Unfortunately that's how a lot of people think nowadays. Can I make that payment, not how much am I actually paying. They figure out monthly payment, people think they got a good deal because their payment is low and don't even think about the fact you just paid full price, they just stuck it into an 8 year loan.

Another approach when they ask that question could be to tell them you might pay cash or you might finance depending on the terms.

I've been in dealerships that do this same tactic, won't back down from it, and every salesman kiosk has a customer and salesman signing a deal. I think it's a tactic that works well enough that they don't appreciate the few deal-savvy people who come in talking about actual sales price

If Toyota doesn't release more info soon this thread will turn into another transmission cooler debate.

It doesn’t matter what the new Tundra does or doesn’t do, there will still be people here bitching about something. It’s inevitable.

Nah, when the transmission overheats it will spray transmission fluid all over the frame preventing rust. It’s a feature not a problem!

How is MSRP imaginary? And the way I understand is that no dealer pays the same invoice because of kick backs and such on the models they sell the most.

And the only reason why I ask is because I have every one and their mother tell me I need to shop off invoice when buying my cars. I have used the same dealer for many years and I have had many other dealerships balk at the price I was given (usually 2 to 3 grand off MSRP). No one has ever beat the price and I ZERO clue as to what the invoice was on any of them…

In my opinion, the primary advantage of talking OTD price is when you're pitting dealerships against each other on price (using the method one member here recommends). If you just talk sales price, you may not be comparing apples to apples depending on what fees each dealer tacks on. In one week, I talked to three dealers that each had "the lowest document fees in the province"; one was $200, one was $500 and one was $800 (and yes, this was all in the same province).

The dealer told me they get the truck for less than the invoice price after volume rebates. I'm no whiz bang new car negotiator, but they sold it to me for slightly under their invoice price if I recall correctly.

In my opinion honestly I feel OTD is flawed though. The price of the vehicle plus any dealer fees is the most important price, I feel (the price that should be negotiated). I paid more sales tax and state registration fees financing 12k than a buddy who lives in the south that financed over 30k. Hence why OTD is state and amount financed dependent…not a good comparison.

OTD excludes tax. You pay that at the county courthouse later. Never finance taxes.

I guess I'm unlikely enough to go to another province to buy that I don't think it would make a difference.

I agree about not financing the taxes but that has always been included in my purchases. I would always pay the taxes in cash but I have never paid them at a later date unless it was a private sale. I always assumed OTD was the final price of the vehicle + dealer fees + tags/registration + state tax. My bad…

I tried doing that when I bought mine, talked to 3 different dealers and not a single one would talk price over email. They all just said come in and we'll talk numbers. Wouldn't deal at all over the internet.

OTD is what must be paid to get "out the door" and because taxes and registration have a grace period they are excluded. That way OTD prices can be compared across state or county boundaries that might have different tax rates.

If taxes were included and you compared the OTD price from a California purchase to a Wyoming purchase you can wildly swing who got a better deal by including or excluding the taxes and tags. If I hot my truck for 40K pre tax in WY and somebody else got the same truck for 39K pre taxin CA, then the CA guy got a better deal. If you count tax in the OTD high tax states look like their dealers never cut deals.

No I completely understand what your saying. In all honesty I always though it is what you explained but seen it explained other ways making it confusing. And I have never not seen sales tax on any brand new vehicle I bought. It’s always there in writing with the vehicle price, dealer fee. Maybe that’s a state thing as well?

Depends on the state I think. Neither permanent state of residence I’ve lived in has stated sales tax rate or amount due on the purchase agreement.

It has to be state dependent. I pay tax at the State Tag Agency a month or so after purchase for new or used. It's never discussed during the negotiation.

Sure, you can have it written up on the paper, and if you're buying in your home town it's convenient. If I were to go to New York to buy a car, I do not have to pay NY any taxes. I bring it home and pay here. That's why when offing a price for comparison you use OTD and it excluded taxes and tags. Dealer fees are included because you have to pay those, but you can leave the lot without paying taxes and tags.

will be coming from a 14' JKU Rubicon. Was initially looking at the GX460 but the new Tundra TRD Pro has my attention. Small family of 3 plus a dog makes a P/U a good option. will probably want to tastefully mod it as I did with my Jeep. The Grille is a little ridiculous but if the performance is there then I can live with it or block it with a bumper/winch.

I always threaten to mod my vehicles but almost never do. My goal these days is to buy a vehicle that has what I want already on it, or as close as I can get.
