Hey everyone! Finally bought my first truck ever. 2016 Tundra SR5 with the TRD Off-road package.

Previous owner added the following about 6 months ago:
    • Front King Shocks with Total Chaos Control Arms
    • Rear Airlift 5810 airbags
He told me the front shocks are set at 2.5".

The rear airbags were inflated when I bought it, but it seemed like a rough ride. So I deflated. Can't tell much difference in either look or ride quality to be honest. Do these airbags come with a lift? Sorry, seems like a terribly dumb question. Can't see it on the product page, but it definitely seems higher than stock in the rear.

I bought this vehicle specifically to be able to do some more difficult offroading. I rode with my friend in his Rubicon up to the top of Schnebly Hill in Sedona. Not the OHV route, but the hill above it. I guess it's borderline rock crawling in some places. From that vantage point I determined I need a vehicle where I can get to these remote places. Other than that it's just my daily driver.

I'm already learning a ton here browsing this forum. I plan on putting together a spreadsheet for my wish-list. This is the stuff that I'm already daydreaming about:
    • Suspension - I feel like I need to do something with the rear. It's just not a great ride right now. Would I get much improvement by matching the rear with the King shocks? Other alternatives?
    • Rear Sway Bar - I just finished the whole 13 page thread on this. Seems like an obvious win, but I do see the reasons for why it may not be a great idea with my intended use of off-roading. I've seen at least one person say he got the same sort of handling improvements by adding the yellow sumo springs. Thoughts? It is cheap enough that even if I eventually damaged it off-roading it wouldn't be the end of the world.
    • Audio - Standard stuff here. Want to dynamat everything. Add a new head-unit with wireless apple carplay capability and keep the steering wheel controls. I know I need to replace the factory amp as well. I'm not convinced I need to upgrade the speakers though. I'm not that big of an audiophile.
    • Driver side grab bar
    • Underbody protection and rock sliders - no real questions here. Tons of posts on these. I'll eventually get around to pulling the trigger.
    • Camping solution for the bed - I went with the tundra double cab for the 6.5' bed. Originally I was going to go straight for the camper shell, but now I'm skeptical. You do lose a bit of practicality I'm afraid. Currently leaning towards bed racks and a RTT, but always love browsing the threads of what everyone here has done.
    • Appearance - I too would love to get rid of all this chrome. But it's just such a low priority relative to all the performance and quality of life mods I want to make.
Happy to be here! Really love learning about all the things y'all do to your vehicles. Hoping to put it to good use on mine soon. :D

*edit* one other thing I just thought of... The previous owner was a big dude. Sadly, the front seat got a little squished. Worse, the seatbelt sticks when un-clicking it. I think safety wise the seatbelt is no big deal, because it only gets stuck in. It's never come out. But still, that's not something I like to take chances with. Any advice?

Tundra Rear leaf springs are a weak link on these trucks - ICON -DEAVER ETC - threads are everywhere - then get a good set of rear shocks to match the rear lift setup you choose
I’m saving up for the IRONMAN- complete suspension my self

PLENTY of help around here to spend your MONEY !!

I think he means pay it off before modding it. As fas as your questions, for the rear you can go with leaf kits from several different companies as well as shocks to make the back feel and handle a lot better. A rear sway bar will help with handling on pavement but will limit the amount of wheel travel when offroad. Ever seen a rig with one of its tires up in the air? That's because the sway bar is linking it to the angle of the other wheel. Easiest solution to have the best of both worlds is invest in some quick disconnects. They will allow you to disconnect the sway bar when offroading, then just connect it again when you get to pavement. OEM+ offers some great kits that are literally plug and play with what's in your tundra now. You can choose just sub or sub and speakers. For protection there is a guy on here who makes great skid plates, search Valhalla and they should pull up. Sliders are everywhere so take your pic. I don't have any advice for your camping set up, but for the chrome just keep your eyes peeled. I'm on the same mission and just scored some black door handles to match my truck from another member, next is grille and mirror caps. Good luck man truck looks great already, can't wait to see it when it's done.

