What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Anybody ever stumbled upon this supercharger? Seems for $7683 USD we can have a vvti supercharger that's got a water cooled heat exchanger. Super spendy, bit neat none the less. I wonder if anyone has tried it. That or try the URD vvti kit for the gx470 and 4tj gen 4runner for like $5k

Well, it would appear I have a warped brake rotor. What's the consensus on brake rotors for our trucks? Worth getting slotted? Raybestos, Centric, PowerStop, StopTech? Should I get new calipers while I'm at it?

I'll eventually be towing a 2000lb boat so I want to prep for that.

I've had good luck with Centric over the last 10 years, but the last set on the tundra warped in about a year. I had lifted the truck but didn't do the extender on the proportioning valve though so that could have been what caused it. I just ordered new centric rotors for the sequoia.

 

I'd love to do that! Makes absolutely no financial sense and would probably be cheaper to find a way to put a 5.7 in, but something about supercharging a truck makes me want to spend money I don't have.

 

Billy 4600 shocks and spring compressor came in today. Front shock boxes looked like they have water damage, but the shocks themselves appear okay.

 

Will you let me know what you think of the spring compressor? I've been eying a few on Amazon.

 

Sure. I won’t be doing the shocks until Labor Day week since I have that week off. I’ll post my experience with them.

 

So what's the deal with the sway bar links I see people installing? Is it for better articulation off road without having to just remove the sway bar all together or what? I want to remove mine, but if this is just as good of an option since I do ~90% highway driving, I'm intrigued.

 

I’ve had my bar off for almost a year, probably 7-10% highway if I’m lucky. But even on the highway it’s not frightening at all.
Remove one link and see how you like it.

 

Could someone give me a good reason to not buy some WeatherTech floor liners? My OEM rubber mats have holes in them, they've served well for 20 years. I think my buddy has the original, unused, carpeted mats so maybe that's the answer for the next decade? I just really like the feel of rubbers on my feets...

Also, @shifty` could you please remind me what the reverse trigger on the Gentex mirror is all about? I will commence my RTFM right now b/c I should have done my homework before class.

Did my homework, reverse disables auto dimming if I'm understanding correctly. I might try tapping into the harness feeding the trailer and/or tracing where that pulls from but I think it may tap at the taillight, not sure yet.

@empty_lord any thoughts on lift vs no lift for a rig that does a bit of towing? I think the 7200 lb limit is halfway decent for a non-dually bumper pull (I think it has a Curt class 3 right now which means 8k max?) but a lift maybe screws with that plan? So you can either tow or wheel but ideally not both? And if you're going for a street rig doing tow duty then best to keep it stock height and E street tires?

My bro in law has all sorts of real trucks and routinely tows horses so the thought of being able to use the Tundra to assist with a 3 horse trailer has some appeal. That and we closed on the investment property sale this week so the chances of buying a place in the PNW have increased and then maybe, just maybe we'd get a horse for the wife and one for the boys. Granted I don't know of anyone who owns a 3 horse trailer at the moment but I guess the question is, how ridiculous would it be to attempt to pull a 3 horse trailer with a RCLB 1st gen? Seems like with only 2 horses inside it'd be under 7200 lbs, say 3k for the trailer and 2k for each horse.

 

If you don’t care about the dead pedal area not having complete coverage (only come up 1/2 way) then go for it, otherwise get Husky liners instead.

So I actually prefer the husky in my 4runner over the weather tech in the Best Gen. the huskies have a better bowl to catch stuff I think.

 

Those certainly look like them. I haven’t gotten them myself because I still use the OEM mats and just flip them, but I have heard good things from others about them.

 

I have the Suspension Maxx links and they're about two inches longer than OEM. They are much more stout with solid components. Yes, they do allow for more travel and keep the suspension from binding as much. After I first lifted my truck I snapped both of my OEMs offroad, and then tried two different auto parts store brands, snapping one of each. These haven't snapped after almost three years of off-road centered driving.

Mine seem to work themselves loose which isn't too big of a deal, but getting a wrench on the lower bolt head is a pain. I have a narrow stubby wrench, others cut the metal around the lower link mount off.

I'd like to take them off more often, maybe if I get some limit straps. Ever since I had a shock separate in two on the truck, I'm weary of overextending shocks.

 

I tow with a lift.. I just made sure to have some rake.

 

Got a black airbag finally thanks to a friend.

 

I've got mid travel kings and SPC UCAs so I figure I'm limiting my travel with the factory away bar. Not sure if it limits both up and down travel or what

 

Do they inflate faster?

I have had the Z36 kit including calipers for over two years now and I don't have any complaints, so far I like them a lot. Haven't done any towing with them so I can't comment on that aspect, but they work for me carrying weight and off-roading.

No shudders so far. For a while, my truck seemed to suffer (at least intermittently) from the shuddering braking/ warped rotors we get and it hasn't come back.

That's a gnarly index toe. If I ever have a brake upgrade itch again I'll do that Stoptech 6 piston caliper that clears 16" wheels.

 

Hahaha I thought index toe was some sort of brake disc term until I saw it!

 

Thanks for the brake rotor advice everyone. It's been noted and I'll look into OEM first to get a price comparison.

True story, dumbass me thought when I ordered a BBK and a package with calipers and lines arrived that I was good to go. Totally forgot about the dinner plates.

Box was destroyed too. Hope they aren’t pre-warped.

 

I wonder if I should be concerned about the top of the rear shock shaft not being polished? I’ll have to contact Bilstein and see if it makes any difference like if it’ll rust quicker or not.

Yep. You got it. Say a bright light is behind you while backing up. Do you really want auto-dimming to kick in while you're trying to use your mirror to see what's behind you? That's the purpose of the reverse wire. Some Gentex mirrors with built-in reverse camera LCD use it to turn the LCD on.

 

Thanks. I’m thinking potentially limited value with 2 layers of tinted glass but haven’t really paid attention to auto dimming in the Taco much either. I mostly use backup camera and side mirrors because shells limit the rear view usefulness.

Which reminds me I need to look into cameras at some point.
