Is the 3.5 twin turbo and 10 spd transmission used in another Toyota/Lexus vehicle somewhere else in the world or are they a brand new entity for Toyota? Curious if they have any age on the design to be proven reliable like the 5.7 and 6spd.

    Thanks

The V35A-FTS has been used in the Lexus LS500 luxury sedan since 2017.

It's been in the Lexus LS500 going on 5yrs now and has been extremely reliable. Also, it's in the LC300 now overseas which has also been recently released. There are some fundamental changes relative to the Lexus variant and they changed part of the oiling system and I'm sure a few other things for truck/SUV duty. The same basic engine applies though. Is it as proven as a 20yr engine, absolutely not. Will it have and has already proven to provide fundamental Toyota reliability, absolutely. The ones that think Toyota doesn't know how to build a turbo engine clearly have never owned or worked on a 1JZ or 2JZ engine which are essentially the holy grail of engines to this day. The V35A is obviously much different but let's cross our fingers the aftermarket takes a hold of these some and opens up the potential.

Good info on the engine. Is the transmission completely new or is it used elsewhere too? Thanks

The Lexus LS500 uses a 10 speed automatic transmission too, but I’m not sure if it is closely related to the unit in the Tundra. We can make an educated guess that lessons learned at Aisin Transmission on the Lexus 10 speed which is 5 years into service (or close enough) have been applied to the LC300 and Tundra.

The trans is a new design, one of our customers is a supplier for some of the "hard parts"....gears, carriers, etc. It is built in the US, not imported

I suspect it must be the HD alternative and likely has differences due to the MAX configuration and higher TQ figures.

I thought I read somewhere that it's the same transmission as the RAM 1500? I could be mistaken though

Definitely not the same ZF8sp from the Rams, these are a all new 10sp similar to the Lexus LS500 which I believe was mentioned to be made by Aisin.

What does a ZF made 8 speed auto have in common with a 10 speed Aisin?

Aside from both using automatic transmission fluid.

Hope your mistaken ….after owning 3 rams in a row hopefully Toyota won’t go that low. Sharing anything from Ram would be a mistake!!!

Definitely not the same as the ZF/Ram, I worked on that project back in 2012/13. Now the Ford/GM 10 speeds are twins, that one kicked off in early '14. The 10 sp for the Tundra could very well be the Aisin design and be licensed to Toyota, that i dont know for certain but the hard parts are being made in the US... mostly in the KY, TN & WV area

Both Ram and Tundra are using Aisin, but different models (of course).

Aisin is only used in the Ram 3500 and it's still a 6sp. The ZF8 is used in just about all other light duty Ram/FCA applications (Hemi, EcoDiesel) and for what it's worth probably one of the most robust and fastest shifting AT available (I've owned two now). Frankly, if the new 10sp Aisin is even close to that then they have a winner. BMW's have the ZF8 shifting so fast most can't tell they aren't dual clutches and you can push copious amounts of power through them.

Reliable sure, but always the most functional that is debatable? Cause the numerous TSB's and horrible shift characteristics of both the Tacoma and Tundra 6sp aren't anything to write home about. Probably one of the biggest complaints overall. Just saying let's hope the Aisin 10sp is FARRRRRR better than the 6sp that's been around since the 1920's because that thing doesn't know what gear it wants to be in 80% of the time especially if you live in mountainous terrain with elevation changes.

I can confirm, the zf8 in my bmw and it’s the best transmission I’ve ever driven. So smooth and always seems to be in the right gear. I rarely know it’s shifting.

The tundra 6 speed was geared way to low in first other that that it was fine. The Tacoma's 6 speed is a sloppy reliable mess I guess is the best was to describe it. Toyota chit the bed somethin fierce with the latest gen tacoma transmission and gearing and I'm amazed they have let it go on this long. With all the heat rounds toyota has taken with the taco and tundra transmissiins the new asian direct shift 10at and gearing will be done right. I think.

Surprised your talking so highly of this tech and optimistic. I'd of thought you'd want 3 on the tree. :boink:

I can 3rd this that it’s a very smooth transmission. I had two ZF8s in my stocks M235i have to be rebuilt or repaired under 70,000 miles though. I’ll take a rougher shift if it means better reliability.

My HO cummins aisin 6 speed shifts were like hitting small speed bumps in the low gears but I dont think i could have tore that's trans up if i tried.

I know it’s a difficult balance automakers have to make between performance and durability. With BMW, when the warranty expires and it hits 50k or so miles, things will go wrong and it will be expensive. Everyone who buys/leases a BMW understands this. In my case it was a two door sports car toy, so it was an acceptable trade off. The straight 6 turbo with the ZF8 transmission is an incredible combination. Fun, but I wouldn’t want to depend on it for work or family.

That’s not a trade off I want to make in my truck. I don’t know enough about transmissions to say that it won’t work or can’t work reliably in a truck platform. Someone will probably figure it out.

This new 10 speed sucks it shifts weirdly in the lower gears my opinion higher gears you can't really tell it's shifting but my god does thing like to slip between gears my tach will climb 300-400 rpms between shifts, but sometimes it will shift like a dream I just don't get it anymore and of course when I take it to the dealer they can never replicate what I feel in the truck.
