Gas tank supposed to hold 38 gallons?

So my window sticker says 38 gallon tank, but I have never put more than 30 gallons, even when I have ran it down to 20 miles left in the tank.

Has anyone else noticed this? Should I take my TRD Pro back to the dealerahip?

 

Yeah. You'll never pump more than 30 gallons on a fill up. For someone like me that likes to do the math, it drives me nuts. But understand why it's like that and it is what it is.

 

Yes it holds 38 gallons.. I did the real test and drove it till it was damn near empty when I first got it. Once the light comes on and says like 30 miles left. I drove it around for another day and half.. it took 36 gallons that time. So I still could have drove a few more miles.. it's 38 for sure.. cheers

Not certain if I feel better, but I am not alone.

 

So I wanted to double check this as I have run into the same thing. Last take I ran it past 0 miles until empty. I got to the point where it would not longer calculate, it just said low fuel. When I filled up I still couldn't fit any more than 30 gallons in the tank. I guess it requires 8 gallons to submerge the pump. That or Toyota is lying to all of us haha

 

If you were to totally run it out of fuel it would be 38 gallons. This is Toyota protecting their reputation on reliability by keeping that pump nice and cool. You'd be surprised how many morons there are that keep their tank under 1/4 full at all times.

 

I totally agree. I am usually a fill up at 1/2-1/4 kind of guy but wanted to calculate my mileage so figured I would see how accurate the computer was. 30 gallons calculated out to 14.88 mpg and the truck computer said 15.0. This was only the trucks second tank of gas mostly city. So I'm a assuming I will get a little more but stay in the 15 mpg range.

 

Yea, one time I went 80 miles past my display said "0 miles tell empty" and I only filled up 36.5 gallons. I get 13.5 mpg, so I should have been able to go about 20 miles more. I totally agree that this is to keep the pump nice and cool. I believe as long as you have fuel running through your pump you will be fine, but I still fill up when I'm at 1/4 of a tank.
