1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

Good morning team!

I went into 4WP last night and talked about tires.
They strongly recommended the MT Baja Boss AT over everything else on my list. (what I was hoping for, but did not hint at to get as honest a recommendation as possible)
I asked them about the Cooper Rugged Treks and they said they're still so new (and uncommon) that they don't really have any basis for comparison. Best I can tell, they just don't sell them so they don't see them.

So those are the two I'm down to.

So here's the primary differences:
-The MTs are 33x12.5x17
-The Coopers are 285/70r17
-The MTs are about $200 more
-The MTs are 8lbs per tire heavier
-The Coopers are load range E
-The MTs are load range D
-The Coopers are sourced through work from TireRack
-The MTs are sourced through work from 4WP

To my inexperienced brain, the MTs are the way to go. Softer sidewalls and rowdier looks make me feel like I'll be happier. But my racecar brain is absolutely shitting its pants at +8lbs per corner.

Any insight here is hugely appreciated.

 

NGL, when I saw that 8lb add per tire, I immediately thought, "yeah, screw that, don't need to bother looking at any other numbers..."

Tough call. Maybe I'm overreacting. It's only 16lbs of added rotational weight across the rear axle, but ... Meh.

Now that i have daylight, it looks like the rear trans line goes to the top port of the cooler. Maybe someone could verify.

 

fun fact, MT, Dick Cepek, are both subsidiaries of Cooper Tire.

If you're set between those two, I'd go the Coopers. the $200 price differential, and the fuel economy you'll gain with the 32lbs less rotational mass will be worth any negligible performance differences.

Looking to replaces my OEM leaf springs as they are starting to splay a lot and the bushings are looking pretty shot. Currently I have Bilstein shocks all around and I am sitting level since I went 2 clicks up on my fronts. I am planning to go to 33s and will be getting new to new OME springs to get rid of my front preload. (looking for information on which front springs to get if I'm planning to go with BFF or COR front bumper) I do not tow or have lots of weight in the rear.

What kind of leaf springs can I get so I am level and don't have to (Add a Leaf ) And I don't want to be ass high with really tough leaf springs. Found this website I just don't understand Leaf spring weight calculations

Yeah, and it's much easier to explain why you're riding coopers than it is riding dicks!

 

This is really confusing to me. But I would figure out your front, then move to the back. I'm on my third leaf pack counting OEM to get where I wanted (partly because I came to realize I needed MD springs). Regardless, get your front set, and you will have a better idea what level or slight rake will require.

 

I went with the 2885 springs on my bilstein 5100s bottom notch. Oem front bumper and don’t plan to change.
I think you’d want the 2886 at least with a steel bumper

 

Hahaha didn't mean to confused with OEM VS OME and I was trying to see what ppl did since I know a lot of guys do 886 fronts and AAL in the back which I'm trying to avoid.

Leafs have to changed asap front is in the near future....... bad position I guess .

 

Was it running ok? My truck runs fine for a month now at least. Just those codes.

How did you find out the gasket was cracked? Is there a test or you gotta open it up?

 

Well, if you have to do rears first, that's OK. You can go stock height, which puts you roughly level with a 2-2.5 lift up front. That's only level until you load it though, then you squat. Now you are looking at AAL or something. Or get springs built 1.5"-2" over, that rake empty but perform better with weight. My point is, level is only level when empty, unless your springs are so stiff they ride like crap, or you have add-ons to help. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted my springs to do and how to get there. Spring height is only part of it.

 

I could hear hissing from under the intake, so it was sucking in unmetered air causing it to run lean. It definitely wasn't running right. It idled like shit and backfired through the intake. To check your IM gasket, you have to listen, then pull the intake if it's suspect.

 

Potential power adder. Will experiment once I have one for the mr2, but based off displacement and hp, the Frankenstein Motorworks MAF pipe may actually make gains if VF tuner allows maf tunning. 3.5 gets like 15-20hp gains from it. Hmm

Pops and mys last morning in the maintenance office together.



Kinda sad, but kinda not. More scared now than when I agreed to the new job.

I'm still learning at my current employer, but I'm learning more about the old ways. The ways that aren't the future of this industry. I've got one hell of a grasp on the mechanical side of things, but that's 98% of what I'm learning here.

I want to know more about PLCs, and programming. As automation becomes more, and more prevalent in the industrial setting. That will eventually be the ticket to better jobs. Even an introductory course would be better than what I've got now.

In essence, what I'm saying is I'm comfortable here because I know 98% of the usual problems, and am crafty enough to bull shit my way through the other 2%. Due to my shift, I'm not learning new things here because of the culture here. I'm excited to learn, and have always been vocal about that. Unfortunately, it's fallen on deaf ears...

Walking into a completely different industry with a completely different set of requirements without a general understanding of the process is scary. I've seen the inside of the plant, and met the maintenance guys on 1st. They seem like good, genuine people. Dirty clothes, and hard workers like me. The maintenance team lead said that he would personally take care of me as far as educating me to be better for them. I hope those aren't empty words because I know I'm going to need help the get started...

All I need is a push, and some guidance.

I'm not quite sure where exactly I'm going to end up in life, but I know that my current plan will ensure future jobs should it prove to be what I was told it is..m

I'm nervous. I'm scared. I'm leaving being the senior guy on shift to the very bottom of the ladder. I'm okay with that, but it's still scary.

I understand that feeling. I was the same way starting here at my new job in October. You got this. Your drive and experience will show and they'll be glad they hired you. What shift are you gonna be working?

They haven't decided yet for sure which makes me nervous... they told me 2nd or 3rd eventually, but there should be a short training period on days.

 

These factories literally run 24/7?
We don’t have much like that out here besides maybe the power plant.

 

95% out here are continuous operations. 25/8.

The other 5% are day shift only, and you have to know somebody to get on board there.

I'm a little frazzled at the moment...

 

I literally made myself sick in the weeks leading up to and making the decision. After I told my boss I was nervous the whole time during my 3 week notice. When I actually started here I was excited and nervous. Since then, I've found where I fit in the machine and enjoy going to work. More hours, more pay, more benefits. In the end it was a win/win.

 

Today is the only day I've felt sick, so I completely get where you're coming from there. I hope I find my place quickly. Won't be totally grasping in the dark, but it's damned close to dusk, I tell you h'what.

 

In my experience as a leader (official and non), I have always done my very best to hire good people who want to work and want to learn.
You can teach anyone the skills they need to do most jobs.
You can't make them good people or give them the desire to work.

My interviews were never from a form, and didn't really focus on work. They focused on the person being interviewed and then about myself. I wanted to hire people I could count on and get along with. The job was always secondary or tertiary.
My hope is that this is how your new company is.

And even if it isn't, they'll quickly learn what sort of man you are and you'll be a-ok.

I went through last November what you're doing now. Left as a the subject matter expert and lynchpin of my department to become the FNG in an entirely new field. Here I am a year later and I am oft lauded as the best in my department.

What I'm trying to say is that it's more about the worker than the work. I have full confidence you'll succeed at anything you put your mind to.
