I live in NJ but have cabin in NY. I love fishing and spend more than I tell my wife on high end rods. I don't want to leave them at my place in NY and I need to transport them safely between N.Y. and NJ. Before the tundra I was able to hang them from the ceiling in my SUV. any ideas? All the rods are between 6' 10" and 7' 6".

    Thanks
    Mike

Does your bed have a tonneau cover ? I made a make shift rod holder with 6 rod holders from academy sports n outdoors and 2 1x8 planks treated wood the back of the boards had 3 metal straps galvanized 1" wide 6" long drilled 4 holes spaced them out screwed on the back then 2 more metal straps foot n half long made them into j shapes that screwed to back of boards then hung over back of bed if you have a tool box I screwed to tool box but i made 2 wedges to tip the top of rod holder forward so that tool box lid wont hit rods

I custom made my rod holders. It's on my build page. For something quick and inexpensive. Take and measure the slots in your bed. Cut a 2x8" treated to fit. Get you some of the galvanized 1" straps aramirez73 suggested and buy you some 2" pvc piping. Cut your pvc to fit , also cut you a notch where your reel will sit down in pipe. Secure pipe with straps. If you want to get a little more fancy, take another 2x8" and put it on top of your installed 2x8" , cut it @ a 45* angle and install your pvc pipe on the top plate. This will have your rods @ a angle instead of straight up. Keeps them low profile and away from tree limbs . One quick note, when I say cut it @ 45, I mean cut your 2x8 that will sit vertical, and cut the top off @ a 45. Then secure your other 2x8 to that. Not insulting your intelligence, just making sure I'm making sense. Haha. Hope this helps. Post pic of you do it. Thanks

I use 1" conduit, width of bed, and cut in half. Use a 1" coupler in center of pipe for easy removal. Wrapped w 3m type pipe insulation so rods aren't riding on pipe. I have notched the insulation so rods don't "slide" while driving. Use a bungee cord to secure them. Can load pics if you would like. Camping at the moment...

Yes Bob, thought it was in my build, but found it when unique mod contest was ran.

Ron, I would imagine transportability. You can always put them in your cab if you have to stop and go into store or something. If you're like me, I don't want my rods bouncing around in the back of my truck, too much $$$$

I think he's more talking about a large PVC pipe that you put the entire rod in. Maybe three or 4 inch PVC. Put a cap on the back of the pipe and a female adapter with a screw on plug at the end where you put the rod in at.

Yeah, that would be for like traveling abroad, then you would go with travel rods. I agree with you on that.

But you could mount the pipe to the truck somewhere like the deck rail system.

I realize the poles are too long for that. But it would fit corner to corner.

Pipe i used was 2" pvc...notch i cut out was almost 3/4 of an inch wide inch n a half long so rods can sit and 2 one inch holes so i can screw to back of board.. length of pvc i believe is foot n a half...but now they already sell those white rod holders with the top part flanged out with notches n holes to secure few bucks a piece

I was thinking those rubber straps I saw someone use to mount their fire extinguisher would work perfectly for the pipe. Shit you could even rig some plumbers tape and a couple of big washers with nuts and bolts.
Even more stealth would be some black ABS pipe.

Don't know why it doubled up the 2nd pic.. but this is my "rack"... About 8 or so inches away from tailgate, so rods do not bounce off of it. I do not have a tool box and usually travel with reels on...

Have you looked at the bass master pros trucks? Most are tundras with the camper top deal on the back and some large pvc like tubes for rods. I don't have a camper top but would like to get a tube similar to what they use and mount them on the side rails when I go fishing.

My rod rack bolts to my tool box. Works well and I can move it between trucks.

Longer list than the wife needs to know about....
I guess it would depend on the type of fishing rod you are transporting.
a buddy has one of these on his topper for his fly rods. The boxes are really nice and strong. Saw one after a roll over and the rods survived.

If I had a topper I would have went with one of these solutions. Easy, durable and efficient.

Ive got a set of these Big Johns adjustable rod holders bolted to my tailgate that work great. I'll carry rods up to 11' in it.
