HI, I have an interesting problem. I haven't ran the AC in quite a while, but I'd like to. About a month, or more, ago, when I'd shut the truck off, after about 2 or 3 minutes, I'd hear like a moaning noise coming from under the dash. Flash forward to this week, when the Temps reached the low 90's, and I turned on the AC. I can hear the blower motor spin up, but nothing comes out the vents. I wonder if the 'moaning' I'm hearing has something to do with an actuator connected to a door that is stuck closed? If that is the case, how can I get the door opened?? If its not the case, then what do you thing would cause the issue (the air not coming into the cabin)? Yes, the AC does work. The issue is with the air not coming into the cab.

    2010 Tundra Limited 4x4

    Thank you for your time.

Let's hope it is an actuator issue and not a door issue. The door is in one until, not really serviceable. The doors run off or rods that turn and twist the door with it. I had an issue with my '14 and it groaned for a while when I tried to get floor heat. After a while it just stopped working (no floor air flow). Dealer asked if there were any smells (i.e., dead mouse blocking the door) and thought I had dropped something in the unit from the defrost vents. Nope, nothing in the unit. The shaft snapped so the entire unit had to be replaced.

If your entire unit needs to be replaced it isn't pretty. See in this thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/upd...seriously-pic-hvac-core-being-replaced.70864/

See #1 below. This is for a 2010 Tundra limited.

Check your cabin Air Filter first before you tear into the system. It may be clogged with leaves and or a rat/squirrel nest.

Thanks for the info, guys. The Dealer said they wanted $1300, just to pull the dash.

You can check that and your blower by just taking the glove box out. Check the simplest things first K.I.S.S.

It took me less than 20 minutes to replace mine in my 2012. It was out of state in an Autozone parking lot

I can verify that your mechanic needs to be your ex mechanic. I had a little bit of a hard time popping off one of the wiring clips that needed to move a little to get the blower out, so I think it took me 21 minutes to replace mine a few weeks ago.

hmm, maybe i'm mistaking some terminology then. it was almost two months ago. he said it's the motor way down inside that shifts the doors (or whatever) betweeen AC & defrost.

what part was it that you two replace in 20 minutes?

One can replace the blower motor in 20-30 minutes.

The HVAC unit, that contains and controls the blend doors, is dead center on the dash down by the floor. And YES, then entire flipping dash needs to be taken out to replace that unit.

Then that’s what he said needs to be done. Was he wrong? I hear the same creaking and moaning and groaning coming from my dash every time I turn off my truck and I only get (ice cold) air through my defroster. Would that be a blower motor issue? Or the HVAC/heater unit? I would love it if it were a 20 minute fix.

Does the air blow immediately from the defroster vents when you start the truck, or is there a delay?

There’s a delay. If I start my truck with AC all the way up, coldest setting, blowing out the vents, it creaks for about 30 seconds and then starts blowing out the defroster.

I had the same problem but with my heater shortly after buying my 2007. These videos helped me fix it in less than an hour.

Its not too difficult to try this and see if your servo can be re timed. It could also be a wiring issue. If it is, they sell just the harness for the blend doors as separate from the rest of the body harness. The second video shows how all the arms and gears need to be indexed.

both of those videos show access through the center console/shifter... i have a column shifter and bench seat. i'll have to look around for some videos with my "grade" SR5.

I would think that would be a little bit easier. My 2016 was the same setup as yours before I did the center console swap. Remove the bottom center plastic piece under the stereo. In all fairness I have no experience on a second gen without the center console, although it is identical from what I can tell between second and 2.5 gen trucks.

The servo motor on my 07 stopped functioning. I was quoted 2000 to fix it. I lived with it until they gave me 20k on trade to get me into a 17.

I think my AC/heater unit has mostly given up the ghost. The defroster, which was the only function that worked, has now stopped heating up quickly. Used to be I could start my truck in the morning with the defroster on full blast and come back to a warm cab in five minutes. Now it just blows cold air until I've been driving for 5-10 minutes. And even then it'll stop and start. Looks like I'll be purchasing a whole new unit soon :/

Does the coolant come up to temp normally? It could be a thermostat issue.

I would not replace anything based on what you just said. How's your water pump?? If it's getting a little bit leaky and you've lost some coolant, you may not be getting coolant flow through the heater core and that may be your issue.

damn, i'm glad I posted. now that you mention it, i noticed the other day that my oil temp was occasionally moving all the way to H while at a stop light. and my coolant reservoir (or something?) has a leak. i fill the reservoir and the next day or two it's down to less than an inch again and there's some splatter. all started happening in the last week or two.

Yeah, don't mess with the heating system till that's resolved.

You could have a leaky water pump, a leak in the valley, or pieces of the radiator cap have broken off and have gone places they shouldn't be.

If just the overflow tank has a leak, that would be super easy.

For the other issues, you'll need to inspect your rad cap and possibly pressure test the system to see where it may be leaking.

My water pump has about 65K miles on it. If there’s no coolant flowing through the heater core will it not blow hot air?

Yes, but you would likely also notice that if you rev up the engine you may very temporarily get some heat.
