BULLY DOG OR PEDAL COMMANDER?

just installed the Carven Cat-Back exhaust kit on my ‘17 SR5 TRD Off-Road, and i’m loving the sound. perfect rumble, not too much noise in the cabin and just perfect so i won’t wake the neighbors in the AM. now it just feels like i make more noise than i move. looking for a recommendation... i’m in between the Bully Dog tuner or the Pedal Commander. or does anyone have another suggestion as to how to get more go? thank you beforehand

 

2 very different products. What is your actual goal? If you are just wanting a throttle controller (pedal commander) do a search and you will see there are other devices for a lot less that do the same if not more.
If you are wanting to retune your truck, I've heard good things about Bully Dog as well as D.A.P tuning.

 

excuse my ignorance, would you be able to explain the difference in outcome between the bully dog and pedal commander.

 

So the pedal commander is just a throttle controller. It only changes your throttle responsiveness. I have a different throttle controller and it makes a significant difference and allows you to tailor the responsiveness of your pedal to your driving style and road conditions.
The Bully Dog and other tuners actual retune your vehicle and can change shift points and do other things depending your route. Tuners can also actually increase hp while the throttle controller is only changing responsiveness.
There is also normally a pretty significant difference between the 2. Throttle controllers are around 200-300 while tuning is 500 and up. Just depends what you are wanting for your end result.

If you search iDrive or HikeIt, there are a few threads about both of those throttle controls. Both are smaller and cost less than the Pedal Commander but are recommended by members on here.

 

yes, of course. makes sense that the tune would change shift points etc. have you personally tried any of these products? the bully dog or the other pedal controls? is the tune more risk as to damage or wear and tear to the truck?

I have the iDrive and am very happy with it. For me, its doing exactly what I want and was very affordable. I do not believe a reputable company that performs tunes will adversely affect your truck but I cannot say for certain.
It also depends what you plan to do with your truck. If you are planing a big lift to fit massive tires, a re-gear and tune would be more beneficial than a re-gear and throttle controller. My truck is stock suspension wise an I only plan to do a small lift in the future, so for me the throttle controller fits my needs now and in the future.

i have a 1.75” Rough Country Leveling Kit and 275/70/18 GoodYear DuraTrac AT. as soon as i got the tires in i did feel like i’m not moving as fast and or my throttle response is less. that’s why i’m looking for something to get moving more. any recommendations?

i’m thinking the tuner sounds good, although i did meet someone who is selling the Pedal Commander for $200

 

Is that your end goal for lift? If so, a throttle control should get you back to being responsive. If your planning a 6" lift to run 35's, a tune would be better.
You can always try that pedal commander and if you don't like the results. You can sell it again and probably make up most of your cost.

 

Use the Tow/Haul button. It's free and helps the truck come back to life after larger tires. I personally don't think a re-gear would worth the cost for those size of tires but that's just my opinion.

You want more gooo then get a super charger. If not just push tow haul button save your money

 

I've got both running on my truck currently. I first installed the bullydog gt tuner, it is set to performance tune with the sport shift setting. It did make a difference in the overall drive of the truck. It didn't make a huge difference in the acceleration at take off but it definitely firmed up my shift points and you sail all the way through the gears much smoother then stock. Just recently installed the pedal commander and got the acceleration at take off that was missing from the bullydog. Set to max which is sport+ with adjuster set to +4 this truck gets scary fast. I'm not even comfortable hitting the gas when making a turn because I'm afraid the truck will slide the back end out. I've found my perfect setting to be sport mode with adjuster set at zero which is the middle adjustment on each setting. If this sounds confusing PM me and I can shoot you my number and maybe explain it better over the phone. Both devices tuned it my truck feels like a track car and when my DD exhaust comes in, it'll sound like one too.

I have the Bully Dog BDX, the portable one where you tune it and then leave the tuner at the house. I like it very much and think it makes a big difference in performance. I'm running 295/70R18 ATIII tires and have plenty of get go. Got mine from Keith @dirtydeeds

 

Same here. If you get the bullydog, get it from @dirtydeeds they have great customer service and Keith will recommend the best setup for your use.

 

what’s the difference between the BDX and the GT?

 

BDX you plug in to tune then disconnect and store until you need it again. The GT works the exact same way but can also function as a monitor to display readings it's getting from the OBD, very similar to a scan gauge. If you look at my picture above you can see the readings it's putting out while driving.

I would run both. The Bullydog tubes power. Responsiveness. Transmission. Throttle pedal. But the definition of tuning of gas pedal is very low compared to pedal commander.

pedal commander has al let endless options for how your gas pedal feels.

put Bullydog on full kill or ‘premium’ and pedal commander on full kill. Your truck gets gnarly.

then turn it all back down for your Monday commute.

I’m debating running this same setup, already have the pedal commander just trying to see if the bullydog tuner is worth the cost and if anyone has one installed on a 2018

 

I think Bullydog is only compatible up to the 2017 models.

 

I have read that as well, not sure what changed between 2017 model and the 2018 or if it just hasn’t been tested for there warranty to support it. I’m sure someone on here has tried one on a 2018 or newer

Why not get the bully dog tune and the bully dog pedal thing? They have a smarter design for their pedal thing than pedal commander does.

 

I’m waiting for Keith from DD exhaust systems to chime in. Guy is a tundra wizard. I picked up my 10in standard system from him, dude knows his stuff.

I believe you're talking about the banks one. It's similar but I prefer the pedal commander because I keep it tucked away. The banks is meant to be installed visible and i didn't want another gauge on my truck that I'll never look at.
