I redid my decking last year. I had previous repaired framing. Had to do it in stages for cost reasons.
It has come time to stain it. I don't need to or really even want to match the color that's their but I could. Just looking for advice on what products to use and if anyone has experience with this. It's pressure treated lumber. I'll clean it and use a wood brightener then stain. Thanks for any advice

I recommend sanding the deck prior to staining to clean and smooth out potential splinters

I always thought that the drift would stain looked pretty cool and aged well in the sun. But really it depends what you like bro. Looking good!

Might be worth it to look at sikkens products usually found at a real paint supply.

Sikkens is a good product but make sure you follow all guidelines when applying. I have seen some messed up decks from people using this brand and don't have an understanding of it. Flood also makes some good products as well. Biggest thing is prep it correctly, when rolling make sure you use long when strokes to avoid lap marks. I usually will run 2 boards at a time and go full length and repeat until done. It makes for a better finished product.

Thanks guys. Doing the "picture framing" work was a pain in the ass. Took much more work, had to add extra framing and bracing but it was well worth it for the look and no end grain showing. Here a few pics of the process.

Then I removed the railings, added new top and bottom rails, reused 4x4 posts which were good and well anchored also kept the ballasters which saved me a few hundred bucks and they were in good shape.
I used GRK deck screws and GRK structural screws to beef up framing. I highly recommend GRK products. So nice to work with. Also I added this outlet because I had no power out there.

I did the deck about 10 months ago. You think I should wait longer? I really want to make sure I do it right so I'm not doing it every year

Rule of thumb for pressure treated lumber is if you spill some water on it and the water beads then its not ready to accept a topcoat.

Anyone have experience with Benjamin Moore arbor coat oil based deck stain. Or TWP stain? Local store has them both.

I need to stop reading online reviews and just buy something lol.
Now I'm considering Armstrong Clark stain. Has great reviews but not available locally, so I'd have to order online.

LOL.....Yes, online reviews are not reliable as you have inexperienced people applying the product and not having a clue on what they are doing....all I can tell you is my experience with Penofin. My deck was 850 sq. feet ........it lasted for a good 7 years before I had to treat it again.

I did live on the Oregon Coast at the time I had the deck...I now live up in Portland....There are probably a few other good stains out on the market, just giving you my experience with the Penofin.....and the Oregon Coast gets A LOT OF RAIN !!!....Thompsons water stain IMO....IS GARBAGE !!!

Finally got around to getting the deck cleaned and prepped for stain today. I used a product called restore a deck. It has a cleaner and a wood brightener. I used my power washer as well and I think it came out great. Took a couple hours but the gray color is all gone and the wood looks even and brand new. It rained after I finished so only pic I have now, the deck is wet. Will post more pics as I go.

This attachment came with my Kärcher post washer. I was surprised how well it worked and the time and effort it saved me

I ended up getting 5 gallons of armstrong clark oil based stain online. It was $20 more than most 5 gallon pails I could find at big box stores. Shipping was free and I got the restore a deck along with it for $40, and they sent enough of that to use on my deck twice so I will have enough for the next restain

Just make sure before you stain you let the deck wood dry out since you power washed it . I do like the Sekins products as well. Very good stuff if applied correctly. If you are ever in doubt about the process call the phone number on the product for questions. I find they often tell you tips and hints you don't find on the product labels.

It will have at least 3 or 4 days to dry by the time I'll be able to get around to staining it.
