I think I’m sold. Center in/out and 2.5”? Gonna weld it in till headers and full exhaust in the future.

My only hesitation to date is the volume at idle. Is it pretty tame? Don’t want my neighbors hating me even more than they do by waking them up at 5:30am. I’ll keep the spintech but now need to decide on long or short tube headers.

 

@Darkness and @jImmegart you guys are running JBA shorties, Spintech Prostreet muffler, no resonator and the stock pipe dumped right after the rear axle to the side correct?

My question is I'm assuming you guys reused the factory cat and all the factory piping?

In my case my exhaust is pretty rusted and I would like to change it up. What would be theist cost effective way to replace everything from the cats back? Not sure if I would like to go with headers yet. I see mostly everyone goes with jba shorties but why not longtubes and some hi flow cats?

Unless you can weld and bend pipe in your garage, it would be best to just take it to a exhaust/muffler shop and let them take care of it all.

 

Cold starts are a bit loud outside the truck. Quieter than say a duramax diesel but for sure louder than what you're used to. If low rpm is a concern then a resonator would be smart. When mine still had the stock resonator it was more quiet at idle and low rpm. The stock resonator is actually straight through, it doesn't hinder anything at wide open throttle and helps to muffle resonance at low rpm. I cut mine out because I like to party.

@jImmegart doesn't have headers but the rest is true. We have almost the same setup except I have short headers.

The topic of long tube vs short, if I lived where long tubes were legal to pass inspection I would have them. I'm in California so I'm stuck with shorties (still considering going to long tubes and pointing out my carb sticker to the ref).

For your exhaust, if the piping is rotted out your best bet is to find a GOOD exhaust shop and have them fab up the pipes from the cats back, using your muffler of choice and resonator if needed. I would run 2.25" pipe from the cats to a Y and run 2.5" pipe from the Y out. Stock pipe seems to be in metric, 60mm I believe which is roughly 2.39" but stepping up to 2.5 won't hurt. I have a long section of 2.5 in mine.

For cats, I haven't seen anybody successfully run high flows without a cel, most either run a simulator or keep stock cats in. I haven't gone down any of those paths and can't be sure what works. Maybe spacers on the O2 work, it does on other cars but Toyota makes smart computers.

 

I love learning so I ask alot of questions. So im in NJ and you can have long tube I have them on my ZL1 with hi flow cats, so for knowledge purposes. Best system would be JBA long tubes which have a 2.5 collector, 2.5 hi flow cats, y pipe to a Spintech Prostreet muffler existing to the back where the stock exhaust ends.

If going long tube I would run 2.5 pipe all the way from the cats back. The collectors on those are 2.5" so dropping to 2.25" right after the cats might hurt. What you described is what I would run if I didn't have smog checks every 2 years. With factory cats I don't think a cel would show up. They don't really seem to "care about" flow, just metering the input and output. So if they're cleaning the exhaust you shouldn't see a cel.


@FrenchToasty has this kind of setup with dual exhaust, he is experimenting with a reducer to 2.25 at the tips. I like single exhaust myself.

 

I have smog every 2 years also but as long as no CEL I'm good to go. I like single exhaust also, now for argument sake. Does are truck gain any power from short or long tubes? Does @dirtydeeds do exhaust for are 1st gens?

 

He does. They aren't cheap but most customers are happy. You're paying for all the research and taking away any guessing.

For short headers it's a very hot debate. Some say power is gained, some say nothing happened, some say power is lost. I didn't go doing any dyno runs but my pulls on the freeway felt stronger after putting shorties on. Long tubes on the other hand have no debate, definite power increase. I have only seen one guy say his truck ran worse with long tubes and those weren't the JBA long tubes, it was a brand you can't get anymore.

 

Do you know if our trucks need to be tuned to run long tubes or shorties? Or it doesn't make no difference. I tow a decent amount in the summer and any extra TQ or HP I can get will help.

 

I plan on running the stock resonator to keep idle somewhat quieter. Sounds like JBA long tubes will be the pick. Appreciate it Luis!

I'm adding it to my list just dropped $$$$ on rebuilding front and rear suspension, but I'm asking now so I now what I should start ordering for the future. It would be nice if @dirtydeeds dropped in to see what he offers.

 

You don't need a tune. You may get an extra couple horses from one but unless you know somebody who can give a great deal its too expensive for what you'll get. You'll get the power without a tune.

 

So do you think shorties and long tube will be pretty close to each other HP,TQ wise? I'm wondering how much a full system fro dirtydeeds run. Do they use JBA headers also or do they make there own.

 

No, long tubes will be ahead. Maybe 20hp ahead. He uses jba long tubes

 

The initial start up will be a bit loud because of how high our trucks idle at start but once the RPM's drop it's surprisingly quiet. I left the stock resonator in place.

 

It purrs. Following directly behind him, I can hear his truck over mine until about 45 MPH.

 

So bringing this topic up again snice I have a hole on my muffler and resonator. So thinking in getting the following and taking it to an exhaust shop to connect everything up. Let me know if I have everything needed. Also what type of flange do I need to get to connect to the stock cat?

For those of you with the Spintech... If you buy the 2.5" center inlet & outlet, can you just cut the existing pipe & install this directly with a few muffler clamps? Or do you need more parts?

 

The stock muffler is a lot longer than the Spintech. You'll need around 18" of pipe as well. A muffler shop won't charge much to weld one in.

 

I second guessed if I ordered the right muffler when I opened the spintech box. Looks about half the size of the stock muffler, maybe.

 

Audible Volume is related to physical volume. Gonna wanna work on throttle control to make it sound good. My titan has a tiny muffler, and as long as im gentle it sounds great, if i lay into it, it ‘slaps’ and if i carry the rpm too high it ‘claps’.

 

They're pretty small. I think about 4x6x12 for the muffler body, not counting the inlet and outlet pipes. I was pretty surprised the first time I saw them.

You got the 6000 series right? Not the 9000, the 9000 is tiny, I've seen cell phones with a bigger footprint.

Post a video on acceleration once you get it installed if you can. I'm curious to hear one when vvt-i kicks in.

 

Yeah, I got the 6000. Might have some time to weld it in this weekend. Then gotta figure out how to upload to YouTube, that’s the difficult part.

 

Too many other projects. Gonna have to wait till next week after Death Valley.

 

I have a Walker system from manifolds back, I'm not really happy with it. It's got a weird vibration when accelerating and the rpms hit about 2400-2500. It isn't there above or below that point. Wish I would've spent more on a nicer system.
