So you loaded something excessively heavy in the bed of your truck and it didn’t break?
When you are hauling trailers this big with your entire family it isn’t the time to be “half assed”. This isn’t “I loaded a pallet of pavers in my truck and drove ten miles home from Home Depot”.

A honda ridgeline, chevy s10 and a ford windstar have a higher payload rating than a crewmax. You ever think the number is bullshit?

Besides the soft leaf springs, everything about the truck is light duty 3/4 ton size. Old 3/4 ton trucks had a 8600 gvwr.

OP should use his WD hitch, get airbags, and pull his camper.

Don't you think that Toyota would have benefited from putting a higher payload number on the Tundra if it really could? I understand that the truck may be able to hold the weight but for how long before something breaks? Shoot with my truck the steering would feel light with it being at the payload limit I can't imagine how it would feel with 3k pounds in the bed.

I actually own a 3/4 ton truck. If you compare the components the Tundra is not even close. The Tundra is a heavy 1/2 ton truck, which leads to a smaller payload rating.

I have given the OP a few pointers on how to make it safely work based on my experience and research. Feel free to read them and let me know if you disagree.

The OP doesn’t need to use airbags but if he does you need to careful about using it with a WDH. Not setting it up properly will cancel out the weight distribution and sway control properties.

Old 3/4 tons are just that…old tech that couldn’t pull a greased rope out of a goats ass.

Please show me what is 3/4 ton sized on the tundra. (Waiting patiently for the 10.5” ring gear comment)

The Tundra, like all other manufacturers have gone to the J2807 standard. Toyota had to lower their ratings due to this standard. The other manufacturers had to up their game to increase them. These trucks are tested…and any more payload or trailer weight made them fail the J2807 standard. It’s just that simple.

I’m really hoping the 2022 Tundra is all that I have been hearing.

I'm towing close to your weights and also over payload. You won't have any issues. Most are over payload and tow safely. Your under your GVWR. I've towed through the Rockies over and down the steepest grades. No issues or handling problems.

Probably not. OP didnt even check the payload before he bought one. If Toyota made a 3/4 ton rated tundra it would be a huge flop.

I own a HD 3/4 ton truck too. The tundra has more power and stops faster. About the only thing bigger on it is the rear section of the frame, the leaf packs, and the full floating axle.

4 wheel disc brakes, 4 piston disc on the front that need a 17" wheel. Older light duty 3/4 ton trucks had semi float axles and a 10k tow rating. In my opinion the payload is underrated.

I'm not really sure how or why we are talking about "old" 3/4 tons and comparing them to a Tundra of today. Maybe we should be comparing a new HD gas and diesel truck of today against the 1st gen tundra. That is how ridiculous this sounds.

So I am just going to ask, what light duty 3/4 ton in the past two decades has a semi-floating rear axle? I remember some Suburbans (as late as '91) with SF rear 14 bolt axles. If we are going back that far, the Tundra was just a fart in the wind.

Hell, the only "older" truck I would even consider is a 2005-2006 GM HD truck with the 8.1L Vortec/Allison combo. That would only be a ranch truck at best. Even my 2016 GMC 3500 is outclassed by today's HD market, which is ok since I don't want to sell mine and pull an additional 45000.00 out of my investments to pay for one.

The Tundra does have some large components for a half ton truck. You can really see this when comparing the curb weights with the big three. However, towing 10K with my old '06 F350 SRW is like towing 6K with wy Tundra. I do suspect most of that is attributed to the leaf packs and the rigidity of the rear frame.

Tow what you want with your Tundra but a current 3/4 or 1 ton will blow it out of the water. This is coming from someone that loves the Tundra. There really is just no comparison to a HD truck.

Not sure how old your 3/4 ton is. The current HD components are way beyond what is in the current Tundra.

I really enjoyed my Tundra and it did well towing. It is a huge difference towing with a current HD truck though.

