Added H-Pipe and Resonators to TRD Exhaust

Worked for me. Sounds good and i might have to stop at my local muffler shop and talk to them.

Thanks for posting the video clips. Startup and light throttle does sound more like stock exhaust from what I hear.

Folks seem to hear and notice when my TRD exhaust is started for instance in a parking lot so I consider it somewhat of safety feature side benefit.

It’s always hit or miss with these videos. When I first heard them, I was surprised, because the exterior sound is louder than what I hear in the cab since adding the H pipe.

 

Did you receive the helmholtz resonators yet?

I e-mailed you yesterday and you said they are shipping out Friday. I take that as this Friday, so I should have them next week since they are coming to the East Coast.

 

Update:

The resonators were delivered yesterday, and my local exhaust shop installed them this morning before I went to work.

Props to Keith - they fit perfectly. I had my doubts because that's a lot of pipe and angles to squeeze into a small area, but they went in without issue, and cleared everything just fine.

Also props to my local exhaust guy. Tom Stack at Low Cost Exhaust in Fairless Hills PA (Bucks County). He did the H pipe a few weeks back and the resonators today (lined everything up and torched the hole so I didn't have to drop the tailpipes).

I'm going to put the truck on ramps this weekend when I'm off and have some good daylight and take pictures or video from underneath so you can see the setup.

For now, just some feedback. No need for video. With the H pipe and the dual resonators, the TRD sounds pretty much like OEM stock on the inside - maybe a little deeper in tone, but not by much. Nothing that video would ever pick up. The only exception is when you're heavy on the throttle, it has a little bit more than stock, but it's still very quiet on the inside. Again, nothing that video would ever capture. For comparison, I had Keith's standard 12 inch system with resonator on a previous Tundra, and the TRD with H pipe and dual resonators is quieter than the 12 inch system.

This is not something I would recommend if you don't already have a TRD exhaust. It doesn't make sense to spend $1,100 and then spend more to make it quiet. In my case, my truck was a dealer demo/leftover with 700 miles that was discounted 20%. So I couldn't pass that deal up. But it came with the TRD exhaust. I tried it for about 6,000 miles. Loved the WOT throttle sound, but couldn't deal with the resonance at light throttle and cruising between 40 and 65 mph. I didn't want to go back to stock, because the TRD is a nice looking system, so I figured I would use the information and resources available on this forum to quiet it down. And it worked for me.

I am a little curious how the TRD would sound/perform with just the dual resonators and no crossover. But, I have no plans to cut the H pipe out so I'll just have to be curious.....

I’m looking forward to seeing pictures and possibly hearing it a video of the change. This seems like the exact exhaust I want. I think when I’m ready to bite the bullet, I’ll get with Keith and see about him possibly making one of his TRD replacements just like this for me.

 

I posted some videos on the previous page with just the H pipe. I don't think the exterior sound is much different with the resonators added, it's just a lot quieter on the inside.

If you want duals, I think the TRD replacement by Keith is the way to go. It's all packaged together ahead of the tailpipes - x pipe, resonators, mufflers.

My setup is a little different, because I have the factory TRD system. The resonators are in the tailpipes between the rear differential and spare tire. And I added an H pipe crossover ahead of the mufflers versus the X that Keith uses.

 

Posted pictures of the resonators and H pipe. For reference, the top resonator is bolted to the passenger side tailpipe and the bottom resonator to the driver’s side. The driver’s side does pitch down. They are stainless, but Keith offered to replace if I encounter any rusting issues a few years out due to water collection on the driver’s side. Honestly, I’m not too worried about it.

All, this mod H pipe helped me gain back bottom end and eliminate that choppy drone. Best mod made yet. TRD was all about sound and there was no gain performance what so ever. Our engines are less efficient going true duals.

 

Man, I'm scratching my head on the desire to make a beautifully engineered look and sound of the TRD Pro dual exhaust - quieter!
Apologies, I don't mean to insult. And I also completely understand that these things are subjective.

