At least here in Canuckistan, aftermarket glass is all the same and it's all garbage. Once you replace the OEM for aftermarket, expect to go through a windshield every year. OEM glass for my '05 was about $1000. Aftermarket is $350 or so. I have an insurance rider that costs me $120 per year + $50 deductible so for $170 per year I just put in a new windshield every spring.

@Festerw and @Openbaffle nothing wrong with Safelite (EDIT: Actually, the company has gone downhill, sorry), I don't think they install their own brand of glass. They've never given me an option to pick what glass I install any time I've used them, though, and I've used them at least a half dozen times the last 25 years. They were my exclusive go-to up until about 4 years ago when I found this other company (Executive Auto Glass) who have blown Safelite's service away at similar pricing.

I think the main concern is what @Outbound mentioned. With manufacturing moving to China for everyone for cost/profit margin increases, there's a lot of subpar glass in the market right now. Let's face it: Labor is cheaper, but so is the quality control of what's coming over. I personally would like a windshield that's going to last as-long as my current OEM windshield, that's one spot on the car you don't want someone constantly exposing to cut-out and the elements, it's the last place you want risk of rust.

I was super close to going OEM, until someone on here, maybe in the last thread I linked from previous reply, mentioned Toyota's OEM is just Pilkington, rebranded. But I can't get anyone to confirm that point for our 1st gen trucks, I've only seen confirmation for the 2/2.5 gen trucks.

My current OEM/factory windshield is basically in the same place. I've been so tempted to try the cerium oxide products to tamp it down. I know it's possible, but it's a feckton of work to get done from what I understand.

Knowing my luck, I'm going to replace my windshield and will take a big f'n rock into it the 1st year. I was helping a younger coworker move a few months back, and had someone kick up a huge hunk of metal at me. I'm shocked it didn't take out the windshield, we both just looked at each other in shock, the location it hit was right in front of my face and would've done massive tissue damage, if not kill me. That's the strength of replacement windshield I need.

My windshield has no chips but it's rough looking after 20 years. I want to replace it but can't justify until I get a crack.

Does Safelite typically replace the trim around the windshield when they install new glass?

They left mine flopping around for me to reinstall several years ago. Not impressed.

No they didn't reach out until I did. All the parts came in today for rear brake rebuild except for the one discontinued self adjuster for the passenger side.
47061-34010 I'm not seeing for sale on ebay. That's the # McGeorge gave me. Originally the website said 47061-35030.

@shifty` PPG made the Toyota glass in my 2000. I have a picture of it but for some reason this forum gives me living hell with that. Non OEM, Pilkington is the best glass as long as its not outsourced to China. Pilkington is even better than using the same brand contracted by Toyota. The only thing better than Pilkington is the OEM from Toyota glass and this is not in all cases. I talked to a higher up at Pilkington, and they are all outsourced now until you get to gen 2. Now for all the Safelite folks, you are in luck! Safelite at this point uses the Fuyao window for trucks. I decided to go with a local shop when I couldn't talk to a real person on the phone from Safelite to verify. I used a local shop and the owner who has been in business 30 years installed it himself. I watched the entire process and he was able to save the top factory outside seal and reuse it, he showed me the aftermarket one and said they are junk in comparison. He also confirmed Fuyao is the best for our trucks, and said they are about 5lbs heavier than the other makers. He quoted 325 and the Safelite robot was 269. He said he would match Safelite after he finished and I refused the lower price and gave him $320 cash.

I used to make a game of driving by putting real-time mpg and average mpg next to each other. The goal was to keep real-time under the average to improve the average. It taught me a lot about how to save gas. I liked watching load as well.

As far as safelite I refused to mess with them. I had a chip that I wanted repaired and they wouldn't even talk to me without me giving them my insurance info. I told them I want to pay cash, they declined. F all that, I don't need my insurance involved for a chip. I could guess they'll say the chip can't be repaired and you need a windshield that we will bill your insurance for, and I have a high deductible.

