Lug nut removal without key

This is a tricky one, trying to remove a set of rays Duranuts but I can’t find my key! I’m sure it will turn up in a day or two when I no longer am itching to mount these bad boys

but let’s just say I don’t find it... what then? I have tried fitting a socket and jamming with a hammer but the lock is seven sides so no parallel sides for it to lock onto and it was super soft and was rounding the edges. I tried chiseling it but the aluminum is just too soft. I had discount tire try with there fancy lug removal kit and same results too soft to grip. Tried chiseling a slot of a screwdriver but... nothing... am I really going to have to drill these out of do you guys know a trick?

Not a lot of room to work with here and really trying not to damage these pricey wheels

 

Hammer a 12 point socket? It looks like you’re already starting to jack up the wheel. Keep looking for the key!

 

The redneck option, assuming you have access to a welder, is you can weld a large nut or bar to it. It will probably mean some scorch marks. There is also a tool that tire shops use, it will trash the lug but will come off. But pretty cheap service generally and probably your best bet.

 

If you had the key code for the lock the manufacturer could sell you a replacement key. I had to do that with a McGard lock a couple of years ago.

He did mention it was “soft aluminum” weld a steel nut to an aluminum lug?
I’d also say he is past the trashing the lug point based on the pictures.

 

This idea may work I’ve never seen one this thin walled but I’d need one a bit bigger. I had to hammer on a 20mm socket and it would probably have to be either a universal or a 12 pointer. Thanks for the suggestion I’ll look into finding one

probably going to try a few tire places before work tomorrow I can’t be the only one this has happened too. I just don’t know if I trust old tire tech joe to be careful with my gramlights.

 

The key code is in the key
I was talking to showstoppers offroad and apparently Ray’s makes 16 different keys and you have to show proof of purchase to get a replacement from mackin industries.

 

You might try the Toyota dealership.
They forgot to give me my key back a few years ago after a tire rotation.
I went back the next day and they had a box full of lug keys.
Found one that fit mine and gave it to me....

I have TRD spine lugs and locks now.
Ordered a second key when I bought them.
One is in the console, one is in the swing case..

 

I lost my key and just ended up using the closest size socket and just hammering it on, worked pretty good - has to be tight. Lugs nuts are useless anyways since you don't have the key so destroying them to get them off shouldn't be an issue.

 

The dealership will have the means of removing it. They deal with that sorta thing every day. Also any tire shop will have a "lug lock remover" it's a tapered socket you hammer on designed for your type of problem.

 

My buddy uses sockets like these at his shop.

Another day of no luck. Tried multiple tire shops and no one would touch them. Bought a couple different lug nut removers from auto part stores and nothing can bite.

That sucks.

Last resort is to drill through the lug nut and drill out the stud. Use progressively bigger bits. First hole needs to be dead center.

Well, on the plus side I guess you know the lugs worked as advertised...still, that sucks!

 

That sucks. I guess if I didn’t care about the rim I’d just burn it off. I think you need a slightly larger socket to hammer on. The scuff marks don’t look like they go deep enough to get a good purchase on what’s left.

 

I reached out to the biggest distributors of these In The US and he let me know there are 16 different keys, if it was only those 5 I would just buy them all

 

I was thinking the same but yeah it does suck

 

But you could measure your lugs and that would narrow it down.

Also, the code is on the lug near the bottom. Get a light and scope around for the number, then buy that key

 

I ordered the one that was closest to what I have... shipping was more than the key itself
