What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

All good. One solid step on the brake after you finish should get them seated better.

 

Have you checked on the condition of your carrier bearing? Possible your driveshaft is out of phase?

 

Does the truck do it in 4wd?
I know you said it’s more of a low speed vibe vs a 45-55mph vibe more common with the carrier bearing issue……

It sounds like you may be chasing the issue I have been. IF you can, try loading enough weight in the bed to drop the rear by 1/4-1/2”. If I do that all my vibes disappear. Leaving me to think it’s my slip joint

 

I just had the carrier bearing replaced and the dirveshaft balanced. That part should be good.

I'll try out 4wd tomorrow and let you know.

I'll give this a shot. I'll have to track down some weight. If it is the slip joint, what's the fix?

 

I have yet to find a fix. Shimming the carrier down helped a little, but can’t do it enough to eliminate it without causing other angle related issues.

 

Well shit. I had no issues before I started fixing things and had the new leafs intalled etc. Boo hiss.

 

You lifted? My issue started after the rear AAL. May try a 1 degree axle shim to point the diff up a tiny bit.

 

Just Bilstein 5100s up front to level out. I did go with a 4 leaf pack rather than the standard 3 leaf. I wonder if that may be the problem. If it is, I may talk to my mechanic about pulling a leaf out.

 

I'm going to swing into my mechanic tomorrow and chat with him but you'll probably know. Is it possible to remove one of the leafs from my 4 leaf pack to see if that fixes the issue? Or would I have to buy entirely new leaf packs?

 

This may be your issue then. The driveshaft may have extended to the point that the splines and shaft aren't coupled enough and are inducing vibes. Lifting/raising/extending suspensions can be tricky business.

 

Wear in the slip joint splines likely play a big part. I bet if I put a new shaft in with the carrier spacers I have the vibes would be gone

 

Yeah, the whole lifting concept is really understanding geometry and applying it beforehand (before mods) and is based on the assumption that all related components are new. Any breakdown in the process can be frustrating.

 

Best spot to get the actual scangauge from now that I have a mount?

Grab handle stays. It uses one of the mount bolts.

 

@empty_lord suppose my T100 gears are 4.30 as I suspect and will soon find out. Will they swap into my Tundra diffs? And if so, does that mean my LSD would swap into my T100? Because if so, all I need is a rear locker for the Tundra and I'll be set. My T100 revs around 3k rpm at 75mph and I'd like to see that rpm come down. Plus I'm planning headers and SC for the T100 so going to shorter gears shouldn't effect much performance on the low end. I'd rather have the taller gears in the Tundra since it's my offeoader. The T100 is going to be my street truck (even though it's 4wd too)

 

You have pictures of the scan gauge mounted and how the wire is ran? Is the scangauge worth it on these trucks?

 

They’re nice to have, ours can read tire pressure too if you set it up right!

 

Does it show individual tire pressure? What about transmissions temp?

 

There are only 4 display boxes, but yes it will pull up individual tires, even the spare, and yes it will read pan and converter temps. I usually have mine set to incoming air temp, water temp, battery voltage trans pan temp

 

Sweet I will have to put this on my list of things to get. You mention "if you set it up right" is it difficult to set up? Where do you have yours mounted at?

 

It’s only hard because I have banana fingers and the buttons are small; the tranny temp input sequence doesn’t always work with the first try or the first set of codes listed(there are like 3 or 4 variations I thought) but you just input them and then check to see if or what they are reading properly.

Well I said I was going to order the scangauge. Looking on Spiker's website I stumbled across the UltraGauge. Looking at their website it looks like they have more to offer with a bigger display that allows you to monitor more at once. Scrolling through other post on here someone said they weren't able to get trans temp reading. That comment was from 2017. Not sure if since then they have had an update that will allow you to get this info. @Darkness did a nice job of pros and cons. One that stuck out was it being left in a hot truck. I live in southeast Texas and it gets pretty damn hot. I do have ceramic tint all the way around including the windshield, not sure if that would help or not. Looking to see what you guys prefer out of the two.

I read up a bit too and decided scangauge. It wasn’t a very informed decision though.

 

This actually makes perfect sense assuming all the other related components (u-joints, bearings, fasteners) are good, which, iirc from another discussion, you said were and the angles are correct. The axle pinion wants to naturally tilt upward under acceleration (axle wrap), so with heavy enough weight to overcome the torque output (whatever it may be) the vibes disappear because the axle has enough resistance from the weight to prevent it from tilting upward. That slip joint is suspect for sure.

 

hey , so just got my durobumps in the mail with no instructions included .. just want to make sure/ compare with ya-our 1 gen Tundra version durobumps are interchangeable L and R correct, they don’t have any taper to them, and no “notch” in the base plate to position outward to wheel- like I see mentioned on the durobumps site under installations for other models like Tacoma? Thanks!

 

@empty_lord , have you looked into a carrier bearing drop kit/spacer to try and bring the drive shafts more in line? The kit costs about $50 in Canuckistani pesos. I'm thinking I may try that before having my mechanic either remove leafs or put those leaf spring shims in.