    Welcome from GA!
Judging by your user name, I feel compelled to say, Go dawgs! Now that’s out of the way...
If you need help spending money, you’ve already taken the first step by joining here! Again, welcome!

Go check out the DIY threads at your own risk!

Theres also tons of threads on head units and sound system upgrades, and even more on suspension and over landing/off-road gear.

    The short answer to a few of your questions on the rear suspension;
Bags help, but shouldn’t be the main lift/support for the rear. I’d definitely upgrade the rear shocks and check out coachbuilder for bigger shackles. The sway bar makes a noticeable difference on the road. For off road, and since you mentioned possible crawling, I’d definitely say no.

As for the camper or rack, it all depends on use/ needs. There’s plenty of both on here.

    Here’s mine.
    A few of the highlights;
    Icon’s all around,
FS bags (I never go over 15 psi, btw)
    +3 shackles coming.
I run TRD sway bars in front and rear. I off-road for camping and hunting, and while Ive got a few place that I can get stuck, I don’t need the articulation to cause me to remove the rear sway.
    ARE, Z series cap.
As FYI, if you’re getting a cap or rack with gear, look into some bed stiffeners as well.

You MUST upgrade the door speakers. Lots of us on here do a basic 5 channel amp, sub in a box behind the rear bench, and component speaker upgrades for the doors. The difference (which can be had for about $1000) is unbelievable.

When you pull the factory door speakers, you’ll honestly wonder if Toyota wasn’t trying to prank us. A disposable paper plate would do a better job. Reach out to @james@tech12volts

Other account drainage devices to consider:

    Diamondback bed cover $$
Katzkin Leather/heated seats all around $
Hell Yes Dirty Deeds exhaust $$
Pop N Lock auto tailgate lock $

Buy a beater tacoma to off road in, they can truly go places if set up for the good times. You can trailer it to the trails with your Tundra. Then your daily won't lose too much more fuel mileage with serious off road mods.

    • Suspension - Do a thorough suspension check. Tie Rods/rack and pinion, upper and lower control arms, leaf springs... everything. Used is used, and I'm finding out used Tundras get beat on pretty good. Got a lift installed on my double cab for this reason, and it fixed damn near everything that was wrong with the suspension. If you need rear shocks, try some Bilstein or BDS.
    • Rear Sway Bar - Wouldn't know about this. Ask away in the forums.
    • Audio - Honestly, speaker swaps should be enough. You really don't need subwoofers in a truck you're going to off road in, but if you do, I hear low profile single subwoofer is probably your best bet. Replace the door speakers when they wear out. They'll do the job for now, but you're better off spending your money on necessary items before upgrading for comfort.
    • Driver side grab bar - PLEASE let me know what you go with. I want to do this.
    • Underbody protection and rock sliders - A MUST. I need some as well.
    • Camping solution for the bed - Check some overlander builds. There's great ways to utilize the bed if you're going to use it as an overlanding camper to include a roof tent.
    • Appearance - Cheapest things you can do are chrome delete covers, interior LED swap (include bed light, license plate light, and reverse lights), antenna swap, custom rubber matting, window tint, steering wheel cover, shift knob replace, and a tow hitch. If you want to get all the expensive stuff out of the way first, try bumper replacements (steel stealth bumpers are durable, and great for off road), custom grille, headlight/taillight assemblies and bulbs, tow mirrors, lift kit, rock sliders, off road lights, and wheel/tires. Go for an offset. Make it look MEAN.

    Lol, no story.

For me personally, every car, truck, motorcycle I've owned, first priority has always been getting the title early. Just a good feeling. My house is another story though haha.

Photo of the rear leaf springs and air bag. It’s odd, this looks to be branded an Air Lift model 5810, but I can’t find any reference of this product on the vendors website. I’m curious where the lift is coming from on my rear end. I’ve tried to deflate these entirely, but there still seems to be a lift.

Not a great photo of the leaf springs, but I’m looking at it and they seem a little tired. Plus the rust from previous owner putting in his boat. Should I replace the whole pack?

I’ve already determined I’m going to add the CB shackles recommended previously. Also working with accutune on a kings setup for the rear. Plus going to get them to tune my front shocks while they’re at it.

