Smoking on startup and smell of gas

Do a compression test with engine cold and while at it have plugs tested or just change them out depending on mileage.

 

I'm not scared of using seafoam. I'll give this a shot first, thanks a bunch.

 

right around 145k and I'd bet my life that the sparkplugs are original.

 

Starts up easily, runs great.

 

To stop the all the guessing just do a plug reading and that will answer the questions

 

Just look at your evidence:

1) Gassy smell

2) White smoke that disappears

It's not oil.

Verify the problem.

I would get those plugs out too.

 

One more little caveat to consider.
If (and that's a Big If) the fuel injector(s) are leaking at shut down you could be subjecting yourself to a 'liquid/hydraulic lock' of at least one cylinder.
Happened years ago on my compadre's Big Block Chevy where the carburetor was dumping raw fuel into the engine at shut down.
He came back later and tried to restart the engine ~ no dice ~ the cylinder had enough raw fuel inside to stop the engine from turning any further.
Remember, liquid does not compress.
The result ? A severely bent connecting rod. He got lucky and R&R'ed the bad rod with a new one ~ problem solved.

He worked for Consolidated Vultee during WW II getting aircraft ready to be sold to the military.

Simple and quick to DIY, and will tell you what's going on... or at least be a good first step. Keep track of which plug is from which cylinder to aid in the diagnoisis and post back with pics.

 

This sounds very similar to what my truck has been doing. However if mine has been sitting multiple days it doesn't seem to smoke nearly as much or at all. I replaced my PCV valve recently and have only had it happen once since then. The PCV valve definitely was clogged full of gunk and needed replaced. But it usually does it the most when it has been sitting for just a couple hours, and I believe that was the case that time. Interested to hear what you find out.

 

Oil looked perfect, coolant level is good. I have added a bottle of seafoam to a less than half-full gas tank. Going to see if that knocks anything loose. I'll replace PCV valve this weekend just for good measure, I'm pretty sure it hasn't been done before.

 

I do plan on doing this too, maybe when I do the PCV. Thank you.
