I've owned my crewmax for 8 months and want to install a larger and/or 2nd fuel tank. What has been anyone's experience with this? What has worked and maybe more importantly, what has not worked?

That is the tank my truck came with also. I replaced it with the transfer flow tank. The only downside, other than cost, is that there is now 200lb semipermanent payload on the truck. If you have any questions let me know.

I am thinking about installing the 46 gallon aftermarket fuel tank myself. Does it impact your MPG at all with the extra payload?

Gasoline weighs around 6-6.5 lbs per gallon (the exact value depends on the composition, temperature, etc.) So at 46 gallon, the total fuel is less than 300 lbs at the most (taking 6.5). Stock tank holds roughly about 170 lbs of fuel. So difference is less than 130 lbs (plus the hardware weight difference). Considering many members carry tools, etc. that weighs far more than 130 lbs, I would think the difference in mpg is very small.

Short answer is yes, but I'm not sure how much the tank is responsible for.
With the Snugtop, sliders, winch & mount, fuel tank, Decked Drawers, skids, and tools, I've added in excess of 1K permanent lb's. Mpg is around 14.

You failed to include the weight increase of the steel tank itself, over the little plastic OEM tank. Increase is in excess of 200lb.

I din't know the specs of the tank. I did mention it though in the parenthesis about the weight of the hardware. Does the steel tank have tendency to rust, just curious. I am interested in this tank (there's a dealer in town), but can't justify it. I fill up the tank only once a month.

I got the tank lineXed after it got here and before install. I'm in AZ, so rust is not an issue, but when i move to Oregon i will definitely have to keep an eye on it. Transfer flow sells em with coating as an option, also.

Curious -- other than the wasted bed space and manually pumping, what else is wrong with that setup in your opinion?

Don't have to manually pump. Just hook up a switch value to drain the bed tank into the factory tank and keep driving. Bed tank would be cheaper, easier and can be found in L shaped aluminum that fits behind and under your tool box and only take up 6-8 inches of bed room. I've been looking for a used one.

I have had the 46 gal Transferflow on my 14 CM for just over a month now. LOVE IT! Wish I would've done it sooner. I have not seen it affect my MPG. I can go 400 miles before the low gas light comes on and I have another 50-100 miles to go before I start looking for a gas station. My current MPG with how I drive and all my custom work is at 11.3 MPG. So mathematically, I can go 520 miles. Which is a huge improvement over the previous stock 26 gal.

I've been looking and they are about 1200 or so for the under truck tank. I'm having a hard time with that and want something less expensive and maybe even removable

Its a bit pricy but I am going to Alaska with this truck permanently. Fuel can be far and wide depending on where you are.

I am also going to need my bed space for another fuel tank, hose, and pump set up for airplane fuel. I have a full size ARE camper shell with the structure inside for roof rack coming so I will build a little shelf above the airplane fuel tank for storing gear.

I think that I can use the left slide window to fill that tank and to pull my hose in and out through. Will see how I can engineer it.

Looking forward to your setup. Sounds creative but definitely doable.

What are you doing in AK? I spent a summer theere in 2000 in the Talkeetnas and Chugach. You'll love it I'd you've never been

I spent $1745 total for the tank, shipping, the install and a full tank of gas to make sure it worked.

Transfer flow is 46 gal and will cost you less than the 36 gal Toyota tank.
I'm not sure why anyone would get the Toyota tank unless it was free.
For me, since the truck came with the stupid stock 28 gal tank, it was an obvious choice to upgrade.