Dobinson's rear leaf packs, best value out there, plus they lift. So no need for $300 shackles. Invest it in the springs.

Updates from a busy week of shopping:

A/V - got in touch with @james@tech12volts. Learned a lot about speakers, head units, and general state of the economy. Great dude. Highly recommend everyone do business with him.

A little nervous because I've never installed any car stereo equipment before, but I'm sure I can figure it out.

    Summary of my order:
    • 1.0 x Phoenix gold hertz package - 1 PG mx 800. 5 2 hertz k170 2 PG mx 10d2 and custom doublecab box sail panels x2 wire kit 4 channel loc and entune harness amp rack speaker brackets front nd rear 2 1. 5 rcas and adaptors
    • 1.0 x 4 rolls of soundshield
    • 1.0 x JVC 10. 1 KW-Z1000W - with all parts for Tundra
    • 1.0 x Kenwood CMOS-740hd camera
Suspension - worked with @AccuTune Offroad on ordering a new set of tuned rear King shocks. I'm also going to get them to service the front shocks and tune them while they're at it. Still haven't decided if I'm going to do the de-install and install on my own yet. It seems easy enough but they've offered a great rate to do it all, and time is scarce!

    Summary of my order:
    • KRS-25001-144A - Tundra 07+ Rear, 2.5 Dia. Remote Reservoir Shock w/ Adjuster
    • AccuTune Revalve for New Shocks
    • Shock Rebuild for Remote Reservoir and Piggyback Shocks - Replace Rod Guide Seals, Reservoir Seals, Clean Shock, Set Oil Volume. Does not include top cap o-ring replacement or DCS assembly rebuild.
    • KRS-F1011 - King Shock Oil (Gallon)
    • KRS-25000-900 - King Seal Kit, 2.5 x 7/8" Shaft, Performance Series, 2.5 Reservoir, Buna
    • AccuTune Revalve during a shock rebuild. Tune: Adventure
Broken Seat Belt Receiver - Ordered from McGeorge. Great doing business with them. I accidentally selected the beige option, but thankfully they cross check with your VIN and reached out immediately to confirm and correct my mistake no hassles. Lesson learned: left/right hand parts are referenced from the perspective of sitting in the car. Because this was left of the center console, I ordered the Left version.

    Summary of my order:
    • 73240-0C121-C0 - Buckle End

Grab Bar Handle - Ordered from Sparks. I saw a lot of other options that were potentially cheaper discussed on here. But as you can tell by this list I do have my work cut out for me. Wanted to keep it simple.

    Summary of my order:
    • PKTUNGRAB - Tundra Grab Handle Kit Interior Color: -B0 - Light Gray
Wireless Charging Tray - Ordered from Sparks. I was going to cheap out here and just use a simple USB thing from Amazon. But this was cheaper than I expected and I was already ordering from Sparks anyway. Plus my current tray isn't in great shape. The SR5 trim badge is missing. I'm not actually sure that this new tray comes with that trim badge though. Seems like a new one is not included, but I wanted to hope for the best.

    Summary of my order:
    • 00016-34506 - Tundra Wireless Charging Tray
Rock Sliders - Working with a local welder to buy some custom made for $500. Some more details in this thread. Will follow up with details/review. If anyone is interested in contacting the guy (San Diego Area) I'm happy to get you in touch.

    Next priorities:
    • Camper shell - I'm considering that I may just bite the bullet on the RCI SmartCap. It seems like the shortest lead time available to me right now. I'm really sold on the modular steel construction and that positive pressure mechanism to keep dust out. But I'm still exploring. I'd like to find something cheap secondhand, but that seems unlikely.
    • Skid Plates - they pop up on my local CL about weekly. I just haven't been able to snag one yet. *fingers crossed*
    • Front Seat foam issues - first up I'm just going to steam it and live with it. When I replace the seat belt buckle I'm going to see if I can get in there with some extra foam from a local hobby shop just to give it back it's shape. I found the post recommending the scheel-man aftermarket seats and fell in love. Sadly I don't see spending ~$2,000 on a single seat anywhere in my future.
