I agree. They’re crazy. Just make a fair deal now, and help sell available inventory today. Because sooner or later the lots will be flooded with vehicles.

 

Ford has already said they won’t be returning to pre COVID inventory levels. All the auto companies see cars/trucks selling at these prices, so why would they increase supply when people are still willing to pay the current prices? I don’t see prices ever going back to what they were just a year and a half ago

I somewhat agree, but with how cheap debt is and people taking out 7-8 year auto loans, the high prices clearly don’t deter people.

 

That’s true but the cost to finance won’t be this cheap either.

Thw problem with fords thinking , IMO, is that everyone was affected by the shortage. There’s a lot of technology and most makers have it and rely on the same vendors to supply it. But once that supply comes back and vehicle supply comes back if Ford continues to limit inventory and sell at MSRP less low rebates then either all competitors will do it or they could say fuck that and go back to their heavy rebates and sell as many as they can supply.

I’ve thought about this. Like why did you idiot buyers come out and pay MSRP and in some cases over. I had friends buying telluride and carnivals for 5-8k over msrp. Because now that will be the norm.

But the more I thought it just isn’t sustainable in the long run. Now how long that is, who knows.

 

I agree, it is not sustainable and I think it will happen quick, you can bet that no one is holding inventory back on purpose to keep a market going one way or another. If GM could dump 100K trucks on the market this afternoon...they would and they would offer whatever rebates they could to move them as fast as they can. Cash has to turn, the slower it turns the less its worth. Just the other day I saw a commercial for one of Chevy's cars and they were offering a huge rebate program on...I watched it and said, well...looks like whatever parts it took to finish those cars came in and they are shipping them out by the ton.

Remember for the most part the manufacturers are making most of the same money on the product, its the dealers who are making more on each item....it does not benefit the manufacturer to hold back product so a dealer can keep more money.

I think your first sign is going to be when the used market values cool a little.

 

That’s true for GM. The chip shortage is affecting the start/stop and they can build without out so they are giving $50 credits. They are pushing any truck out with what they got.


Made some mad because I’ve seen people on forums buying stuff to permanently disable it and now it comes from the factory disabled and eith a $50 credit lol

 

Ford has tons of Trucks just sitting right now as well, at some point all those trucks will ship, and probably right about the same time.

 

I agree the market will return to normal, so don't expect to make money on trade in. However, The 3rd gen Taco sales have grown continuously throughout production (Toyota sales them as fast as they can make them) and that did not effect 2nd gen resale values in the slightest. If it were me, I would buy the cheapest 2021 I could find that met my requirements and not consider a next gen Tundra until model year 2023 so Q4 of 2022. I never buy the first year model of a new design.

 

I would not expect Ford to say any different, it is in all the manufacturers interest right now to keep people buying. They know if they say any different it would cause a pause, so whether it is true or not...they kind of have to say that or they risk causing a buying pause that would be devastating to their cash flow.

 

Yep, I know several guys at work who ran right the hell over to the local GMC dealership to trade in their GMCs/Chevys soon as newer versions came out without the AFM or whatever it's called.

 

3rd Gen Taco resale values while normally solid, are very inflated right now. If you purchase a Tacoma right now, you will feel it on the other end when resale values go back to normal. They are about 7-10K more than what they should be right now. ( I know, I own one and I knew what its resale was a year ago vs now).

I agree. That wasn't the point I was trying to make. I was trying to point out the new Tundra will not effect the resale value of the current Tundra. So buying a new one now (as long as you don't overpay) will not bite you when you trade it in later. Sure trade in will return to normal, but that's still a good return for Tundra's.

 

Not overpaying is the issue right now, I have seen people pay a lot more than they should for Tundra's and Tacomas the past couple of months, believing that the resale values will still stay at their current level. Getting an extra 7K than you normally would for your trade, is not a good deal when you just paid 10K more than you should for the vehicle you traded in on....lol....I see it every day!

 

Whether the new tundra affects the resale of the other gen's is still an unknown. Disregarding those that are stuck on looks based on one picture, if the truck is a better truck spec and performance wise, it may indeed cool the market for the previous generation. Full size trucks are a little different market than midsize in that regard because there can be a big difference in capability (what makes a truck). Since the Tundra has not changed in so long there really isn't much data to compare.

I know that I would not buy a 2021 Tundra right now knowing there is a new one coming out until I could compare apples to apples.

 

If I was in your situation, from what I understand you want to get out of the current lease, don't immediately need a truck, want to see how the 2022 Tundra pans out, etc... I would buy a RAV 4. It is currently the top selling model for Toyota, actually of all brands, so you know you will easily get rid of it in a year or two with good resale value when you are ready for the Tundra. In the mean time payments will be low so you can save some down payment towards the Tundra.

 

We need a larger vehicle, and want a truck. My buyout for the CRV right now is 19500, I pay that and I own it. I might do that if I want to ride out the market, but my itch is now getting her itch going to get a truck. We don't want another SUV (she's the only person I know that doesn't like the Telluride and Palisades, lucked out there).

 

If any manufacturer could bring out a ton of trucks and sell at 'normal' prices they'd make a killing right now. Sure people have a certain one they like, but if you can get a similar one just in a different brand for $10-15k less I bet most would jump on it so fast. Combine that with insane trades currently and it would be huge if a manufacturer could pump out trucks at a normal rate.

 

I'm just someone who wants a truck and will impulse buy to have one so I stay here to keep me grounded.

 

Well, that's not a bad situation to be in. I would typically rather go for the 21 Tundra (because I do a lot of miles), but if it is a short term buy to transition to the new Tundra in a couple years, then the F-150 might be attractive option also, since you might be out of it by the time it is out of warranty. That way you are not buying a "14 year old technology truck" and you can enjoy the up to date bells and whistles of the Ford.

I just sent an adjusted F150 build to the Ford dealer I've been talking to. $64,865 MSRP for the Lariat and came back with $57,200 purchase price + TTL and $199 dealer fee. And if there's any rebates at delivery I would get those. Not bad.
