1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

I was doing some work in an RV park and spotted an old maverick. Just happened to have a 1st gen next to it.

 

I'm not a Ford guy by any means but I like it. The color and wheels are nice.

Now I need to decide how I am going to organize the tools. Probably tool rolls. I think the sewing machine is about to do some work.

A buddy of mine had one in high school. It had a 302 and a posi, I'm not sure of what else. Quick car in a straight line. It made quick work of my crx, but then a turn came and we know how american cars from back then handled...

 

Yeah a guy I knew had one around 2005, he had too faith in how fast it was but it was a really cool car. I believe he had a 302, it was a small V8 and not a 351.

I challenged him a few times with my quick beetle, he always had a reason to decline. One of those cars where looking at it I assume it is fast but I never got to see it really in action. His was a weird bronzish brown with white stripes.

 

I bought a cheap tool roll of eBay that works well. I'm sure whatever you sew would be better quality though. If you can spare the room, I'm really happy with my Swing Case for storing tools.

PSA to all of you, be really careful and use jack stands when going under the vehicle. I know it's common knowledge but don't make any exceptions.

I had a coworker who worked on cars all the time, I've even spotted him changing another coworkers brakes while he was on the clock in the company parking lot. "side job pays more on company time"

I just heard that he was working on his truck yesterday and it fell on him, dead at the scene. He's been working on cars for a long time and knew the rules. I haven't heard detail on what he was doing or if he had stands or the tires under it. He was such a fun guy to chat with, he's gonna be missed.

Please use jack stands guys.

 

Damn, sorry to hear that. I second the safety first credo. Jack stands, eye protection, and having a fire extinguisher in the shop are high on my list.

 

I had to look up a video of that. I like it but the bed is always full when we camp so that would not work for me.

I forgot I started a thread earlier in the year. I am calling this project officially underway.

 

I have been pretty careless in the past. My dad never taught me that lesson.

I think weddings or graduations should come with wheel chocks and jack stands.

Build a bed box. You'd be surprised the amount of things I carry full time and never have to take out unless needed, even to sleep.

 

Its a horrific way to go. I haven't heard the full details yet but knowing it was at his house, picturing his wife and kids seeing it makes me uneasy.

I've done a lot of careless things. Stories like this make me think twice.

 

I am pretty much open to any and all organization options at this point.

I think some sort of center diy slide is at the top of my list right now. Figuring out how to store MTBs road bikes, kayak chairs, paddles and life vests, grills, firewood ect has put me in decision paralysis. I end up pulling junk out and putting it back several times on a trip. Oh and I also want to have a full time bed and the kitchen sink like my old truck.

In my experience, some of the old school guys that have been doing it a long time are the least safe. There is a reason they say complacency kills. My neighbor at our last house was one of the best mechanics I've ever met. He worked on everything from heavy equipment to jet ski's. I can't tell you how many times I saw him work on a vehicle with only the jack supporting it. They typically aren't the type that handles constructive criticism well either.

This also reminds me of a story out of CA from a few years ago. During one of the earth quakes some unlucky SOB was working on his car when it hit, and it fell on him. That's some final destination stuff.

 

Ah, that helps picture it better. Center slider sounds cool, maybe in two pieces where either the front half or back half can be raised? Can you lift up the top on the left side as it is now? Can't tell if those are screws. Eventually you'll get to the point where packing is no brainer when everything finds it's right space.

I tend to pack the stuff I'll be least least likely to need immediately where its the last thing I can get out. Bikes sound like they can take a lot of room!

 

@FirstGenVol I agree 100%. Some of the old school guys have done it long enough that they don't see a need for safety. This guy was maybe 35 years old, but had been working on cars since he was a kid.

The neighbor across from my brother in law (not the towel rack guy) had a horrific night once. He was home alone, his wife was out of town for the weekend and he decided to work on his car in the garage with the door shut. It fell on his legs. He screamed until a neighbor showed up trying to communicate through the shut garage door. Eventually the neighbor broke his sliding door and walked in to help. He wasn't using any stands.

My wife doesn't like when I go under cars since that happened.

 

There is that awkward period though between jacking the car up and positioning the jack stands. There is at least a few seconds where you are doing it without much protection. I guess that's why leaving the tires under there is a good idea too.

 

In it's current iteration there is not side access on this camper shell so everything has to come out the back. I do have front access, but it is not easy unless you are a rear passenger.

I think I have a pipe dream.

 

I make it habit of putting stands and then tires or something just a wee bit extra. I’ve had a jack stand fail (no it wasn’t harbor freight). Scared the shit out of me. But luckily the car landed on the 4Runner wheel I usually shove

So I threw my second spare in the bed for my last trip and I can tuck my rolled up bed on top of it, only draw back is that I lose all my rear view vision. Could actually through stuff inside the wheel if I wanted. Since my bed box opens in two sections I can still access the space underneath if the rear of my bed is empty.

I'm going to have to figure out a hitch mounted carrier because I may be losing my underneath carrier eventually.

I've been to both, but spent more time at Trestle. I personally like Angelfire better, but have only spent one day there. Angelfire is less rocky and more flowy, but trestle is bigger. If Angelfire wasn't 3 hour farther away, it would be my go to bike park.

 

That is pretty much what I needed to hear. We also like flowy. When you say bigger do you mean bigger jumps or just a bigger park? We had just about decided to spend our vacation riding in AR but now I really want to go check Anglefire out.

 

How many of you remember going to a relatives house to help work on his car and find a few of these in place of jack stands?

 

Where is the cheapest place to get the big m18 impact?

Wilco and RIGd make nice hitch carrier options, but damn are they expensive. Might be time for a high clearance bumper with integrated swing out?
