What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I didnt realize how pinched the y pipe is. Sequoia is different. Maybe theres enough pulse to scavenge at the y, but think id prefer to run true duals with an x once i figure out who to sell my cats to.


i would like to see an apples to apples between an x pipe and this.

i doubt it would be worth the extra weight.

My 3" cat back sounded better than stock, but the exhaust scavenging is affected so much that the trans thinks it has to downshift on the slightest hills. I definitely regret buying the catback I have for that reason alone. That downshifting correlates more to throttle position and engine output more than o2 sensors. I would imagine a bottleneck at the end of an exhaust plays a more of a role with pressures and scavenging than it does temperature. It's really neat to know that exists though.

 

Truck has been driving great. No CEL from Short Header install a few weeks back. She sounds and runs Smooovvv. I'll be doing some longer drives soon and see how the MPG is doing with the New Headers.

Thats a weird design there. Can't say I've ever seen that.

 

Newer thing from borla. Only for mustangs as of now as a resonator delete. Supposedly 5% better flow than a traditional x pipe

 

I think its supposed to spread the pressure waves out.

 

I can imagine that section can handle more flow than a standard X since it has twice the pipe and no intersection but once you add pipe before and after I bet there is no benefit. Interesting design though.

 

Also 4 vortexes instead of basically 2 with a xpipe. Vortexes don’t help flow

One thing i forgot to mention yesterday, is a 4.7l engine running at 10% throttle is moving air more like a 470cc engine. Its not an exact analogy, but youre in the ball part. Which is how the vvt or vvl does its thing... if it takes 15hp to hold 60 mph, and you can make an engine make 15hp at WFO, you’ll have less pumping losses and be more efficient.

 

Today is oil and plugs day. The closest autozone didnt have iridium, so i got ngk platinum. Autozone guy said stock was copper, anyone know if beefier coils have been made? Pretty sure i did plugs 10 years ago or so, so it might have iridiums in it, just curious.

 

Stock is platinum on the VVTI motors if i remember right MSD sells coils. But no one has tested to see if spark is strong that the oems. Toyota’s COP setup has pretty strong spark as it is

 

Yeah. I’m using Copper NGK Plug ($1.50) with the New Denso Coils ($54). Smooovv.

Copper Plugs don’t last as long but it seems they spark nicely.

Nice work! I need to remove front and back pumpkins for a regear... how difficult as it to remove?

 

Should be as easy as sliding the axle shafts out, pulling the drive shaft, and unbolting the third member. This depends on how grooved out your drums are and how crusty the adjusters are I guess. That would be my biggest worry. Seems like a good time to go sequoia discs no?

 

Thanks. Sequoia discs?... I was just thinking I should ask you all if there’s maintenance/upgrades I should do while I’m at it.

Edit: you mentioned sliding axels out, I’ve read a few times where the rear axel seal? starts leaking if I’m not mistaken. This is what clicked in my brain that led to me realizing there’s work I can do while I’m removing the diff. Am I right about changing axel seals?

No need to pull drums. Disconnect park brake cable, remove 4 nuts, slide axle out a bit to disconnect brake line and cap it with a vacuum cap. Pull axle out with drums complete. Best to drain the diff first of course.

 

Supposedly first gen sequoia rear discs bolt right up. I think it's just taking everything from the axle housing out off the sequoia and bolting it on the tundra. Brake lines and e brake cables I don't know. I haven't heard anybody mention swapping axle shafts so I assume they work too. It's on my list because my rear brakes are in an unknown condition. I think I had the drums off once and I've adjusted them a couple times, but I'd rather go to discs than even put new shoes on drums. The parts from a u-pull yard should only be around $100-200 and if I can find one with decent looking rotors I'd probably just run them. Maybe with new pads or maybe give it a try with the used ones if they look alright. Wouldn't be the first time I've used u-pull brakes on my vehicle.

 

the discs do not bolt up. The axle hub bolt pattern is different. You need the whole axle housing

 

I thought about it, still thinking about it, but somewhere i found backing plates to mount 13wl discs/calipers, and i cant find that anymore... post #13 kinda talked me out of it, but not completely.

 

Per posted link. I think this is what I saw before.

axle tubes. The axles are the same for the Tundra and Sequoia. When you
have removed everything
needed for the conversion you will be left with the differential housing
and the splined ends of the axles exposed.

You will need R and L caliper mounting brackets, R and L calipers, R and L
disc rotors, bearings, brake
pads, custom fabricated brake lines (to reach the calipers in the new
position) and a brake proportioning
valve (available at most performance shops).

If you have four wheels ABS you will need to modify the ABS wiring to reach
the sensors in the new location."

SOS Performance disc swap in the rear with Powerstop parts. F*** the instructions though. Rear discs is my favorite upgrade on my truck by far.

OH the sos conversion? Uses fj calipers now. That’s a different story. But I thought you meant using sequoia backing plates and all. That won’t work

 

Crazy. From the posted link it sounds like the guy used all sequoia stuff. That's also what I'd seen elsewhere. Maybe it's all fake news.