I went to some shop and had it fixed. Took all of 30 minutes and cost me $60

Jughead has been found by an outfit from Owensboro ky.
    20211215_102800.jpg

We happened to be heading down to my sister's house, or what's left of it to help clean up... I convinced mom to come with us. We just kinda stood where my sisters house was in awe. Wasn't really sure where to start. I lit a smoke...

A man approached us, and asked if we lived here. We explained that this is what's left of my sister's house. He said they'd found a dog, and if we could identify it. I told mom, and little bro to wait. Jeff, and I walked and talked. They pulled back a piece of carpet, and there was Jughead. He was whole, and looked at peace.

I asked if they had a trash bag so I could bag him up. They did. I lifted him up, and blood poured from his nuzzle. A sign of internal damages I thought.

We hugged, and thanked them. I offered to buy them all lunch. They declined, and I insisted. They declined again. I insisted again, and again they declined. They said that we already had our hands full, and that we simply needed to take care of our people. I thought it was very odd that these guys were using my line. I finally yieled.

We were talking about where we were from, and the damages incurred. While we were talking another man approached us. He said he was running his termite, and something told him to stop. So he did. When he stepped down from his equipment he saw my eldest niece's 7 month ultrasound on the ground. Undisturbed. Pristine. He picked it up, and then heard something in the rubble. He moved some boards and found my youngest niece's toy tiger. Something was causing it to roar, and growl.

Some one else told him to turn that thing off because the noise was creepy. Underneath the tiger was Juggy. In a strange round about way, my eldest niece was right there with him through the whole thing in the form of an ultrasound picture.

Now, I'm not a very spiritual person, but there is definitely something that caused all these events to happen today after we showed up. We weren't there 20 minutes, and all of this unfolded. The men there told us that they'd been working in that same area for three days, and only after we showed up did they find them.

Inexplicable except things I cannot say here...

That's kinda surreal, Noah. Glad you found Jughead. It's still hard to comprehend how bad that tornado was. Your family is lucky to have you there.

I'm doing all I can. I've been volunteering as much as possible. Yesterday was a 13 hour day sawing, cutting, sorting, and helping.

Juggy was in much better shape than roxie.

We delivered his remains to my eldest niece. It was her dog. She is 14 years old. Youngest niece is 7 yo.

We let the family see him, and I did my best to keep his bloody muzzle hidden by the trash bags. To minimize the damage. Of the 10 of us there, I was the only one not crying. We told them the story that I shared above, but in greater detail.

My BIL thanked me for taking care of them, and volunteering. I said as I have said many many times before. "I take care of my people." He started crying and said "I know. You always have. As long as you're still here I know we'll be okay. Always."

I held my niece as she played with juggys ears. She uncovered his muzzle, and then started crying more. I decided it was time to close the trunk, and usher them inside. Church tonight.

I leaned into my BIL ear and whispered. Both of them need to wash their hands. Tell them gently. I don't want them to think their dog is contagious or some shit. Just being cautious.

My BIL's dad pulled me aside after everyone went inside, and thanked me personally. He told me that he wished his son was more like me. I wasn't sure what to say so I just said thanks.

I told them that I will be burying Juggy with Roxie. He asked if I needed help, and I declined. I explained that he is already doing enough giving them a place to live.

Don't apologize. When you are in a position to help others in times of crisis, it's easy lose sight of self. It's good to have some outlets. Even a bunch of truck nerds.

Gotta get it out. Don't bottle that kind of stuff up.
And it really humanizes the situation for those of us who can only see it through the lens of the media...be it TV or phone.

Who are you calling a nerd?
And since when do we even talk about trucks?

Thanks fellas. I'm so thankful that I fought for those 10 days between jobs even though I only needed one.

I didn't really understand then, but I understand now.

Scheduled new tires for the corolla. Should be here tomorrow or Friday. Need new shoes before I start my heavy commuting.

Agreed. Also varies based on how you brew it. Been brewing in a chemex a long time and would go back to anything else.

Are you able to specify the aftermarket maker? My glass company let me pick PPG, the ones who made the factory glass on mine.
