The only problem with that is that you can't use that higher payload without bracing it up...lol

Seems like it would be a nice feature to have, certainly have liked it on our 4th Gen 4Runners and this Sequoia. Technically, the Toyota Torsen Center Diff is full-time 4WD, not AWD, because it uses a transfer case with 4LO, has Center Diff Lock, technically different than AWD. On this '19 Sequoia the selector has three settings - 2WD, 4HI, 4LO. 4HI is actually full-time 4WD and there's a CDL button that can be engaged at any speed to lock the Torsen and then it's just like a Tundra's 4HI. 4th G 4Runner V8's don't even have a 2WD selection, are always in full-time 4HI w/CDL button, or 4LO. Those 4thG V8's go a lot of miles and never in RWD.

Not sure why the Seq, LC and 4Runner had it for many trouble-free years and carried through different generations but not for the Tacoma and Tundra.

I don’t understand, how is it possible to have a full time 4wd with 2wd drive mode

It’s only full time 4WD in the sense that you can leave it in AUTO4WD forever . It puts power to the rear wheels until it senses wheel slip then it automatically engages 4WD . It’s not actually running 4WD all the time .

My Tacoma with a composite bed had more payload than my Tundra does. A Tacoma's payload can be almost 1700 lbs.

That's the way the 1/2 ton market has and is going to. 3/4 ton truck if you want to do truck things.

I hope they put some real springs on the sr and SR5, or in their tow package

Yes, I would agree the the 1/2 ton market is much “softer” than it was 30 years ago but what isn’t any 1/2 ton capable of as a truck? They can tow quite a load, carry 1000 pounds or more (1/2 ton), and do some off-roading. The market has change therefore the manufacturers have to keep up (by making them DD friendly). The other point that is rarely mentioned is look at the size any weight of the “toys” we haul and or tow. Everything from travel trailers, ATVs/UTVs, and hell even mountain bikes are significantly bigger and heavier than years ago. This I feel isn’t any manufacturers fault or problem…

    It’s always been the case.

A 1/2 ton today has as much power, and capacity short of payload that a 3/4 ton did 15-20 years ago. Trucks keep getting bigger and more capable, but even 20 years ago if you were towing and hauling frequently a 1/2 ton wasn’t the ideal tool for the job. It’s still not the ideal tool for that job, but some guys who are really brand loyal to Toyota don’t seem to be able to accept it.

Ford, GM, and Ram fans don’t spend any time lamenting the capabilities of the 1/2 tons offered by their brand of choice. They understand they’re basically made for daily use unladen or lightly loaded, with occasional use for heavier tasks or heavier trailer towing. Not a tough concept, and easier to accept when your brand of choice offers bigger trucks if you need more capability. If an F-150 owner decides he and the wife want a bigger camper for their growing family, he can go out and buy a nice F-250/350/450 depending on his budget and needs. He spends no time lamenting the fact his smaller truck is small, assuming he has the means to get a new truck.

Toyota faithful, unfortunately are not given room to grow within Toyota truck offerings. So we see a lot of members here going to lengths to increase the payload of their Tundra 1/2 ton to accomplish 3/4 ton duties. Bless you guys and gals for trying, but I have to ask: if a 3/4 ton or 1 ton Toyota HD pickup were available would we even be having the conversations and angst over 1/2 ton payload? I doubt it. Instead we would hopefully have threads with titles like “Traded in my 1/2 ton Tundra for the 1 ton Tundra, and got the camper we’ve been wanting”.

Maybe someday Toyota will give a lot of you that room to grow within the brand.

Beat on a 1/2 ton and then a 3/4 ton, load up a 1/2 ton and then a 3/4ton it's a big difference. The 1/2tons are getting lightened up to make those mpg and increase payloads that when you do push them loaded up they are not the most sure footed. The 1/2 tons have become the new cars since no one buys those anymore. Which is fine I'm just saying if your gonna be working this thing I don't think it's gonna be for you. Each have the own place.

I agree with you that our toys have changed, and in most instances are out pacing the trucks. I think the pin weight in most 5th wheel campers now is even pushing or exceeding 2500hd limits pushing those guys too 3500's.

Well said, I agree with you. I doubt we would ever see an HD tundra, they are barely chasing the 1/2 ton market.

Yeah doesn’t seem to be a lot of enthusiasm from Toyota for the North American truck market.

RAM has coils in rear of their 3/4 tons. Just because they are coils doesn’t mean they aren’t “real springs”, especially for 1/2 ton capacity. The current Tundra leaf springs are probably the weakest part of the suspension.

What make u think Toyota going to put some HD coil springs on the tundra, what I mean of real spring, is some higher spring rate…

Any time I have talked to a dealership for a Tacoma or tundra they have said absolutely no wiggle room. You pay sticker or the next guy does. Not to say there’s not some deals to be found. MSRP is standard for Toyota.

They probably won’t, it’s a 1/2 ton. If you need more truck than that Toyota doesn’t have anything for you.

I got lucky with mine and ended up getting out the door at MSRP including all taxes, and fees on my 2020 TRD Pro.
