Rear seat mod on CM

Man I wish someone would come up with a mod to fold down the backs of the rear seats. So much wasted space and I need it. I know there are some garage engineers here!

 

What would folding down the seats down, do to add storage?

Fold them up and add ESP underseat storage

 

I just deleted the back seats all together. Now I can fit up to four 40" tires in the back, or a washing machine, or even an 8 drawer dresser. even an 8 drawer dresser.

 

LOL....Going to school in Montana I once took out the passenger seat and half of the rear seat so I could fit 2 mountain bikes inside a small (non-hatchback) 80s Subaru DL sedan.

 

Kidding right?!? There is more space behind the seats than even when I add the ESP under seat storage. Perfect for rifle racks, tie downs, bug out bag, flat items, or whatever’s.

 

Given that the seat frame for the backs is fixed, you’d have to fashion some sort of hinge and latching system. The DC backs are made to hinge and move during the fold of the bottom, which is why the mod will work on them (but also why there isn’t much room back there when the seat bottom is lifted up).

Another option might be to find a set of seats from a 07-13 Crewmax and then modify your carpet/floor liner to bolt them in. The body should still have all the same mounting points, just the 14-21 have a different carpet and foam blocking under there for the different rails. The 07-13 seats will slide forward-back and the seat back folds down, but you won’t have the seat fold-UP ability any more.

 

just wishful thinking. Don’t even need them to fold all the down, just enough to reach back there.

 

And don't the seat backs have the ability (if the seat is a little forward) to recline?

 

Crap - that’s right.
The lower seat doesnt move, it’s the upper seat back that reclines in the 07-13 CM.

 

My 07 DC rear seats fold up. There is a storage bin under as well

 

You were right to begin with. See the video below at time 8:25. Has sliders. I thought maybe the seat backs could recline also but looks like I could be wrong.

Nope. I'm not seeing it as a huge deal and not a whack of space back there when I look.

I prefer them to fold up as they do. Not sure it would work both ways. I use the floor space all the time for tackle boxes, boots, etc.

It would be nice if one could adjust the incline though.

Yep. You can mod them to also fold down, but it doesn’t get you a whole lot in the DC. I kept a blanket, tow strap, and a 10/22 back there and that was about all that would fit because of how the seat back cams as the seat bottom is lifted.

OP is hoping for a similar mod on the CM

 

Ok - I’m not crazy then.
In the Gen 1 double cab, the seat back folds forward AND then you can flip the seat up (it flips forward toward the front seats). Best of both options!

Interesting. The back seating area of the Tundra is so good, the only improvement on the 2.5 gen would be the 2.0 gen rear seats for the ability to recline (think 12-20 hours straight back there). I am wondering, as was discussed in the post, if the airbags have any issue(s).

 

Where exactly are the airbags? Are there any in the actual seats? I think they are in the C-pillar, and I can’t imagine any real difference there. The cabin framing is identical from 07-21.

When I removed my seats for the ESP storage install, I don't recall any wiring going to the seats. Only to the sub and then the smart key sensor is under the carpet there too.
