I mean, OK but the battery I bought is 75 lbs. The sheet metal is not thick, I fully agree. However with a metal (not plastic) plate on the bottom to re-inforce and distribute load, is there a significant vulnerability over a 27 at 55-70 lbs? You honestly, seriously, legitimately think that < 20 extra pounds just pushes this whole thing over the edge?

 

Depending on how hard you push the truck, yes actually. I’m not saying it’ll happen overnight, BUT it will eventually happen. Even with a 27f of these trucks are ridden hard enough cracking will happen (it’s an issue on all Toyota trucks, the battery supports are all very similar). Ultimately how hard do you plan on pushing the truck offroad? A metal tray doesn’t do much for supporting the apron.


The damage you’ll likely find will be around the radiator support.

 

I'll take a closer look at that portion.

There already was a small impact on the driver front side, some minor paint cracking in what I think might be the portion of steel supporting the radiator.

Aluminum radiator will help or hurt? Maybe hurt due to additional weight?

I think it's safe to say that my offroading will be somewhere between pathetic and nonexistent in both trucks?

 

Radiator won’t hurt because of how it’s supported. The battery just lends to be an issue because it’s supported on one side. Then hanging over the other. If off-roading isnt a big goal (especially driving lots of washboard like terrains) then go for it.

 

I will say though, the 3rd gen Tacoma will be FAR more susceptible to the cracking than the tundra. I’ve seen countless trucks at work with radiator core support cracking on those (and 2nd gens)

 

Yeah, my thought is maybe I don’t do a steel front bumper because the nose is so damn heavy anyway. Add a bit with the battery and radiator and maybe a compressor. Sliders and rear bumper at least are aft of front axle.

Wouldn't that be the way to go though? Battery supported by the frame directly? Too nuts to even consider? Or maybe a safety issue somehow?

 

if you relocated the battery to the back somewhere with a battery box then yes. that would be ideal. But now your running wire all the way to the back. theres no where to mount a battery up front off the frame

 

Now we're talking. Between the frame rails and behind the cab, where the AC meat would sit? Is there a lot of crap in the way there? Maybe opposite the tank for offsetting?

If doing the big 3 with 0/2 then who really cares how long, right?

Maybe an aux battery post to the stock location for disconnecting...

 

look around the truck. im sure theres options. if wanting to balance weight a bit better youd do it opposite of the gas tank.

The area behind the cab directly below the bed should be an empty spot. Fair warning though, if you do this invest in rock sliders. And make the box is ABOVE the sliders. Last time you want to do is knock the whole battery off the truck

I've been impressed with Wal-Mart lately. Yesterday I placed an order for some oil and Seafoam and they had it on my porch within 6 or so hours.
Also, if anyone uses 0W-20 for any of their other vehicles, Wal-Mart has Mobile 1 marked down to $3.71/quart.

i dont know what kinda outfit has brakes that only last 15 years, but i was at speed, downhill, and heading for a corner. Believe me, i didnt grab that brake lever for show.

i come down the hill, inside knee out, sitting on the outside cheek. being the evening, after the angry laser orb has assulted everyones senses, theres unleashed dog walkers, and i would gladly bail to save dogs, but i didnt have to, when the golden retriever and i locked eyes he gave me a high five. But im downhill twisting right and my left is coming up quick. I lean in like im on rossi’s ducati with the faith reserved to the ignorant. A god. A force stuck the 8” tires, of which all of my everything is supported by the rear axle, to the ground. I had a moment of slow motion realization of a form of acceptence and respect for the world. But then i remembered than humans are trash, because of the construction site. The magic of the moment was gone. My brake was still broken and i made it through the corner.

those people wont know why i have a shit attitude towards them, but the literal ‘becoming’ of them and their house robbed me of greatness, and i wont forgive that.

I think im gonna try to fit discs. I can step up to 10”tires with a longer chain, and the chain is due. But it does 46mph in full attack mode, and the clutch sorta locks in at 20mph+ and provides a little engine braking.

i can fit cast scooter wheels. Get some round top tires while im at it.

 

So, while a new battery brings me some peace of mind and was probably needed, replacing it didn't eliminate the slight, maybe 2 second delay in ignition that wasn't present until recently. Going to replace the fuel filter which I'm pretty sure is the original w/188-189k on it and check fuel pressure at the rail to verify it's in spec. Depending on what the outcome of verification is I may have to replace the fuel pump and screen or the coils, which I wouldn't doubt are also the originals or maybe both. Who knows? Runs like a champ, just don't like the uneasy feeling I get knowing the delay wasn't there until recently.

Edit: Also going to check the grounds and make sure they're not on painted surfaces and loose.