Because I said older 3/4 ton trucks had a gvwr of 8600. Many had semi float axles. When compared to a 07+ tundra, the tundra is the same or better. GM is still putting semi floats in 3/4 ton 8600gvwr vans. I think they abandoned them in pickups in the early 2000s when they abandoned making light duty 3/4 tons. I think Dodge and Ford also stopped making light duty 3/4 ton trucks.

My point is that I wouldn't worry about the going over what the sticker says. 1200 pound payload or whatever rediculous number they give for a crewmax. Would I replace a 3/4 ton truck with a Tundra or go tow a 3/4 ton sized camper with a tundra? No.

The only odd things I noticed was a very feint intermittent squealing sound coming from the front & it seemed to want to slightly pull to the right. I figured it was the crosswind since it didn't seem to be as much of a problem on the way home.

Nice, we're hoping this gets us through our camping life with kids. Planning on downgrading once they all move out in the VERY distant future. So, probably sticking with what we got.

Early 2000’s 3/4 ton gas powered axle right in my garage.

When the others use aluminum body panels the weight drops pretty quick. Being heavy in most cases is good.

I know that the F250HD's had a full floater all the way back in 1990. My '99 F250 Super Duty had a Sterling 10.25" full floater. Not sure about Dodge and Chevy though. They all did weird stuff with their lineups back then. Can you believe that Ford had a F250 with 7700 GVW and a F250HD with a 8800 GVW? Strange times for sure.

The “light 3/4” trucks from the 90’s were def not hd trucks. I owned one.

they had bigger rear axle and thicker frame rails, however the trans and all front suspension components were 1/2 ton units. The term “bigger” rear axle was misleading. Chevy used a semi floating 14 bolt, which was similar to our tundra axle. The standard half ton axle at the time was a weak as crap 10 bolt. So really the half tons used an inferior unit. The light 3/4 of 1994 was equal to todays half tons really

It all boils down to if something breaks, mfg don't want to have any liability. So the consumer gets the shaft.

I wonder what the payload is for a Ford Model T and how that compares to Tundra? Now that would be amazing to see how much those wood spoked wheels would take….

Check out some old mining wagons. You will be shocked at how massive they were. I'd say about ten yards of ore capacity.

I am in the tile installation business. Added Super Springs to the rear of my Tundra and often carry loads around 2K pounds. I have put almost 500K miles on my two Tundras without issue.

Liability LMAO!!! I been hit by two uninsured drivers in the last 5 months. Police don't even issue a citation. Insurance company doesn't care if they don't have insurance they don't go after them for personal assets. Tow any weight you want nobody gives a shit that insures or enforces the law. All these snowflakes. Oh I am over by 200lbs, Oh need smaller trailer, do what you want everyone else does. Zero repercussions. Let the flames begin....

Unfortunately most of us are probably over payload anytime we tow or haul. Put 4 good size guys and your hunting gear in the bed and you are at or over payload. Tow the trailer with a side by side on it and payload is way over.

More truck or less trailer is my official recommendation.

However, if I had your trailer, I'd get everything loaded up and go to some certified scales. The numbers I'd pay attention to are the axle ratings. There is quite the discrepancy between GVWR and GAWR on our trucks. On my truck, it's 1000lbs difference. I would have no problem being over payload as long as I stayed under my GAWR. If I weren't comfortable with that, I'd take advantage of the INSANE Tundra resale value and trade it in on a GMC HD gasser. :headbang: I love my truck though. I'd probably just make it work.

You nailed it! I almost consumed payload just with suspension, armor, tires, tools, lights, etc. Hell, seat covers alone are almost 50 freaking pounds lol. Don't even talk to me about passengers and luggage. Tow in the dark, fewer eyes, less traffic, kids are asleep, less heat build up, etc.

Remember, it is very expensive to tow an HD truck and trailer back to the dealership, and most service departments are not open on the weekend.
