The design flaw is with Toyota and the FIPG application process. Not enough is applied by the assembly robot toward the rear of the engine, leading to the leak. I was just using Nissan as another example of a design flaw.

Anyway, I don't know what percentage people consider "rare" or "uncommon", but let's just assume, for illustration, that 25% of all Tundras have this issue (I would consider 25% not to be rare). For any three Tundras, the chance that all three have the leak would be about 1.6%. For any two Tundras, like in my case, the chance that both have the leak would be 6.25%. All I'm trying to illustrate is that even with a 25% chance of leak, the odds that any number of trucks all have it are pretty small. As the actual rate of the issue goes down, the odds become significantly smaller.

So, either I have very bad luck, or this issue is much more widespread than people think.

I have a 13 with the 4.6l (155k) and it’s leaking on the drivers side. It’s not loosing a lot of oil so I’m just going to leave it for now and keep an eye on it and hope it doesn’t get worse.

So for two oil changes in a row, at around half service interval (5000 miles), I have noticed that the oil level on the dipstick is down half way from full. So far I have not seen any leaks but to be honest I have not looked very hard. Could a truck with a little over 15,000 be burning oil? Never had this happen on my 2008.

If you look at the above post on the number of Tundra’s built for any given year as well as the number of Forum members posting an actual leak it seems that 25% seems high? I can’t find the number of forum members on Tundras.com as that would be a good indicator as well. When you do a Google search for the cam tower leaking it brings you here to this thread with very few others. Again perhaps it’s too much optimism or wishful thinking on my part but I still think it’s not as widespread. The fact Toyota has resigned themselves to fixing these knowing full well it’s a possible robotic issue is an indicator too. I don’t believe they are sitting in the Corporate office thinking roll the dice by fixing a few while under warranty hoping most don’t leak until warranty expires. But again, perhaps my optimism is creeping in again…..

This may not be a permanent fix but applied a small amount of permatex ultra gray RTV sealant to the area of the torn FIPG and possible leak. Time will tell. Better than an engine tear down if it works for peace of mind.

Yes, most vehicles will burn oil to some extent. You generally won't notice unless you're specifically looking for it. The allowable amount is sometimes outlined in the owners manual. The Tundra seems to not specify how much, but just that it will burn some.

Has anyone here signed up for the class action investigation from the link on page 86? I’m considering signing it.

Last time I did that it was concerning a banks bad practice of applying late fees incorrectly, I got a check for $0.86 and a team of lawyers got millions.

If I was to sign up for this class action investigation, it wouldn’t be to get money. It would be to try and get Toyota to take care of this problem.

Ship has sailed on the 5.7 cam shaft leak class action. That Toyota is smart.

Took my 18’ back to the dealer in November of last year for the cam tower oil leak again. Driver’s side had clearly been leaking including a drop on the heat shield. This time, the dealer cleaned up the oil and added dye with instructions to come back in 500 – 1000 miles. Well, during COVID, this would take months due to little driving and short trips. It’s now 8 months later and I have over a few thousand miles travelled.

I bought a UV light to see if I could confirm the leak before scheduling a follow-up appointment. I could find no evidence of dye when viewing the cam tower seal with a UV light. Is there any point in returning to the dealer based on my findings? I find it hard to believe it just stopped leaking.

I have been paranoid of this common leak ever since I noticed this forum for cam tower leaks. I went to the dealer as well and they stated no leak; However, the driver side appears a little wet in the area of the FIPG. The passenger side is bone dry so obviously it is something. I just spray some dawn dishwashing soap on it and rinsed off the existing sign of any moister and will monitor it. It sucks for sure that we even have to worry about such a minuscule thing such as sealant that should hold up in this area. I personally would not prefer they open up my engine to do this procedure. It may cause more issues later. Fingers crossed.

This includes Gen 1, people who don’t have a tundra, and people who sign up but are never seen again. It’s at the bottom of the main page. 60,785 as of now.

Thank you and in an effort to be optimistic that’s a large number as compared to folks indicating they actually have a leak. I’ll continue to hope most all of us dodge a bullet.

Just had both sides resealed a month ago and truck runs great. However have noticed a fuel economy drop. Anyone else experience this after reseal? I’m even trying to baby it now for max mpg and it’s still about - 2-3mpg drop from pre repair.

Is that hand calculated or going by what the truck says? If the truck, try to unplug your battery for 15 min to reset it.

If a dealer offers warranty on engine (Covering all lubricated parts) would that cover any future issues with a cam tower leak?

It should, but some stories of dealers experiences seem to be hit or miss. Read the fine print and be prepared to show that if you ever have an issue. I’ve always had good experiences with dealers and haven’t had issues even with modifications to my truck.

If it excludes seals and gaskets would they likely not cover a leak? Is the leak only a seal deterioration/install issue or is it part of a mechanical problem within?

That might come down to how much the dealer wants to work with you. That could exclude it, but you could show how it’s not an uncommon issue. The leak seems to be from the sealant they use at the factory and the machine not applying enough or applying it correctly.

Is yours leaking? How bad is it?

due to purchase a ‘17 tomorrow, passed a 172 (Ford) inspection, they offer the free lifetime warranty on the engine as a purchase incentive, so just wanted to know if I’ll be covered if something occurs in the future. Truck has 53k on it.

Make sure you read the fine print. Those dealer warranties have stipulations like all maintenance done there and if you miss one they could say it’s void. Dealer where I bought my truck had that but I’ve moved since then. I couldn’t go back now and claim anything.

I love Toyota but I may be finished with Tundra. I currently own 3 . 2012 Tundra (and its leaking 89000 miles), 2017 highlander and a 2017 corolla. I have owned a 4 runner, Sienna van, 2008 tundra, another Highlander and a scion XB. I think I'm missing a couple but you get the picture, i like Toyota but I'm tired of the BS. My other Tundra had a wheel seal go out at less than 100,000 miles Cost over $1,000 to get that fixed. The brakes are good for only 30 to 40K. I think I will have to change models or I'm looking hard a a Subaru Forrester. I'm sure Toyota doesn't read these forums or really care. It would be nice to see someone reach out to me and give a crap. Anyone interested in a 2012 crew max with 89,000????? What is it worth today?

My wife’s 2014 traverse was almost undriveable at 80k and it would have nearly half the value of the car to fix. On top of that, the value of the car was nearly halved overnight when they released the new model. I’ll stick with Toyota for now. She chose an X3, so we’ll see how that goes.

Good luck with that Forrester lol. My brother claimed they were reliable and bought 2 and now one is used as a parts car to keep the other going. Trash cans they are.

An old coworker has a friend that specializes in Subaru repair and he will not own one. This Subaru mechanic claims that they are engineered to fail; his words. I only knew about the timing belt issues but, apparently, there is much more.
