4.7 timing belt

I just had mine changed at 188,500 miles. It still had the original belt. I went w the Aisin brand and changed everything you guys are discussing here except the thermostat, i regret not changing that. I’m the 2nd owner, just picked it up. Original owner pulled a heavy boat w it on level ground, weekends and used it as a commuter too. He changed all fluids way too frequently which is a good thing and also suspicious. I also replaced the pressure lines for the power steering myself w AutoZone parts, OEM was almost ten times the price. It had been weeping/leaking fluid for a few years. Other parts replaced by the original owner are: radiator, alternator, power steering rack, rear brake drums & shoes and wheel cylinders, brake master cylinder, front brake pads, valve cover gasket, outer right side front axle, O2 sensor, matrix airbag inflator and front shock/struts. I just had BFG KO2s put on, slightly larger diameter and have bilstein shocks sitting in a box ready for install. It’s a solid truck. I’ve always owned Toyota trucks, 1987 pickup single cab 4wd 22R, 1995 T-100 ext cab 4wd, 2004 and a 2003 tacoma 4 door prerunner.

 

Yeah bro, don’t push it. I was told mine was done at 180k. I go to do mine at 270k and I’m pretty sure I was on the original belt. It was like a loose cracked noodle.

Remember, all 4.7’s are interference. The belt should look new when you replace it. It shouldn’t look worn at all.

 

And it's not like it's hard to peek in on the easier side to see the condition of the belt. No excuse for not checking it at least every couple years or 15-20k miles.

Context is everything. EL is always pretty big on recommending and using OEM for engine stuff. There are very few people (I'm one of them) who run full-OEM on everything, and even I can't say "everything", I couldn't tolerate OEM rear view mirror and sound system. But as far as engine? Will stay OEM. Tranny? OEM. Wheels? May keep OEM. Suspension? I may upgrade it for something better, we'll see. But generally speaking, OEM OEM OEM, even if it's not for my specific make/model.

 

I'm an OEM kinda guy as well - I even say so right under my name. Go ahead, look!

I did upgrade my rearview mirror with one to work with a backup camera but otherwise I'm pretty sure I'm all OEM (as I think thru it).
Ah, I have Husky floor liners but that's it...unless you count the GTA car kit that connects to my OEM head unit.

Nothing ive done has been oem. For 20 years ive either upgraded or swapped in the cheapness. But i guess jy parts are oem, so im a poser, too.

 

I mean, trying to source good OEM floor mats is damn near impossible, Toyota discontinued. In fact, a lot of OEM non-critical parts are being discontinued.

I missed out on a nice set of black Access Cab floor mats several months ago on eBay, they closed around $70. I saw the seller re-listed the exact same set not long after - guess that wasn't enough $$ for their taste - and they re-sold north of $120 if I recall.

But yeah, I dunno if I'd call anyone a poser over keeping things fashionably stock. The upgrades you've done added functionality to what is practically the most perfect truck ever made. It's the size of a Taco with a V8, comfortable, and well-optioned. Don't make em like this anymore!

 

Oem for engine related or bearings and the such. Aftermarket for shocks, springs, etc is fine..


What was being quoted was about axle seals if i remember right, I’ve had some really shitty aftermarkets that didn’t seal for more than a couple miles

Well, hopefully you are periodically taking the bolts out of one of the cam covers and checking the belt for cracks forming. That only takes 10 minutes or so and gives you some insight into how much time you have left before the bad thing happens.

Could be any number of issues. Spark plugs, injectors, throttle body, MAF, fuel filter, fuel pump, any number of position sensors (cam, throttle). Need more info. Any CEL's? Any recent work?

No, if the timing belt had jumped or lost teeth your truck would have issues other than cutting out. @KNABORES made some good points to look at but you really should create a new thread for your issue.

 

If it continues to do it after you spliced the cut wires last night, I suggest doing as @Desert Dog said and start a new thread for assistance. It may mean you need some minor maintenance like cleaning throttle body and MAF sensor, given items you have already replaced !

This is my 2004 4.7 original timing belt after 212,xxx miles (had not broken). Just in case anyone is curious about lifespan. I'm glad I changed it

 

Eh, it coulda gone another 100k.

Here I was prepared to say, "hell yeah, that's a testament to OEM quality right there!", and maybe it is, but brother, looking at that belt, I think you need to go buy a few lotter tickets cause you're a lucky SOB.
