    wtf

    um, ok.

Yeah, if y’all ever need any advice on mechanical fastening, nails, anchors or pretty much anything used to put shit together, I sold construction fasteners and products for 18 years.
I assisted with R&D at the company I worked for, Conducted in the field testing and submitted tons of information for approvals on many of the screws you see being used today. If any of you crew have a question, Feel free to hit me up. I also did commercial construction previous to that and I currently build shit.
If it goes above my head I’m sure @RainMan_PNW Would be happy to assist with any questions as well.

Haha ok, it took about 13 minutes before I head the “ew wtf is this?”
That could be lots of stuff in this house and I didn’t know which room it came from. Then I knew she was in the bathroom, I fixed the hole didn’t I?!
The ew wtf is this, i had early this morning walking back to bed I step on something cold and wet and juicy…….. usually it’s cat vomit……. It was the cats but not vomit. The big cat LOVES tomatoes, he stole two actually and half ate one in the hallway by my door for me to step on.

    Okay, here’s one that always bothered me;
Some concrete jobs specify epoxy coated rebar. They even make you use coated tie wire and epoxy paint any cut rebar ends.
We all know that the concrete binds to the deformed bumps on the rebar.
On other jobs with regular rebar, when you get a little form oil overspray on the steel, the engineers and inspectors go apeshit about the oil and make you sandblast it spotless.
    WTF?

    Ive highlighted your issue.

    .

    .

    .
This one may be more up Casey’s ally.

I’ve found this to be a regional thing.
At times based on local codes and at times based on the design and engineering firms on the project.
Some would say, it’s a safety thing.
Some would say, it’s just extra reassurance.
Some would say, it’s redundant overkill done purposely.

I will say though, in concrete failures, it can often be traced back to contamination of the inner rebar that was the cause of failure.

I was on a job where there were instructions to clean every bit of manufacturing oil off of the corrugated metal decking before welding to the red iron.
Over 250,000 sqft cleaned by hand. Both sides.

It really boils down to that safety divisor.

Most failures I have seen are the result of insufficient coverage; having the steel too close to the surface or form. Road chemicals or ocean salts penetrate due to porosity and the rebar completely corrodes leaving little tunnels or else the thin cover of concrete spalls and cracks.

    Absolutely.
Even sufficient coverage can be affected by other issues.
When firing a powder tool, a gas tool or drilling for an anchor into the concrete, can leave little areas of vulnerability allowing penetration.

Oh, hey, it's Europe too now. @gosolo If you need a neighbor, I might like to find myself on the other coast of the Adriatic. The whole thing, if that's fine with the rest of you guys. Whatever clearing mechanism we were using for N.A., let's adjust settings so that only the other men get gone. I could dig an eastern european harem...

And there’s a submarine test facility nearby too. Given the central location, this may need to be our capital.
