It all boils down to opinions and preferences. Everyone can have their own, but when people start calling others stupid for having a different view... that's just them showing their asses.

TTV6 will for power at high altitude, but once you get into boost the MPG's are actually worse at high altitude. TFL has done the Ike Gauntlet with turbo's vs V8's and the V8's get slightly better MPG with the same trailer. Pick your poison kind of thing.

not to be a jerk at all, but stop just talking about rear end gearing, its not that simple anymore with clogs in the trans.

You have to look at final ratios. like I said in my other post my ram with a ZF8 and a 3.92 was damn near shorter overall in 2nd that my tundra is in 1st with a 4.30.

its a different game out there now with 8 and 10 speeds.

again, that said, they have to get the tune right, but I bet they have it right!! They know this thing is going to have to pull like a mother-phucker or they can just pack up and go home. I bet they have it nailed!!!

This is generally going to be offset by the MPGs when not towing, but then that is offset by the turbos frequently needing premium fuel. Quite the conundrum.

I expect towing to be significantly improved on the new truck.

Why do you expect a smaller fuel tank? I don't see a reason for them to do that. Rear end gearing is only part of the equation, there's a new transmission coming and the gearing in it matters just as much as the rear end. Turbochargers enhance the towing experience a lot in my experience, they make power at a lower RPM so you don't have to rev the heck out of it. There's a reason every OTR truck on the interstate is turbocharged. I don't know what fuel economy the new truck will get towing but it can't be much worse than my 5.7 gets now. I care more about fuel economy for the 98% of the time I'm not towing with it though, 15 mpg has gotten really, really old and if it'll get 22-23 mpg that'll be a HUGE win.

I agree that a half ton isn't what someone needs if they're towing significant weight on a constant basis. That being said, the 5.7 isn't the towing monster some here make it out to be. Boosted engines and towing naturally go together because the power can be made lower in the RPM band, that's the main reason I expect the new engine to outperform the 5.7.

It doesn't mean that it will be the same size, The new Tundra shares the same platform and its more than likely larger than the Land Cruiser, they are also going to use the same platform for the 4 runner and Tacoma...Using the same platform does not necessarily mean the same size. I meant that the interior may be similar as well as capabilities.

FYI: Comparing gassers to diesels is as bad as howling about axel gearing without accounting for the transmission.

    It is predictable and comical.

We don’t know hard details yet, but the crowd that doesn’t like new things hates it for a variety of speculative reasons.

Funny most of the pushback is from guys with either nearly newer Tundras that probably wouldn’t buy a new one regardless of what it was; or guys with 1st Gen Tundras that are clearly never buying a new truck ever for any reason.

I didn't realize the new Tundra and LC were the same platform also. Since the new LC is being sold places where the Tundra is not, it wouldn't make sense to share a platform. They're built and sold in different countries. Got any concrete primary source on that before I stick it in the old memory bank?

Not really. I own both and while there are significant differences the same principles apply. A turbocharger does the same thing on both of them and greatly broadens the powerband. Many here probably are too young to remember when diesel pickups came without turbos. Ford made a 7.3 IDI diesel that was a dog before they got the 7.3 Powerstroke which was a much, much better engine.

Far too many here pee down their legs about turbochargers without reason, they've been around about 100 years and if designed right they'll outlast the engine. There's nothing magical about a normally aspirated V8, a boosted V6 can easily be built to outperform one. I'd have preferred it be an inline 6 but the V6 doesn't bother me.

guy just pulled up across the street from my house in a red GMC AT4, slick looking truck...

cant wait to test out that against a new 2022 tundra, truck shopping is awesome, some really nice rigs out there from everyone, well except Nissan, just never got the titan, HA!

who cares about MPG, show me the power, I get at the most 12 now anyway, with only sandbags in the back to smooth this thing out a touch, LOL.

According to Car & Driver the Pro comes with Falken Wildpeak AT's on 18s. Pro MSRP $50K + and the base model at $36K. Not crazy msrp's but the Pro will no doubt be higher due to demand. If there still is a used truck shortage, then a trade in tunny should be high. Dealers will still want used tunnies to sell. They need used stock trucks on their lots....sticking with my boring V8.

As I understand it, They are using the TNGA-F platform for all the body on frame vehicles, The LC was the first introduced and it looks like the Tundra is gong to be the second. According to their schedule next will be the Sequoia and 4 runner, and then the Tacoma. The 4 runner is also not made in America they are all made at the same plant in Japan.

If you think the new tundra is a fun release, just wait until they intro the next Tacoma and it only has a 4 cylinder turbo available for the powerplant..lol

The truck is ugly, yes, but Toyota will sell every single one they make without issue. An just cuz it's ugly doesn't mean I won't own one, I mean I drive a 2020, not too worried about looks

I’m torn on what to do. Get a truck now or Hope one of these is available. I don’t think I’ll get one at MSRP if at all. I still like the 2021 looks.

Who cares if the mpg decrease when towing in the mountains. All that torque, this changes the quality and safety for towing.
Probably 1-3% of Tundras are used daily for towing. 6-9mpg towing and 22-25 hwy otherwise. No brainer.
Give this Taco Grande 3 years and the majority will love the engine.

Didn't the current tundra get about 3-4 mpgs towing during the Ike gauntlet test? Twin turbo can't do too much worse than that can it?

Toyota will not require premium fuel. They do to much research on their buying demographic. Just look at this truck. It was basically built out of buyer surveys.

Not sure if Ford requires it for general use either, but if you want the numbers on the spec sheets then it is required.

To me the 22 looks so much better, but if there were deals on the 21 I’d buy one today. I’m just not paying msrp on a sr5 or any other 21. Heck I don’t think I’m willing to pay msrp on a 22. May take me a while to get a new one
