13WL Brake Upgrade

The cheap 17" wheel rotors appear to be one piece. The expensive options are all two-piece rotors.

 

Never ask you why you would have not done the 14wa conversion?

I have read that is very rare, now that I'm thinking I have read that he's tried everything possible but not sure if he changed his M/C.

Talking about M/C your doing the Sequoia conversion from SOS correct? What are you doing about the booster?

 

booster is staying stock. adapter for sequoia master.. then my old master thats barely 2 years old fits my tacoma so its going on the 2002.



@FirstGenVol replaced his master with a new OEM unit.

 

Do you think a T100 booster with the Sequoia M/C will be better? Is the Sequoia booster the same as ours?

 

t100 booster will not bolt up to the sequoia setup without a custom adapter no one makes. plus it will make finding parts harder if you go t100 since that trucks newest model is damn near 25 years old now.

 

Ok im sure It be good with normal booster. My plan is 14wa, EBC slotted rotors orange pads and SOS Sequoia M/C. Down the road rear disc

 

dont waste your money on the master until you do rear disc. the circuit is setup different and would likely make the brakes feel worse if the drums are still on

 

Shit ok so are you saying don't do the 14WA ethier snice I can't upgrade the M/C?

Go figure that's a risky decision, most likely going to wait as my WL are hold up pretty good. Just trying to put a part list together so I can have everything ready. So I have the front covered know how to see about the rear.

 

Personally I'd wait on the 14WA until you are having problems. If the 13WL are working ok for you then I'd stick to that. Why open up a can of worms that may lead to future problems.

Rotors and pads are cheap enough that even if you had to replace them every two years, that's still the cost of two tanks of gas for these trucks.

Also, don't know if mentioned this before, but make sure the rears are working well and LSPV is set. Then try that. I don't tow, but I have been happy enough with he brakes on my 01 and 06 tundras. They're not as good as a new car, but they work and stop me just fine.

Thank you so yea they are ok not perfect, they feel spongy and not firm. The rear brakes should be adjusted good. I have to check the LSPV as that I'm sure is not right. Parking brake works perfectly. I also have stainless brake lines. Next I'm doing is changing fluid.

 

Pads are cheap if you accept lower standards than Dan the Man with the orange compound band.

FWIW, I should have some completely brand new (possibly installed and then removed) 13WE stoptech sport pads once the 13WL calipers arrive and get swapped out. And some calipers too for that matter, though who would bolt on 13we calipers instead of 13wl I don't know. Just in case someone wants the pads, assuming I cannot use them on the Tacoma.

Yeah, so, premium rotors and those $200 pads, we're beyond a couple of tanks of gas, right? Unless my back-o-envelope math is off?

Ok so im back to the drawing board most likely I guess I'm going to stay with the WL and do the rear disc conversion and Sequoia M/C. How reliable will that combination be?

 

There is no exact answer to that question. I have no regrets on adding discs and the MC to my truck. The truck hasn't blown up on me or gave me any issues since install so I guess it's reliable?

@Dave8699, I mean this in the nicest way possible, but a lot of the questions you're asking about, you'll have to find out for yourself, as in no one has an exact answer. The disc conversion and 14WA is unknown territory for 90-95% of people. I wouldn't trust my own answers I'm giving you as sacrosanct as I'm not a Toyota tech.

I did my disc conversion pretty much blind without any step-by-step instructions. Sure, I came on here and asked for help in some cases, such as diagnosing whether the MC piston rod was too long, but I knew from the beginning a lot of this work was going to rely on my own knowledge and abilities.

 

Sorry if you already mentioned this, but what's the end goal? Are you having problems with your current set up?

 

Yeah, but I'd hope with that set up you'd get more than a few years

I was meaning more with decent $60 rotors and $50 pads. The EBC greenstuff pads are $80, the Hawk LTS are $70, Akebono premium are $60 and the powerstop are $40.

On a side note, has anyone gone from 13WE to 13WL and had a mushy pedal? In theory it shouldn't because the piston is the same size, just the caliper is larger to accommodate larger pads

I didn’t realize the greenstuff was so much less than orange. Go figure. Maybe I’ll get the green ones after all. Or maybe be I should just get orange. Hah. 3 sets of new brake pads and none fit the Tacoma, at least I’ll have a backup set ready.

 

The yellow aren't terrible, it's the orange that jump in price

 

You only want orange if your towing near capacity a lot.

 

So I have no problems but I do have that feeling that if I have to slam on the brakes it takes a while to stop. My end goal is to have as close as possible to newer truck brakes.I have WL and decent shape rotors with I believe its green pads but not sure completely.

I only tow in the summer around 5500 - 5800lb.
