2nd Gen Rear Bumpers!

Just came on here to try and see if this bumper i saw on IG was on here, low and behold first post i see. @pyrite808 . Hows the bumper holding up?

It’s holding up great, no complaints on my end. I’d say it’s actually better quality than the front bumper I got, both are China made but the Hooke road brand seems to have better welds, powder coat, more solid overall. Haven’t needed to use the recovery points yet so that will be the true test, but I am confident it will get the job done.

Minor mod I did was a swapping out the silver d-rings for some black ones from harbor freight and also added a rubber isolator to get rid of the knocking noise I was hearing when I’d go over speed bumps and the shackles would slide around in their mounts a bit.

 

@pyrite808 I just ordered the Hooke Road front and rear as well, due in this week. Seems pretty straight forward, just cant find any info on connecting/setting up the lights? Do the rear lights splice into your reverse? Or do you need to run secondary wiring to a new switch?

 

Nice post up some pics when you get em on! I didn’t get that front bumper but I think you will like it, the rear is holding up nicely. Some people have advised that the hardware may be sub par so you may wanna get some better hardware before installing, I used what’s in the kit and it’s holding up fine but time will tell. Install is very easy. For the rear backup lights I just spliced them into my reverse lights, you could run a switch but I didn’t really see a need to have one.

 

I will definitely post sone pics once I get them mounted up, and yeah I might go grab some nice Grade 8 hardware once it all shows up. I'll try just splicing into my reverse.
Now just need to figure out what to do on the front light bar

 

The front you have many options, me personally I bought a bussman box and am gonna do my own custom wiring/switches from ch4x4. This will allow me to add many other lights/powered accessories down the road. It was intimidating to start but I finally sat down and attended YouTube university to teach myself electrical, here’s a video I found extremely helpful

back to your rear bumper, one of my license plate lights is dead, I've read that the stock lights are necessarily plug and play and need a bit of cutting/trimming. are there other aftermarket units that would work with that bumper well that I could order? My bumper shipped today so I'm getting antsy, the front definitely needs to be done ASAP but I can wait a bit for the rear if I need anything special

 

I ordered the rear bumper after the pics pyrite posted his build. I have it in my garage but have yet to mount it.

I, too, would like to know what has to be cut out in order to fit the stock license plate lights. I've seen a few pictures of the stock lights on, so it can't be too difficult.

The quality seems to be on par with DV8 (if not a little better), but I did notice that the gussets on the adapter bracket are significantly smaller than on other clone bumpers (because let's be real, they're all copying Fab Fours). The picture below is of the Fab Fours bracket and the red lines show roughly the size of the gusset on the Hook Road bumper:


I'm sure to a welder this would be a non-issue and a quick fix. But as is, it probably wouldn't take a hit as well as a bumper with a larger gusset. Just an observation. I intend on keeping the bumper. Just looking for the time to put it on!

 

Yea it is definitely intimidating if you don’t know electrical. I spent a whole day just watching videos on YouTube and searching various forums. Once you know how it all works it will give you the confidence to tackle all kinds of projects so it’s worth the investment. You could also look into switch pros but I think that is a bit pricey.

For the the license plate lights it was just a simple swap, I don’t remember needing anything special to get them in. You may want to be extra careful when removing it from the stock bumper as the plastic clips that hold it in might be brittle and snap, one of mine did but it still mounted up no problems.

 

I think I might just order factory replacement LED units off Amazon, they are like $14, one thing I've noticed removing my front bumper yesterday was that most of, if not all the plastic clips are super brittle (13yrs old)
I read on opne review that they needed to be trimmed a little bit, but I'll see how it looks once I get it.

 

I was worried my stock license plate lights would be too brittle (12yr old) and one of my bulbs had burned out so I just picked these up and they pop right in, no cutting/trimming however no screws and the bumper isn't tapped for threads, so I think I'll use a small drywall anchor that will expand when I thread it in.

