"Breaking in period" on new truck engine/trans/transfer/diff?

I would really like to know what "extremely high speeds" are? Like why make such a a vague suggestion.

To the OP, just keep avoid full throttle for the first 1k miles, don't do any long distances on cruise, and don't get on the throttle to much when its cold.

As far as the oil change, leave the factory fill in till ~5k and then change to whatever you plan to run. These engines are machined so well you hardly find any glitter or anything in the oil after break-in, speaking from experience on my own truck. You can also do the differential oil at 5k, that will have lots of metal bits in it by then.

True and I get that, but why not just list a specific speed. Some other manufacturers say keep it under 85 or 100 during break in.

 

I think it is likely because they seem to use the same wording in nearly every toyota owners manual. Just looked at Corolla and it says the same thing. Supra says 100 mph but that is likely BMW wording. It is just generic "lawyer" type language anyhow and surely not written by engineers since each vehicle may have different gearing, tire size etc. and they are basically just trying to limit time at high revs. I hit VIR in my supra for a track weekend before 1,000 miles and 140 mph 2x per lap for a full weekend didn't cause anything to blow up!

 

I would venture to say you did no measurable harm. Think of how many company/fleet trucks that get loaded down or hooked to a trailer straight off the dealer’s lot.

 

That sucks, waiting for mine felt like an eternity, many of us know the feeling.

 

I know my 4.7 is 5-30 and I have only seen that weight in Syn. I have done the 5k oil change and im at 260k drove it of the lot and home 2hrs with 7 miles on it. A week later the wife and I drove it to Yellowstone Im sure the people know better than me but its still running I think they put that in the book to cover there A## , the wife has a BMW and the manual says 15k to 6 months fro oil change
so thats what I do and its got 170k with only 1 problem a leaking oil feed line to the turbo that was covered under warrant

Off Topic: @AGuyFromNC ---> I was just in Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill North Carolina a few weeks ago for the first time. Being from Iowa, could not believe the beautiful trees everywhere. Iowa only has trees in select areas, forest preserves, homesteads, etc, otherwise farm fields EVERYWHERE for the most part. It was a forest lover's dream to be in that area. Love the whole state.

Here’s what I do.

500 miles I do an oil and filter change. Use Toyota 0w20.
2500 miles I do an oil and filter change. Use Toyota 0w20
5000 miles the dealer does a ToyotaCare change.
5000 miles I change the fluids in the diffs and transfer case.

10k-until my free ToyotaCare service is over. Is done at the dealer.

After Toyota I start doing them myself.

My nearest Toyota dealer is 45 miles away so I usually don’t stick with dealer stuff after that.

 

I laugh when people say, "just follow the 10,000 mile schedule". There are "Special Operating Conditions" which Toyota recommends you change the oil and filter every 5k or 6 months.

BTW, if using a car-top carrier warrant's changing the oil at 5k, oversized tires do too.

 

Its just the nature of breaking in differentials. You have hypoid gears and the spider/side gears within the differential all wearing into each other. This generates a good amount of glitter in the oil, also if there are any burrs or other little bits of material that get broken off. The differential is not finished at the factory the way that the engines/transmissions are.

It's not necessary to change as the magnet will catch a fair bit of it, but this thread isn't really about what is necessary.

Off-topic a bit (not your engine), but change your rear diff fluid in the first 1000k to a good synthetic, easy and cheap. Tell me that what you see coming out doesn't look dirty and the magnet will have a good pile of stuff on it. The front diff and transfer case are probably fine for a while. Cheap insurance if you plan on keeping it a long time. If you trade your vehicles within 2-5 years don't do a thing.

I'm a bit OCD about using good fluids in a vehicle I'm going to keep for 10 years + hopefully.

 

Don’t see any point changing oil so early, all the mil mile tundra is work trucks and they only follow Toyota service intervals.

 

NC is definitely a beautiful state. Great beaches on one end and gorgeous Smoky Mountains on the other. I’m near Charlotte so 3 hrs and I can be at either.

 

This has actually changed. There was a special note on my last Toyota care interval ticket that the oil for Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra should be changed every 5k miles. They have changed mine for the last 2 Toyota care stops.

 

Can you please post a reference or a copy? I haven't seen anything like that.

 

The maintenance manual in my 2021 still states 10k/12 months for normal operating conditions. My 2020 Tacoma said the same thing.

 

I think the 5k interval is only for the older flex fuel engines. The interval is 2.5k (or three months) if you actually use E85 in the truck.

Sounds like a compelling reason to stay away from E85.

I've been using Amsoil severe gear

$39 75w-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75w-90 for a long time in my differentials, never a problem, still clear after long intervals. I should be careful saying 'long', I change my diff fluids way before the 'long' recommended drain intervals. Still never an issue, clear when it drains, not a black smelly glitter-filled milkshake.
Also have used Redline for my diffs once, read good things. I plan on going with Redline in my transfer case as they list their product compatible with the whole 75W shite storm.

 

Hmmm, the wording is interesting and maybe it was a mistake it was changed again. This wasn't on my 2 previous receipts. Oil was changed on the 2nd and 3rd Toyota care intervals based on date not mileage, which was 4100 and 7700 respectively. Others here (why I enjoy the board) indicated it could possibly be indicating a certain engine configuration. Anyway attachment included.

 

I'll have to go back and check mine. I'm almost to my 25k and would be glad to get another freebie oil change here at the end of the intro services.
