing mirrors at the width of my trailer.

I think it will be okay, we'll find out later this month. My trailer is 7.5' wide. I have some of those strap on CIPA 11950 Clip-On Towing Mirrors I can use in the meantime if needed. I've got a 1794, so it has BSM and power fold (also the seats have some kind of tie in) to prevent me from having aftermarket mirrors that retain all that functionality.

Boostauto tow mirrors would be able to retain all of that if you really wanted to.
