Come on Toyota...a little lazy are we?

Option "LB" is labeled as a "spray on bed liner".

A port-installed Toyota option doesn't cut corners. There are two ways to know if the bed liner was from Toyota
    1. The most obvious one is in your bed If you have the word "TUNDRA" embedded then the bed liner on the back wall was port installed. Dealerships/local installers can't replicate that. seen an example in this picture here.

    image.jpg
    Source https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/845707338/overview/

Furthermore, you can see the bed liner was sprayed all the way to the top of the walls. That's Toyota standards.

    2. Check your Vin number here. You will see under Port or Factory installed equipment section if your bed liner was from Toyota
In the case of this truck above, it was

    Screen Shot 2021-05-04 at 5.08.37 PM.jpg

So in OP's case a Toyota dealership got it done locally.

    Nevermind,well at least partially.

Actually yours is post production so Toyota did not install it, I just dont accept that the factory would do it this way.
Also notice the blue thread lock in the hex head bolts re-installed in the rail holes?

This truck had the rails clearly from birth.

Negative. I’m the OP. I watched it come off the hauler it was already spray in bedlined and it is stamped TUNDRA on the front too.

Don’t mind the extra weather stripping in the front..

You can see easily from the bottom-up and through the holes that it is not sprayed behind the rails. It is also something no one will notice except for me and I don’t particularly care.

All 4 of my corner tie downs are sprayed. Behind my rails is sprayed as well. I don't think I have Tundra stamped at the front.

I am dumbfounded that Toyota has started cutting corners like this. I didn't see this happening in the 2020s.

Hence my point of them being lazy!

It’s sort of like if I pulled off the molding or the badges and it was just primer underneath.

looked the same on my Tacoma and it did not have the spray in bed liner.

I was going to remove and keep the bed rail system before I traded it so I could put them in my Tundra, but when I saw that underneath and left them on the Taco.

Rails or not, this is lazy. My line-x dealer removed my rails prior to spray.

It's not lazy, it's efficient and maximizes positional accuracy by eliminating a variable in the tolerance stack-up.
Installing rails over bedliner increases variation in positional range.
Sure a couple MM's per side may not seem like a big deal, but ultimately can create a fit issue for aftermarket accessories with a set bed width to rails.
Masking ensures whether line-x'ed or not, the rail position is the same truck bed to truck bed.
Since its covered up. it's protected and therefore does not require line-x protection. The dis-assembled appearance is unfortunate.
Sure it's a cost down on spray materials, but OEM's don't design nor cater to customers who complain about dis-assembled conditions. Vehicles are evaluated in full assembled condition only.
Example: Customer complained floor carpet has cutouts when center console was removed.

We buy Toyota as a brand for quality and reliability, sure I want them to be efficient as possible, but not taking corners on options that charge as much if not more than line-x and provide worse quality.

What kind of aftermarket accessories would require this level of precision for fitment and wouldn’t account for a couple MM tolerance in such?

    Also, why would Toyota care?

I agree that the rails will fit better without the liner underneath it, whether that matters all that much is debatable.
I also agree that it would have been better to install that cap using the rail system clamps instead of removing that feature.
You lose the use of the rails for other things and create an eyesore and, thus, this topic.

I disagree that its Toyota being lazy or cutting corners regarding spray around the rails, or over the bed bolts and clamps.
This is not a factory/assembly line feature, its an add on after the truck leaves the factory, not something that leaves San Antonio on the truck. Whether its port installed, dealer sourced, customer sourced or a DIY job, there's going to be some variation in the process and results. Each source may have a slightly different process or standard, but I don't think its a matter of one cheaping out while the other is going the extra mile, its just a different way of lining the bed.

Either way, its not like Toyota is leaving it up to the port or dealerships to build the motors or transmissions or wiring harnesses and all that kind of internal stuff, so I wouldn't equate a spray-in liner with stuff that really matters in the overall reliability of the truck as built by the actual factory.

If I were Toyota I'd do it the same way. Very few people are ever going to touch anything in the bed, might as well guarantee that those fasteners never work themselves loose.

Yeah it's a huge PITA. I had to remove my two tie-downs when installing my bed extender. The best way to expose the bolt holes was to heat up a sturdy nail till red hot and then burn the crap off. Using a torch directly on the bolts was too much, I'd fry the surrounding material as well.

So, I am the OP. I installed this myself with what was supplied. Was a bit disappointed to see the rails had to be removed as I specifically wanted them for the bed. So....I can’t find these special rail clamps that would allow me to retain the rails. I’d gladly buy them if they’re compatible with the rails and my rsi smartcap.

Mostly correct, except that Toyota does not install bed liners. The port is not Toyota, it is a private franchise, or "middleman dealer". The different regional ports are independently owned and they can install options the way they want to. There is no "Toyota standard" for bed liners. One specific port might decide to contract with Line-Ex to do their liners while another might have a guy employed to do it at the distribution facility. Same can happen at the dealer.
In other words, there is not necessarily any difference between a port installed option and a dealer installed option, or if there is a difference, there is no guarantee that one will be better than the other.

There are drop brackets available to re-install the rails a little lower, so you can keep your current cap clamps and keep your rails.

The Bed Bolts are one of the few things that my Line-X dealer did remove (along with the bedrail).
