CB shims as a very slight lift for the front?

Anyone use CB shims with stock OR suspension as a very slight lift for the front? I know it’s not much different from stock but I would love to see pictures if anyone has!

I’m wondering if I can add essentially 1/2 or 1 inch of lift to the front with shims and then get 285/70r18 ridge grapplers in there without rubbing. I already removed the splash guards In the front of the wheel well.

I think it would look sick, and I need to maintain some rake because I have an atv in the bed and a camper hitched up quite a bit in the warmer months.

It would work. It’d be like a mini spacer lift.

Remember your ride would be rougher due to preloading the spring.

I thought the CB shims didn't preload the springs as they went on top of the coilover instead of underneath the top hat compressing the coils.

285/70 18s will fit stock suspension, with the stock OR wheels. I run 275/70 18 and the others are just slightly bigger. At most you may have to remove the front air flaps.

But yes, you could do a half inch lift or so with those shims, but not needed for those tires if you are using +60 offset wheels.

You would have to search for it, but there is a thread on this site about someone installing that size on a stock truck

You could be right. It made mine ride rougher and ended up taking them out. I had two on the drivers side and one on the passenger side for the tundra lean issue on my Bilstein 6112’s, on the lowest setting.

You think it made the ride rougher?? Did you change tires or other suspension parts at the same time?

Could be my imagination, but it felt better once I pull one out of the drivers side and one on the passenger side.

I'm not sure how a shim on top of the coilover would make the front end ride stiffer. I had a 1" spacer on top off my factory coilovers for a month until my lift came in. It rode just like stock. Just make sure you install bumpstop spacers to take into account the extended down travel.

I’ve got two on each side of my Pro suspension and didn’t notice a difference in ride quality. I think you’d be ok. Did you change your mind on assembling new coilovers?

I did!! I was trying to get myself to like the idea of 295’s on 2.5”/1.5” lift but it’s just higher than I need.

I knew I would drive it every day feeling like an idiot because I would never actually use that setup the way it was intended. lol

Not knocking it. I’m just very critical of myself. I wish I could just rock it and be happy because it looks sick! I can’t. Haha

If you like the look then I say go for it. You might find you’ll end up using it off road more later on once you do that too. You live in a great state for it

I’ve gone back and forth on that. I think the 285/70s with shims will scratch my itch and keep my towing situation squared away!

If you decide to go with the CB shims, I have a set of 1/2” shims (adding a 1” lift) that I will list in the coming weeks when my new coilovers come in.

You will spend more money for small 1” inch lift then just getting a 2” or 2.5 leveling kit for your truck I assume it’s normal TRD. Now if it was a pro then yea CB shims to add to already leveling kit and keep ride then same I’ve had mine since new and 30k miles now not a issue at all smooth….. but like I said if I was you get leveling kit and add some shackles from CB for rear if you want…and Go 295/70/18 our truck look awesome with 295’s or bigger….

That’s just not true at all. I don’t want a spacer lift because it pre-loads the spring, and any other leveling kit will cost more than the shims by quite a lot.

Also, I can easily install shims in my garage with the tools I’ve got.

Finally, like I said previously, I realized i just don’t want to go as big as 295’s. Don’t need it and I think the 285’s on a more stock look are going to look sweet.

You've done a great job on your research,

We have guys add our shims to their OE struts all the time. Usually they use our 1.00" shim kit but can use the .50"s and would recommend using 2 on driver and 1 on passenger to correct the driver side lean.

Difference between a leveling spacer and our shim is the total thickness used does not exceed .50" if you install anything thicker than .50" you are no longer positioned in the center line of stroke. Meaning the amount of up travel is greater than the amount of down travel. This is why most will notice how much bouncier or firmer it feels after installing a leveling spacer. Shims are installed above the top plate and will not add any additional preload.. another benefit to using them. Just a simple tool providing the opportunity to dial in your stance.

    Hope this helps.

I’m sold. My tundra is a 2018 and I don’t really have any lean (yet?). Should I just order an extra 1/2” and add it to the drivers side preemptively?

I just put half inch shims on top of my icons. Got right at 1 inch of lift. Put a set of +2 rear shackles too. Truck rides great. Can't tell the shims were even put in.

The lean is mostly an aftermarket coil issue. If you are keeping the stock springs in place you won’t have to worry about it.

I can vouch for the CB shim quality. I installed their 0.25" shims on top of the TRD Pro Fox coilovers for a 2.5" total lift and all fit perfect.

This seems like a pretty inexpensive way to level the truck - anyone have a totally stock suspension with just the CB Shims?

Wouldn't the Rough Country 1.75" Level Kit (https://www.roughcountry.com/toyota-leveling-lift-kit-88000.html) be the same idea, just 1.75" instead of the 1" provided by CB? Everything I keep reading seems like they are installed in "generally" the same location on top of the coil-over. Am I missing something?

As always, appreciate all the knowledge on here.

"Leveled" is considered a 2" lift in the front relative to the rear. So technically you wouldn't be level after 1" of lift in the front, but yes, it will give you some of the benefits of levelling or adding coilover shocks with perch at .9" or similar. David's explanation up a little bit is solid on what goes on with a spacer lift.
