The transmission wants to be around 190. That’s where it stays on 07-18s with the factory cooler. Toyota planned on it being there with having the warmer attached to the transmission. 185-197 is perfectly fine. The cooler is there to dissipate the heat, but it still has to wait for the thermostat to open.

If you think you don’t need the cooler, you may want to think again. Gathering some pre-cooler data, I saw 228 degrees on the pan temp today just running to town and back. I wasn’t towing anything and had a light load (6 bags of mulch). 80 degrees ambient today in SE Ohio. I’m planning to haul a load of bricks to Oklahoma next month. No doubt I will finish up the cooler kit installation before then.

Reading those PID'S seem pretty confusing when you look at the yellow and red zones respectively. Coolant temp. is absolutely normal, but is at about 3/4 into the red zone. Pan and convertor are in the lower red and yellow zone, but this is somehow abnormal? Can someone explain to me how this is a problem? :notsure:

Colors are arbitrarily set by whoever makes the dashboard. They can be easily adjusted.

So you the owner can set the colors, or its set when you download it?

It’s easy to change it in OBD Fusion. I just moved up the limits on coolant temp, since they were set too low.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having the PID'S? I would think that the settings should be based on what Toyota has determined to be the average/optimal readings that are normal.

The PIDs simply allow you to read the output to pins in a calibrated digital format.

The dashboard has to be set up by the user to display that digital output using the options, typically analog/digital, starting/ending scale value, background color, overlay colors, etc available.

Some of the numbers reported here raise questions in my mind about the PID used. Compared to the coolant temp, they look suspect to me. Good idea for dashboards to also show the coolant temperature as a reality check.

Curious what looks “suspect” to you? The fact that they’re hotter than you expected? I learned from another post that A/T Oil Temperature 1 is the pan and A/T Oil Temperature 2 is the torque converter. I simply picked them from the drop down menu. Thought it was pretty hard to mess that up, but maybe I did (?). What am I missing? Thanks

My comments not directed at your data specifically, Michelle. I'm not sure if you've missed anything, but for some, maybe worth a double-check. In fact, not sure where I read it, but the temps I read looked low compared to coolant temp, but run-time may not have been considered. In a cooler installation setup, coolant temperature is going to be a very strong influence. It is not the final arbiter.

On a very cool day, I would expect ATF temps to be below coolant temperature ONLY short-term. Once the engine coolant temp is stabilized on a long drive, I would expect ATF temperatures to be slightly above coolant temperature and variable within a set range according to load. That's just the way Toyota has set up the opening temperature on the transmission thermostat.

Need some quick help. Just did the level check but found a washer in the pan I drained into. The check level plug did slip out of my hand when trying to out it back in. Does the transmission check plug have a crush washer?

If so, is there a correct side up?

It does have a crush washer. I found my crush washer in the bottom of my drain pan after the level check procedure was done. Put it back in. I lost maybe an ounce or two of fluid when I pulled the plug and put it back in. I then added fluid when cold and reperformed the level check. Come to find out, I probably didn’t lose enough to add and check level again. Slip that crush washer on quickly abc thread it and you’ll be like me and only lose an ounce or two.

I just put it back in and it doesn’t leak. It also didn’t leak when it was in the drain pan.

Yes, went ahead an pulled the plug and put it back in. Probably an ounce or two lost but not enough that concerns me.

Just curious if others have found their transmission shifts better after adding the cooler?

Ever since I purchased the truck, when cold, the transmission is slow to shift and generally lagging until the temp gets up (5 mins or so). This morning with similar ambient temps (55 degrees) the shifting was much smoother and consistent right way like when it was warm. Maybe is it purely in my head but curious if anyone else has experienced this.

@a522467 Michelle, you make a very good point about the cooler, but I have a question with utmost respect what in god's green earth kinda bricks are you hauling from SE Ohio to all the way Oklahoma, that can't be found in Oklahoma. That is THE Question

Sounds crazy, but one of my many hobbies is brick collecting. When I’m not working on vehicles or building houses, I like to collect bricks.

I've heard of bicycle collecting, Matchbox toys, stamps, Watches, Jewellery, Gold Coins, Paintings, Silver, Antiques, Asian Art, Sports Memorabilia but I have never heard of a brick collecting hobby

    Please educate me

What's this now? Who collects what?

I also need to hear more. Do you display them? Is there a market and appraisal guide? Is everyone chasing the same ones, like a baseball card?

Not poking, legit never heard of this.

I'd say your rather ambitious, I do like what you've done. I can say that I've never saw a sidewalk like that before.
    Nice job!

Thanks, @a522467 That's very interesting. I've been to India and have seen brick making for miles and this is why I love this forum it has a little bit of every aspect of life. :)