@pyrite808 what did the mounting screw screw into on yours? did you pull it from the stock bumper? I'd like to keep my stock bumper as complete as possible so I can throw it up for sale and recover some of my expenses on the new outfit

 

I just used a lock nut on the other end of a screw to secure it no biggie. Sold my stock bumper for like $100

 

I bought both front and rear DV8 Bumpers for my 2019 SR5/TRD Offroad DC. I installed the rear this weekend with no problems. I'm not an engineer, but this bumper is 100% better/stronger than the OEM/factory.

I'm in the process of installing the front but there was no hardware in the boxes. I procured hardware and will resume assembly tonight and tomorrow evening. I see no other faults with this bumper set and it seems to be a great deal.
(Other than being made in China).

 

Went and grabbed a couple of theese dry wall anchors at the hardware store while I was getting some mounting hardware for the licence plate, tapped them into the hole and used a new stainless wood scew to tighten em up. Worked great.

 

Update. I forgot to add that the rear bumper did not come with the cutout for the trailer hitch wiring assembly.
It's no big deal. I'll make a cardboard template of the old bumper cutout And trace it onto the new bumper and drill / cut it out. It's a simple snap in for the assembly after that.

 

I apologize if this has been asked, but will a rear bumper for a 3rd gun Tundra mount right up on a 2nd gen? Looking at this one for my 2010: https://www.ebay.com/itm/362693316300?fits=Model:Tundra

 

From my understanding, it will mount fine, but the fitment will not be as tight and there will be gaps. I asked the same picture in a Facebook group and got pictures to show the gaps, but can't find the post again now.

Hooke Road makes a similar bumper to what your looking at, that's made for the 2nd gens and is around the same price point.

 

Do y'all know of any good metal fab shops in SoCal? I called SoCal Custom Metal Fab and they wanted $2500 to build this bumper that cost $1300 in Texas

Then I called another place and they charged $3500 for this bumper

I just want a high clearance bumper that I don't have to spend $3000 on or spend $600 in gas to pick up.

Here's what I have now. I've been waiting 5 months for my Ironman 4x4 suspension to come in.

 

Custom fabrication is time consuming and expensive. You are being charged for skills acquired over years and expensive fabrication equipment. There are lots of options for pre-fabricated aftermarket bumpers. These companies have patterns and CNC cutters that replicate designs over and over. That is why their prices are a little more reasonable but then there is shipping!
If I have the option I will always spend a little more and support a local business. The other option of course is to buy equipment and build one yourself.

 

So I did want to mention this but think its a little early but oh well. I spoke with the guys over at Demello Offroad as I have the front bumper for the 2nd gen and its a straight head turner and of course want a rear bumper to go with it. When I talked to them about it they said that it is very similar to the 3rd gen and just have to make a slight adjustment to the angles and its the same exact bumper. They did say they are open to a group buy and would just have to let them know of it. I can get more details on the amount or number of buyers we would need but would like to get an idea of how many people are interested.

I installed the Trail Toys rear bumper. No drilling, uses factory holes. 11/10 recommended

 

Yeah I had to do that. It was super easy, I just had to make sure I was cutting a straight line. Use tape or the paint above your cut like will get all f***ed up. I then used some of this Dupli-color undercoat rubberized paint to seal the metal so it won't rust.

Picture is unrelated to my bumper job, I included it so that you know what the can looks like. I have 1 more this to do, but I'll do it later and will post pictures. It's adding the Better Edge Trim from Trail Toys.

 

Anybody have pics of the
Scorpion SCO-RBTUN07 HD Rear Bumper with LED Cube Lights Toyota Tundra 2007-2013 installed? I have only seen the stock photos. Looking for a bumper with the led lights and maybe step holes but it's hard to find a subtle design. I have a 13 Black RW.

 

My setup. I have moved the lights into the bumper since this pic but I want to replace the bumper all together.

 

This was a bumper I purchased off ebay and modified to my needs. I then had it sandblasted and powder coated as most powder coat jobs are not done correctly and only last a couple of years at most.

 

This is what I came up with for my rear. I didn’t find any high clearance bumpers that I liked.