Me? I love the sound of a good V8, which our 5.7s are. I agree with whoever said the TRD exhaust is all about the sound. However, I disagree that it results in a degradation of performance, be it tq or be it hp. Toyota doesn't just slap together parts like this exhaust system, slap a TRD Pro label on it, and call it a day. They are, well...engineered!

 

You make good points - no offense taken.

My truck came with the TRD exhaust - it was a leftover that I got a great deal on. I wasn’t really trying to make it quieter, I wanted to get rid of the chopper-like resonating sound at steady highway speeds. I know it doesn’t bother everyone, but it annoyed me.

As far as performance, the mid to top range with the TRD was great, but I could feel it struggled to lug in 6th gear at lower speeds. Not a major issue, but it was there.

 

Same reason I added a crossover pipe (h-pipe) to my TRD system.

 

Truth of the matter is that H-pipes do increase performance. Mostly low to mid end. Do some research on it if you don't believe it, exhaust scavenging is very real. I have trd exhaust and installed an H-pipe for the performance, and it's a noticeable increase.

My 1794 came with the stock single exhaust, so I had a chance to put a few hundred miles on it before the dealer installed the TRD exhaust (agreed-on as part of the sale). I honestly noticed no change, good or bad, after the install. - - I know you know this, but for others - your truck should never be lugging at low speeds in 6th gear, let alone be in 6th gear at low speeds. The trans should downshift, or if you're shifting it manually, well, I think you know the rest. But seriously, it's always possible (though not likely in a Toyota ) that the trans

Yep, done a ton of research on H-pipes. Had them installed on both my '12 & '18 Mustang GTs. Why? For the sound. I never felt any improvement. Dyno results showed very little improvement in autos and manuals.

For my truck, I hit the tow/haul button and enjoy the kick, along with making it louder. It's towing ability is fine as it is (don't haul more than about 600 lbs). That little button is the biggest improvement in power. It reminds me of the tuners I used on the Mustangs.

 

I used “lugging” as a figure of speech, but thanks for the clarification for everyone else, which will help make my point....

Scenarios where the stock single exhaust and H piped TRD could hold 6th gear would require a downshift with the TRD duals. Not a big deal just anecdotal evidence that the true duals may loose some low end torque.

 

I have the trd exhaust as well with the noticeable helicopter sound around 50-65 mph. Would you recommend an h pipe or the resonators to cure it?

 

The H pipe will get rid of the helicopter sound, but it also changes the tone of the exhaust. It’s smoother and deeper sounding vs the throaty burbly sound of the TRD. You’ll lose the chopper sound in that 50 to 65 mph range, but to my ears there was a little drone left - just not that resonating chop. The H pipe is cheaper than resonators, but will require sectioning in pieces of pipe if you decide to reverse.

The resonators make the interior very quiet. It still sounds like the TRD but just very muted inside - the sound stays outside. The chopper sound is still there if you listen for it, but significantly reduced. The chopper sound didn’t bother me with the resonators. The resonators are more expensive than H pipe, but more easily reversible - just unbolt and clamp block off plate.

I still have the drivers side resonator which I can send you if you decide on that route. But you would need to get the passenger side resonator from Keith.

and we opt for the headers offered on their site..... do we still have the catalytic converters as part of the exhaust set up? I called a local shop about doing the work if get the TRD replacement set up from Keith......they suggested they could not get rid of the cats.......silly epa I guess.

Thanks for the offer. I just had shoulder surgery 2 weeks ago so I won't be doing this modification for a while. Did you only end up using the passenger side resonator leaving the drivers side unused?

 

With a little tweaking to the saddle, the TRD resonators can be used with the standard system - the angle of the resonator part is just different. When I sold the TRD exhaust, I held onto the resonators and another member got the passenger side resonator for a project he was working on.
