As in many things, 90% of the quick oil change shops ruin the reputation of the other 10%. Your brother ran a good shop. Those are hard to find. It doesn't surprise me that Toyota doesn't use impact wrenches on the oil plugs, they don't want angry customers. Customers do get a bit miffed when they hear that the oil pan has to be replaced. They get down right cranky when their car starts leaking oil from a cross threaded plug, and they tend to get stomping mad when the drain plug falls out and the lack of oil damages the engine. All in all, if I have to rely on quick change oil shops, I'll just roll it into the ditch and get it over with.

It’s a shame if this is how customers are treated.

I haven’t seen Toyota use impacts in the few times I’ve actually used them but I definitely haven’t seen them use a torque wrench either.

Impact or not, I’ve had my run ins with poor performing techs

Had to have our 4runner skid plate replaced after a tech either cross threaded or over torqued multiple bolts.

then later, same vehicle the tech over tightened the canister filter, to the point that I broke my filter wrench trying to remove it.

    Agreed.
One more reason for me. I've never stripped an oil drain plug but it always occurs to me everytime I tighten one down that it's going to start turning easily and my stomach will turn. I've mentioned before, first thing I do to a new vehicle I get, never had a problem, appreciate it every time I use it. Japanese quality.
    Fumoto Tips:
Put a light smear of high temp sealant on the threads along with the blue washer
Paint pen a line marker when you're done tightening, a quick look over the years will tell you it's never moved.

Are you sure it's a dumb rumor and not an inconvenient truth? I guess it depends on which side of the impact wrench you're on.

Weird because on the Fumoto site they only show B27's and a B1 as compatible with the 5.7. Where did you find the B28?

Just looking for some reason why people are using it.

Personally I went with the ValvoMax but had a Fumoto on my 4.7 without any issues.

Same here on the oil filter cover after last free change. I had to use a 2' cheater bar and buy a new filter wrench. My neighbor had the hold my legs. I am guessing 130 ft lbs based on past experience doing front end work. I doubt they used a cheater bar to tighten it. Manager says the techs all have torque wrenches. I said you better teach them how to use them.
