Chrome Delete Covers for Tundra Bumpers - BumperShellz

So doing the install on the front ones when bending or just flexing the cover/shellz to put them does it make the paint crack or something? Or even if using the heat gun will make the plastic even more flexible that may ruin the paint? Anyone noticed something?

 

I just put my silver hood bulge and surround on the other day and the pieces are fairly rigid, although flexible. There is no damage done in the movement, tugging and pushing needed for the install. The surround went on in seconds, without any issues other some of the tape needing some heat to stick. However, I was totally less than impressed with the fit and install of the bulge. I prepped, I was ready, had everything set and just could not get the top left and right sides to stick, or quite make it all the way over the chrome edge. I removed, adjusted, pushed, prodded, heated, pressed, you name it and there just does not seem to be enough material to make it on each side. Along the top edge it’s fine, but as it slopes down, the 3M tape won’t stick under there and you can see the chrome. There needs to be more material in that area and thicker or better tape- but I can’t remove again and get under there to add anything. Even so if I get it to stick, you’ll still see the chrome edges poking out. Does it look better than before? Yes, but I’m pretty bummed that after all this time waiting, and the cost, I’m looking at those areas now and have been heating it and trying to get it to be less noticeable. Sadly thinking I may have to buy just an actual silver bulge so my OCD settles down and the plastic doesn’t look half assed or pulls away with ice this winter or cold temps. I am happy for those that had a great install and mine may be the exception as it is difficult to expect every truck and trim to be the same shape.

 

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I sent my end caps to the local shop and the painter said I have to be careful when put them on because the paint might crack.so I'm a bit concerned when that time comes

Can you send me pictures of what you're seeing with the hood bulge? You have waited a super long time for these, so I want to figure out what's going on and see what we can do to fix it.

Sorry about the rant- just was frustrated and out of time messing with it. I’m trying to figure out how to maybe get some stronger or thicker tape under there. It fits ok in all other areas, which leads me to believe I have it tight and pressed in where it needs to be. I think it’s mainly a tape issue and the shape somewhat on the upper corners. I cannot get them to stay down or completely reach the edge of the chrome. I’ve heated extensively and have got it to stick briefly when warm in the sun, but then both sides pop back up. Even pressed down you can still see some chrome, but I could live with it probably if the tape would somehow keep the corners down.

It looks like maybe you need the super thin 3m tape he was sending out with the recent orders. It almost looks from the pics that the tape is too thick and causing it to leave a gap where it’s not sealing. The second to last picture of yours you can see where it starts to stick up right where the thickness of the tape starts.

 

I have the same gap does bug me a tad bit. Was going take it off and try to get it down. Lmk what works. Seems like few other members having same issue

 

Thanks for the reply- I think they have the thin tape and it’s under there, but not touching at all. If I use heat or press down when it’s hot, it will still stick momentarily, then you hear the tape let go and it pops back up. It’s just too much of a gap and resistance with the shape of the plastic to stay down where it needs to be.

 

I may try to find a stronger tape, if there is one, and try to get some pieces in near the edge using tweezers or something. I’m not going to take this thing off again- if it comes off, it is stating off, lol. Been twice now, and I know that is not good for the tape adhesion.

 

They don’t add any thickness and look oem in my opinion. They sit so close to the chrome trim that unless you inspect the truck super closely, you would never know that it didn’t come with the color match trim. I had some difficulty installing the bulge piece and can still say that it looks stock.

 

i was among the first orders and my bulge cover came off while driving on the highway. I was able to pull over on NY 87 (very busy highway) and pull it off and threw it in the back. I contacted CS and a new one is on the way.
Lesson: be careful with the bulge trim if it doesn't stick like the other pieces.

 

Thank you for all of the help! I was able to get into it today and found that the sensor was a bit snug in the hole. I removed it and filed the hole all the way around to give it some clearance and once I put everything back together they worked as before. Glad it’s all good to go now. Thank you.

 

Tape is the key. I'm going to send you out a bunch so you can re-tape it if you can get it off. If something goes wrong with that, send me a message

 

Are we really relying on a bunch of tape to hold these things in place? That doesn't seem like a long term solution, especially for those who live in extreme cold or hot climates.

 

I think if done right in conjunction with well fitted pieces, the 3M Automotive tape does work well. I’ve had the rear bumper covers from this company on older Tacomas for years and years, as well as the front and rear covers on my Tundra for a few years now up here in northern NH. Cold temps are concerning, so I want to make sure all points of contact are touching properly, and hopefully it will be fine.

 

The 3M tape we use is specifically designed for chrome and other low surface energy applications. Like @Hammy68 said, as long as if the tape is touching down, or not being held off in some areas there won't be any issues with it. Hot and Cold isn't an issue after installation. Just when the tape is wetting out initially. Generally speaking, adhesion hasn't been something we have needed to worry about. The tape is extremely strong when bonded. The times where we see it crop up are instances like the hood bulge where we are dealing with an entirely new application with tiny tolerances, so there is some variation somewhere that we haven't seen in our testing. And on that note, if you are seeing issues with adhesion anywhere early on, just shoot me a message and I'll do whatever to make sure we don't scare the crap out of any more wives on the highway lol

All that being said, I too feel better when I bolt something on instead of praying that some magic tape holds it on haha. There just aren't any mechanical fasteners available near the hood bulge, but we use them extensively on the front and rear BumperShellz

 

Doing another MGM/Attitude Black/Silver Sky run late next week. Also, Matte Black will be back in stock for those of you that have been waiting for that!

That is the first color we are going to be painting in our booth. Might do a test run here of maybe 10-15 sets only on the forum to grease the skids. We're still buried with orders which is the only thing that is slowing up that process right now. At the end of next week, I'll post another update about the coming cement run. To stave off questions, I'm probably not going to do a waitlist for that one right now because it's so up in the air and I don't want to set expectations that I can't guarantee. It'll just be when I get the green-light from our paint manager and I'll post a certain number of sets for sale.
