More of a technique than a recipe.

I use 80/20 ground beef and weigh them out into 1/4lb loosely packed balls. No need to form a neat ball, it's going to get smashed anyway.
I use 1/4lb balls because those fit my smash burger press without oozing out the side. Most adults will use 2 patties per burger, wives and kids use 1.

I heat the griddle to about 450 and smash the burger on it and hold it down for a few seconds, using parchment paper between the patty and the press so it doesn't stick to the press. I used to put a little oil or butter down, but now I don't. The cleaner/drier the surface is, the more it sticks to the griddle, which is what you want for the best crust.

Cook until the fat starts bubbling through the other side, and the sides of the patty turn brown, then flip.

You're going to need a quality burger turner with a very sharp edge, because that patty is going to be stuck AF to the griddle. It needs to be wider than the patty, so get a wide one.
Come at it at a 45 degree angle, and try to scrape the whole burger up without having any stick to the griddle. You'll probably butcher the first patty until you get a feel for what's going on. The founder of Smash Burger has a good YouTube vid on the technique.

If you cook another round of patties I always degrease by adding water and scraping it across the griddle and into the trap. The fat left behind from the previous batch is enough to make the patty not want to stick, so the crust is never as good as the first round. Even if you wipe it down, it won't stick, so cleaning with water is important.

Flip, add your favorite seasoning, throw the cheese on. After flipping, the burger stays on only long enough to melt the cheese.
With thicker cheese I like to put a cheese melting dome over it to along with a spritz of water underneath to speed it along. At the point you flip the burger, it's basically done so you don't want it cooking for a long time or it will get dry.

Toast the bun, mayo on both sides (it helps keep the bun from getting soggy from the juices of the burger.)
Shredded lettuce on the bottom, followed by tomato, then the meat. Pickle and onion on top, along with ketchup and mustard.

Build your own. I salvaged a nice Weber grill from a guy for cheap. Replaced the regulators, burner tubes, and heat deflectors. I s*** canned the rusted out cart and built a nice outdoor island.

Grillegrates definitely are the best. I have some heavy cast iron “mangrate” brand on my gas grill. They are a huge improvement over grilling on just the factory stuff.

As promised, here is what we purchased. I wanted something that had a great warranty, had full replacement parts available, removable drip pan, not huge $$$. So after a lot of research, went with Napoleon. This is the Rogue XT, 3 burner with smoker box. Just did the initial burn in and will be grilling ribeyes for dinner!

Thanks for everyone's input and feedback. This one was a bit more than I planned to spend but I think the warranty and quality were worth it, $599

A weber summit is about as good as it gets. I git mine for $2500 or so maybe 15 years ago. I dont use gas much anymore but I love that grill!

Just following up since I saw a recent reply to this post.

Had the Napoleon for a while now, used it quite a bit and it is the best grill I have ever owned or cooked on! It is amazing for the price. Excellent quality and performance.

Well, I'm moving and can't take the built in Summit with me. I'm having to settle for a less expensive option for now.
Monument Stainless Steel 6-Burner Liquid Propane Gas Grill with 1 Side Burner Model #77352
It looks pretty good. We'll see how well it performs. I'm supposed to take delivery on Sunday 12.5

It's getting close to grilling season, bringing this thread back to life!

You still liking the Blue Rhino? Any issues?
I'm going to try and pull the trigger on a griddle soon before there's a summer price bump. Amazon has it for $398 right now.

I only have experience with BS. I also bought the soft cover, opposed to hard. Weather can cause it to shrink / expand as I’ve seen some experience issues with that. Just another consideration for the cover

    Right on, thanks.
I think I'll go with a BS, as far as you know is there only one 36" model to look at?
I would prefer the grease trap up front, but that's not a deal breaker.

Three months later, still the same? I got the Prestige 665 last week, cooked two steaks on it last Sunday, it's like learning to grill all over again, so consistent. No hot spots and 1st time I've had 5 burners. And a sear burner. Lifetime warranty on the important stuff and 15 years on everything else sold it for me. Real deal cook tomorrow, 10 steaks and about a dozen chicken kabobs.

I have the hard cover for the griddle surface and if you add something to seal the screws on top its a lifesaver. I cook on mine year round and I don't use. the soft cover. you can see it in this pic hanging off the back

I got a traeger last year and after years of only doing charcoal the pellet grill is my go to grill for most things. I still use a smoker for pork butt and ribs and maybe gas for steaks and burgers

So weber bought Ducane and then they created The Genesis series. I have had my Ducane for 24 years now. replaced some burners and plates over the years but still works great. works better than my Built-in Bull16476482029738251805564532965928.jpg

I have a WSM for ribs, pork butt and thanksgiving turkey, traeger for fish, chicken and pork tenderlon - use this one 3x a week, a weber gas that barely ever gets used and a big green egg that really only gets used for roadside chicken. I must have the right tool for the job lol

I almost did that but there is no grease trap that Im aware of. A package of Bacon generates much more grease than I thought it would. the griddle is worth the $ to me just for breakfast prep. Bacon, hash browns, onions - I wish I got mine years ago

get the griddle just for bacon , steak and cheese, onions and breakfast potatos - you wont regrett it
